Trump Admin Defends Life and Family at the UN — Again
While Christian leaders denounce Trump on character grounds or advocate for political neutrality leading into the election, the Trump administration continues to blaze the trail with a fearless pro-life and pro-family agenda at the United Nations.
Late last week, Trump appointees from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of State gathered with representatives from other nations to launch the Geneva Consensus Declaration.
The launch of this important charter was originally scheduled to coincide with the UN 2020 World Health Assembly, but due to COVID-19 restrictions, the ceremonial signing took place as a virtual meeting hosted out of Washington, D.C.
The full title of the document is the Geneva Consensus Declaration on Promoting Women’s Health and Strengthening the Family, and it was cosponsored by representatives from Brazil, Egypt, Hungary, Indonesia, Uganda and the United States. In total, 32 nations signed the historic document.
The fourfold purpose of the declaration is to promote better health for women; to preserve human life; to strengthen the family as the foundational unit of society; and to protect the national sovereignty of each nation in global politics.
The declaration’s drafters have long recognised the threat to life posed by new generations of pro-abortion advocates at the UN. One of the drafters was Alex Azar, the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, who earlier this year voiced his concerns:
I am sure you are all familiar with the constant drumbeat in the halls of the United Nations and the WHO to normalise the terms ‘sexual and reproductive health’ and ‘reproductive rights’. In this context it is increasingly becoming clear that some UN agencies and countries want this to mean an unfettered access to abortion, and we cannot let this threat to go on answered.
In fact, the United Nations was originally pro-life and pro-family in outlook. The Geneva Consensus Declaration quite deliberately quotes documents previously presented to and ratified at the UN that express the high value of the family, women, and the inherent right to life of the unborn.
As well as stressing the importance of healthcare access for women, the document affirms that “there is no international right to abortion, nor any international obligation on the part of States to finance or facilitate abortion”. Moreover, it states that “each nation has the sovereign right to implement programs and activities consistent with their laws and policies.”
Alex Azar, a Christian, last week called the signing of the Geneva Consensus Declaration “a high point of my tenure as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services”.
Mike Pompeo, another committed Christian and Trump appointee, is the U.S. Secretary of State whose department was a major driver of the document. Like Trump, Pompeo has affirmed that “We in America believe that every child — born and unborn — is a sacred gift from God.” The State Department, pledged Pompeo, is committed to ensuring that American taxpayer dollars are not used to lobby for abortion internationally.
Rightly has President Trump been dubbed “the most pro-life president in history”. While many past American presidents were also pro-life, what sets Trump apart is his pro-life spine in an era when abortion is brazenly and dishonestly promoted as a “reproductive right” and a form of “healthcare”. To resist this merciless agenda — both nationally and globally — takes a courage that few heads of state today possess.
Christians do well to notice that the very traits for which Trump is despised — his bullishness and swagger — are also those which he has marshalled in defence of the unborn. Trump’s bold conservative and Christian appointments are bearing fruit in the U.S. and beyond, and the godless can’t stand it.
Donald Trump knows that he is hated by many. Four years of relentless opposition from political, entertainment and media elites has given him a thick skin that he continues to put to good use for those who can’t speak up for themselves.
It doesn’t require an affirmation of Trump’s personality flaws to acknowledge that he is absolutely right in his stance on the inherent worth and dignity of the unborn.
