Catholic bishops in the United States have condemned the passing of the Democrats‘ new attempt to slide taxpayer-funded abortion-on-demand into law.

House Democrats succeeded in moving their latest manifestation of abortion legislation through to the next round, after the House of Representatives approved bill H.R. 8296 last week.

A press release from the Catholic Bishops (USCCB) issued on Monday pleaded with legislators to seek alternatives, stating,

“We implore those who see abortion as a legitimate ‘solution’ to the needs of women to abandon this path of death and despair.”

Dereliction of Duty

In the USCCB joint statement, chairman Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore and Cardinal Tim Dolan of New York spoke of raising up women instead of enabling a ‘grave evil and a failure to love and serve women by promoting abortion.’

“Offering free or low-cost abortions, instead of increasing the resources women need to care for themselves and their children, is not ‘choice’ but coercion and callous abandonment,” Lori and Dolan asserted.

Disguised as a “Women’s Health Protection Act”, H.R. 8296 is the latest in a list of six abortion bills demanding both the protection and expansion of the practice.

Each bill was sponsored by Democrat Judy Chu. The first, H.R.3471, was put forward in 2013.

The passing of H.R. 8296 is the second partially successful pro-abortion bill brought to the American Congress by the Californian Representative.

Chu’s 2021 attempt, H.R. 3755, was passed by the House of Representatives in 2021, only to be defeated by the Senate in March this year, 46-48.

No Safeguards

At the time, Ashley Foster of Concerned Women for America (CWA) described the 2021 bill as “extreme,” adding that H.R. 3755 was better termed the “Abortion on Demand Act.”

On H.R. 3755’s defeat, Catholic Review said the legislation “would have eliminated pro-life laws at every level of government — including parental notification for minor girls, informed consent, and health or safety protections specific to abortion facilities.”

Chu’s Women’s Health Protection Act bills are widely considered to be a way for abortion activists to bring in mandates for abortion, propping up the industrial abortion industry by codifying Roe v. Wade on a national level.

Commenting back in March on Chu’s legislative defeat, the USCCB explained,

“H.R. 3755 also would have compelled all Americans to support abortions here and abroad with their tax dollars. (It) would have also likely forced health care providers and professionals to perform, assist in, and/or refer for abortion against their deeply held beliefs, as well as forced employers and insurers to cover or pay for abortion.”

Twisted Terms

H.R. 8296 is Chu’s latest attempt, timed to ride concerns kicked up by the political fallout of the US Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v Wade, a decision which ended a 49-year prescription for abortion and its proven slippery slope.

Cheering on Chu’s new murderous mandate, America’s largest Labor union, the National Education Association, backed her baby-hating legislation.

Claiming to speak for all of its 3 million members, the NEA issued a letter to Congress urging representatives to “prevent restrictions on abortion” and alleged that “women were losing their rights.”

Designed to alarm, the NEA inferred the dishonest woke sloganeering, “abortion is healthcare”, affirming along the way that allowing the violent disruption of pregnancy was necessary for ‘protecting reproductive rights.’

Chu’s legislation and support for it, is another example of the woke Left’s cultural Marxist misuse of language.

“Reproductive justice” is a euphemism to conceal the grotesque thirst for the violent termination of new life in the womb.

The abuse of language is historically linked to human rights abuses. Nazi Germany’s “mercy killing” T4 euthanasia program was carried out by the Havel State Welfare Institute. Its victims were viewed as lebensunwertes leben (life unworthy of life), “burdensome” and “useless”.

Tthe department which oversaw the ‘killing in the gas chambers was called the General Welfare Foundation for Institutional Care.’

The NEA’s “emergency! emergency!” proclamations give significant weight to the counter-punch from Catholic Bishops, who declared in the USCCB press release cited earlier:

“Simply repeating the mantra that abortion is healthcare doesn’t make it so. Deliberately ending the lives of defenceless and voiceless human beings is the antithesis of healthcare.”
