Are We Being Controlled?
Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.
~ George Orwell, Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949)
If we are being controlled, who or what is controlling us? If we are being controlled, would we know it? If we are not being controlled, are others being controlled, and how can we recognise this?
Mass Formation Psychosis
Under the title “Media Bias – Part 3: Sociology“, I wrote in the Daily Declaration about the work of Professor Mattias Desmet, Ghent University, Belgium, his work on the theory of Mass Formation Psychosis. I wrote:
So, what is mass formation psychosis? In my analysis, Western nations in particular, lulled into a life of increasing luxury and ease but bedevilled by increasing loneliness and anxiety with no obvious cause, were primmed and ready to receive the existential threat of an invisible enemy, the virus from Wuhan.
I think everyone would agree that the covid era has left an indelible impact on society. I suspect that all of us still have questions as to what really happened and why society responded the way it did.
For me, I believe that governments, particularly in the western world, intentionally used nudge theory to introduce and influence attitudes and behaviours they wanted from their people. Were their populations hypnotised and subsequently influenced against their will?
Matthias Desmet believes they were. He has studied this phenomenon is great depth, and he has the necessary training and skills to inform his position. But what about the rest of us? For me, I tend to believe his proposition based on the evidence he presents. However, I can’t say I know this happened, I simply say I believe it happened.
The Indoctrinated Brain
The Indoctrinated Brain: How to Successfully Fend Off the Global Attack on Your Mental Freedom by Dr Michael Nehls, was published on 20 March 2024.
Tucker Carlson’s interview with Michael Nehls was published on 2nd April 2024 and informs much of the remainder of this piece. First off, from Nehls’ own website, some biographical notes:
For his groundbreaking findings on the development, prevention and therapy of Alzheimer’s disease, PD. Dr. med. Michael Nehls was awarded the Hanse-Award for Molecular Psychiatry 2015 by the Clinic and Polyclinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy of the University Medical Center Rostock.
In the same year, the discovery of a gene regulator essential for the development of the adaptive immune system, made during his post-doctoral work as a molecular geneticist, was honored as a “pillar of immunological research” by the renowned US professional association for immunology.
Just because I have no expertise in molecular genetics does not mean I can’t seek to grapple with Nehls’ ideas. Rather, I argue that it’s important for all of us to consider his perspective on account of the gravity of his deductions.
Nehls asks us to consider the sovereignty of our mind. Do we have sovereignty, or have we ceded sovereignty to another? He asks us to consider the epidemic of Alzheimer’s disease in recent times, and he blows the lid off the idea that it is purely a disease of old age. He says it is not, but because it takes decades to manifest, it has been assumed to correlate with age.
He demonstrates that Alzheimer’s disease is the result of neuroinflammation in the brain, in the hippocampus specifically. The hippocampus is located deep in the brain, hidden within the medial part of the temporal lobe. Nehls says that neuroinflammation can be caused by excessive fear, bacteria or infections. This inflammation prevents the production of new brain cells, which shuts down our mental immune system, with the side effect of attacking our memory centre in our hippocampus.
Nehls shows that an Alzheimer’s sufferer loses their memory and their psychological resilience, and crucially, they tend to be prone to bouts of depression. We might not have an Alzheimer’s diagnosis, but what if we are experiencing some of the early indicators? He goes further and makes an astonishing claim that the neuroinflammation shuts down our ability to think.
As a society, are we less curious than previous generations? As an individual, am I less curious than when I was a lad? How is my ability to think? Am I more easily led than I was? Now as a married man, am I more concerned to conform with the crowd than when I was single?
Spike Proteins
Nehls really gets going now! He reports a 2007/8 study that demonstrates that the spike protein in SARS-CoV-1 was responsible for shutting down nerve cells in the hippocampus, leading to an increased incidence of depression and, in the long term, to a rise in cases of Alzheimer’s disease. At the time, the spike protein was widely seen to be dangerous despite the variant in SARS-CoV-1 not being able to enter the brain cells directly.
Since then, the genome has been changed by genetic engineering, so that in the SARS-CoV-2 variant, the spike protein is now able to enter the brain cells and is much more dangerous to our mental and physical health. As a result, those who caught Covid-19 in recent years may have suffered some neuroinflammation in their hippocampus.
Nehls believes that SARS-CoV-1 and 2 were manmade bioweapons unleashed on the world’s population, not for medical or monetary gain but for the purposes of undermining our ability to think, and ultimately for the purposes of control.
Fear Can Overwrite Our Pre-existing Memories
Under conditions of fear, new narratives can erase our pre-existing memories. Under a state of fear, we accept much more than we would normally, while our natural response to fear is to seek the protection of a group of like-minded individuals, rather than being able to enjoy our own self-confidence and individuality. Not surprisingly, depression rates have seen a big rise in recent years. Some current statistics:
- 1 in 5 Australians, aged 16–85 (22%, or 4.3 million) experienced a mental disorder
(Australian Institute of Health and Welfare) - Ukraine 6.3%, 2.8 million
- USA 5.9%, 17.5 million
- Australia 5.9%, 1.3 million
- USSR 5.5%, 7.8 million
- UK 4.5%, 2.7 million
- China 4.2%, 54.8 million
(World Population Review – Depression Rates 2024)
Nehls postulates that even if the engineering of SARS-CoV-2 was not out of evil intent, he is convinced that the development of the mRNA injections was most certainly designed to conquer our brains. Namely, the lipid nanoparticles were developed to carry the spike protein into the brain cells and shut down replication.
How the Shots Were Administered
Traditionally, when a vaccine was administered, the clinician had to draw a small sample into the hypodermic needle before making the injection. This was to ensure that the point of the needle had not punctured a blood vessel. The vaccines were designed to stay in the muscle or fat tissue and not be transmitted around the body by the blood system.
However, when the mRNA injections for Covid-19 were rolled out, there was no such protocol required. So, inevitably the hyperaemic did impact a blood vessel quite often. And, in the case of young fit athletes, whose blood vessels are large, the likelihood of them getting a shot in the blood was high. Hence, according to Nehls, the high incidence of myocarditis and death in young, fit athletes.
Think Borders
Up to and during World War II, German Fascism had a geographical border. You were either under the Fascist regime, or you were outside, safe beyond its borders.
Today, in Nehls’ scenario, we have no geographical borders; we are no longer seeking to contain an enemy inside a physical border on a map. The enemy is now everywhere.
Geographical borders that we used to think about in the context of sovereignty, invasions and wars have now become paper thin. Think of the tide of humanity entering the USA from Mexico. Think of the Islamists who have entered Europe and Scandinavia.
Then consider Tony Abbot’s stop the boats and the Israeli Defence Force’s (IDF) response to the 7th October 2023 invasion by Hamas. In these contexts, physical borders are very real.
Now, think of the border in our brain. The border is no longer geographical; rather, it is historical. We are no longer tracing a line on a map that divides sovereign territories, we are trying to look back on the reality that was, but we find it increasingly hard to remember, as we are so focused on the present.
It can be argued that our religious beliefs are based on memory, our acknowledgement of prior facts, and the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, who died for our sins. If our memory is being erased, what about our faith?
If our brains are under attack, can we fight back?
Yes, we can! Nehls claims that a healthy 80-year-old could have the same rate of nerve cell production as an 18-year-old. He claims there is no natural decline with age. He debunks the myth that Alzheimer’s disease and senility are an inevitable scourge of old age.
Physical activity and natural micronutrients are what we need for normal hormone production, which will counter neuroinflammation and stimulate new neuron production. Specifically, Nehls believes that vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids are vital.
Interestingly, in 2020 doctors were stopped from ordering routine tests for vitamin D levels, citing the idea that this was too closely aligned with Nazi ideology.
Further, Nehls also cites the health benefits of a very low dose of lithium:
Lithium is most well-known for its mood-stabilizing effects in the treatment of bipolar disorder… low-dose lithium (≤0.5 mM) may be beneficial for cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, metabolic, and cognitive function, as well as inflammatory and antioxidant processes of the aging body.
There is also some evidence of low-dose lithium… benefiting osteoporosis, sarcopenia, obesity and type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and the chronic low-grade inflammatory state known as inflammaging. 1
The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that lithium is not essential for humans, emphasising its potential dangers. But Nehls disagrees; it is a great help in reversing brain fog and can also stop the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.
Are We Being Controlled?
Nehls’ work challenges my worldview. He is suggesting that there is a war against the sovereignty of our minds. Which I would argue is a challenge to the sovereignty of God, as He created us in His image (Genesis 1:27; John 1:3).
Ignoring the possibility, if it’s true, plays into the controllers’ hands. Exercising our critical thinking skills can be a personal litmus test: am I still curious? Am I losing my ability to think? How living is my faith?
Let us never surrender our personal responsibility, for ourselves, our loved ones, our community, or our nation.

What an incredible article. It certainly makes you think!
Thank you Dr Jim Twelves for the article and for highlighting the work of Dr Michael Nehls.
May we stand strong in our beliefs and remind ourselves daily what our God has done for us. Nehemiah 9:17 reminds us what can happen when we fail to remember the miracles God performed in the past of the Israelites. The same would apply to us if we fail to remember what God has done in our own past.
Keep up the good work.
Richard Jardine
Richard, thank you for this. This story has exercised my mind to the core! It has made me reflect deeply on how superficial my attention can be if I don’t catch myself. I think you exhortation to keep the Lord’s blessings before us at all times is so important. For me the story of the Israelites is one of follow Him, backslide, follow Him, backslide. It seems there is no place for just coasting along in neutral, we have to be full throttle for the Lord at all times!
Yes thank you Dr Twelves for bringing this to our attention. I have had a growing suspicion of some of these points, but had no idea of the link to alzheimers, fear and depression. Following Jesus is our best and only hope.
Kathy, take the ‘fear’ point. If I am in a fear state, I am simply in flight or fight, far from rationale in my thinking. It seems to ring true. If we are in fear (the opposite of faith) we can have so many narratives suggested to us and we will so easily take some on board.
Very compelling article, thank you Jim.
I am very thankful that Holy Spirit helps us renew our minds, bringing transformation if we yield to his life changing ways….
keeping our minds and spirits “on our toes”.
Hello Jim
Thank you for your article. ‘Neuroinflammation’ and its effect on the brain is something I have not thought about, but I will give it some more study. The idea by Nehls that states or ‘big pharma’ are deliberately
taking sovereignty over people’s minds is a horrifying thought.
Have you done any studies on how depression and other mental disorders might shut down people’s ability to think? Certainly in the last few years, there has been an increase in the prevalence of diagnosed depression among all ages and particularly among females. The COVID pandemic and the way it was handled, social discord and international turmoil might all contribute to a sense of anxiety and an opting out by people of personal responsibility.
I appreciate the comment by Ian Moncrieff that we can be thankful that the Holy Spirit ‘renews our minds, bringing transformation if we yield to his life-changing ways’.
Stephen, thank you for your contribution. No I have not done any specific study of depression but, like many these days, I find myself in the sphere of more and more people with ‘depression’. It makes logical sense to me that such an illness shuts down ‘creative critical thinking’. I would argue that my ability to think, and think critically I hope, brings a genuine sense of ‘joy’ to my my journey through life. I have been reflecting on this piece for a few days now and the overriding conclusion I have reached is that ‘perfect love casts out all fear’ (1 John 4:18). Yes there are ever increasing numbers of things to fear (Luke 21:26) so this makes me all the more excited to be living in these days, as these challenges seemed extremely remote from me in my teens.
But what about those who are, as it were frogs being slowly boiled? They don’t know they are being controlled, and poached!
A Post Script, I think you might find this illuminating from Dr Michael Nehls https://michaelnehls.substack.com/cp/143709654
