Intention

Confidence in God’s Word equips believers to stand firm in an age of counterfeit gospels.

“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. Their teaching will spread like gangrene.” — 2 Timothy 2:15–17

Reflection

On a long haul flight several years ago, I found myself sitting next to a woman named Anita, and our conversation eventually turned to faith. She shared a sobering story — how her family had been drawn into a cult during her teenage years. Although her parents eventually returned to their old church, the experience of entering into a cult and leaving it again had taken away her confidence that any one religious group had the answer. All she had left was a vague sense that religious people are nice and have good intentions.

It was heartbreaking to hear — and sadly, she’s not alone. Throughout history, people have been led astray by movements that sound Christian but twist the truth. Even in Paul’s time, he had to deal with false teachers like Hymenaeus and Philetus who were distorting foundational truths of the faith, including the resurrection of Jesus (2 Timothy 2:17-18).

The danger with all of these movements is that none of them come with the label of cult attached. No one knocks on your door and says, “Hi, we’re from a cult — would you like to join?” Like counterfeit money, cults and false teachers gain a following by trying to appear as much as possible like the real thing. They use familiar Christian language — words like “God,” “grace,” “Jesus,” and “salvation” — but they give them different meanings.

The ideas they promote often sound biblical, but the core message leads people away from truth and toward destruction. Paul says these teachings “spread like gangrene” (v17) — they’re not just wrong; they’re dangerous.

Today, the rise of woke Christianity is one such example. It co-opts the language of the gospel — justice, compassion, love — but redefines these words according to secular ideology. It replaces the good news of salvation through Christ with a gospel of social liberation, offering activism in place of holiness, and cultural conformity in place of obedience to God’s Word.

In our postmodern world, there’s a popular idea that all interpretations of Scripture are equally valid — that it’s all just a matter of perspective. But the Bible itself tells a different story. Some interpretations are actually just wrong. In fact, some are intentionally crafted to deceive. That’s why Paul urges Timothy — and us — to “correctly handle the word of truth” (v15).

Thankfully, we don’t all need to become theologians or pastors to do this well. But we do need to take ownership of our spiritual understanding. Too many Christians rely entirely on others to interpret Scripture for them. That’s risky. Because when we stop thinking for ourselves, we become easy targets for deception.

God calls each of us to read His Word — not just books about it. He invites us to study it in community — where we can sharpen each other and be held accountable. And as we grow in understanding, we should ask: Is this drawing me into deeper love for God and others? Is it leading me toward a more holy, obedient life?

Scripture is not meant to confuse or intimidate. God gave it to us so that we might know Him, follow Him, and avoid the traps laid by those who distort the truth.

The Bible is your primary safeguard against error. Don’t hand over all of your thinking to others. Read it. Know it. Live it. In doing so, you’ll be equipped to recognise false teaching — and help others do the same.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for giving me Your Word as the source of truth and life. Help me to correctly understand and apply it, not just for my own sake, but so I can help guard others from deception. Give me discernment to recognise what is false, and the courage to live by what is true. Amen.
