From Spirit to Flesh: Recognising Our Divine Genesis
Recently I had a conversation with a neighbour who shared a touching story. Her six-year-old daughter boldly told her classmates, “God made me.” But in response, another classmate disagreed, noting that children come from their parents.
This simple exchange highlights a profound truth: that we are multi-dimensional, we are all wonderfully made.
There are magnificent dimensions to our identity.
Recovering Our Divine Genesis
Yes, we come from the union of a man and a woman. But ultimately, our conception is the miraculous work of the Father of creation — a Spirit-breathed moment in time, a flash of divine light, a miracle.
For many in our society, tracing back their family history can be painful or even impossible without professional counselling and guidance. While ancestry databases have made it easier to trace our heritage, I wonder whether what people discover reflects their true search or deeper longing.
Somewhere along the way, the Church has lost sight of our marvellous, divine origin as spiritual beings created by God. I am reminded of the Apostle Paul’s words in Acts 17:25–29, urging the reader to consider the reality of our origin:
“He himself gives life and breath to everything, and he satisfies every need. From one man, he created all the nations throughout the earth. He decided beforehand when they should rise and fall, and he determined their boundaries.
“His purpose was for the nations to seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him — though he is not far from any one of us. For in him we live and move and exist. As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ And since this is true, we shouldn’t think of God as an idol designed by craftsmen from gold or silver or stone.”
We are far more spiritual beings than we realise. Humanity was first created by God’s very breath (Hebrew: ‘ruach’), as Genesis 2:7 records. Life itself is a divine gift.
Discovering our Divine Identity
In Acts 17:25–29 above, Paul emphasises to the secular Athenians gathered that their existence is deeply connected to their origin in Father God. We were all created in him, and as the Aramaic translation suggests, so that humanity might “investigate him through his creation”.
It is worth encouraging one another to renew our minds in the truth, allowing God’s Word to shape our understanding of both our identity and our past.
Let’s look at other verses that reveal the work of the Spirit of God:
Psalm 104:30 – “You send forth your Spirit, and they are created.”
Job 33:4 – “The Spirit of God has made me.”
Psalm 139:5–6 – “From the beginning to the end, you have formed me and set your hand upon me. The knowledge and wonder are stronger than I and I could not master them.” (Peshitta Holy Bible Translated)
In personal investigation of this, any current anxieties about worthiness and un-wantedness would begin to fade in seeing the intentional work of the Spirit to give each of us life. The wounds and pains of the past would gradually diminish when we grapple with and grasp the depth of the Everlasting Father’s (Isaiah 9:6) love — abiding, perpetual, and unwavering.
By sharing this simple but profound truth about life and purpose, we can offer hope and healing to anyone who is seeking their true genesis. Never forgetting that the love of God may seem foolish to one, but to another it is the very power of God.
House of Refuge
The House of Refuge is a pioneering ministry in Australia, urging and empowering church communities to speak openly about the beautiful beginnings of life and the miracle of conception.
We also encourage response and support to neighbours facing unplanned or crisis pregnancies.
Let us not be slow to speak about the topic of life, for it is foundational to our identity!

Australia still has a blasphemy law architecture that goes by a new name — namely, our vilification and anti-discrimination framework. These laws have striking parallels to Australia’s old blasphemy laws, with the exception that they serve a new god and are more readily enforced than the old ones.

Such a wonderful ministry.
It’s a tough one though so I pray you get lots of support. I remember back in the 80s when many of us were members and supporters of SPUC.
Sadly we suffered criticism in the church by providing safe places for single mothers. Interestingly, while we were advocating the sanctity of life, we were criticised by some as promoting and even rewarding sexual sin.
When it comes to unplanned or crisis pregnancies, the sanctity of life is paramount.
Thankyou Col — it is wonderful. I’m saddened to hear about the criticism, especially when you were providing a safe place for single mothers. We are so blessed to have a growing number of volunteers across Australia (though we need many, many more) who are taking compassionate action on a value they hold so dear: the value of human life!
