King Charles Named Protector of ‘Multi-Faith Nation’ in Palace Report, ‘Defender of the Faith’ Title Dropped

1 July 2026

3.3 MINS

In a recent annual report from Buckingham Palace, the title “Defender of the Faith” has been replaced with a multi-faith alternative in describing King Charles III’s duties.

Buckingham Palace has revised the role description of King Charles III, stating he “protects the space for Faith within the multi-faith nation” in place of last year’s “Defender of the Faith” wording.

The change appears in the Sovereign Grant report 2025–26, an annual review of public funding for the Royal Household published on Thursday.

Last year’s report described the King’s “Head of Nation” duties as “Head of the Church of England and Defender of the Faith”. This year’s states: “His Majesty is Supreme Governor of the Church of England and protects the space for Faith within the multi-faith nation.”

The report also describes the King as a “catalyst for charitable action” and credits him with “fostering a sense of pride, continuity and stability, whilst strengthening the UK’s social fabric and cohesion, particularly at key moments in national life.” It adds that “His Majesty also has a special role in bringing communities and faiths together, engaging with them across the regions and nations of the UK.”

The Buckingham Palace report is a financial and administrative document that does not alter the King’s statutory titles or the Church of England’s constitutional status.

The wording change follows remarks King Charles made to UK faith leaders at Buckingham Palace in September 2022. “I have always thought of Britain as a ‘community of communities,’” he said, adding:

That has led me to understand that the Sovereign has an additional duty – less formally recognised but to be no less diligently discharged. It is the duty to protect the diversity of our country, including by protecting the space for Faith itself and its practise through the religions, cultures, traditions and beliefs to which our hearts and minds direct us as individuals.

In a separate address in 2021, he described interfaith work as “a major part of my life’s work,” saying he had spent years “trying to build bridges between faith communities and to deepen mutual understanding”.

The Title Set Aside

The title “Defender of the Faith” dates back to 1521, when Pope Leo X granted the title to Henry VIII in recognition of a book defending Catholic doctrine against reformers such as Martin Luther. The original papal bull survives in the British Library. Pope Paul III revoked the title after Henry’s break with Rome and the establishment of the Church of England.

Parliament restored the title by statute in 1544, conferring it on Henry VIII “and his heirs and successors, kings of this realm”. Every English and British monarch has used it since, and the abbreviation “F.D.” — for Fidei Defensor, Latin for “Defender of the Faith” — continues to appear on UK coinage and official documents.

Before his coronation, there was public debate over whether King Charles would adopt “Defender of Faith” in the plural, departing from the singular wording used by his predecessors. He retained the traditional singular form for the coronation service and oath, in which the monarch swears to maintain the Protestant religion and the rights and privileges of the Church of England.

The late Queen Elizabeth II’s description in Sovereign Grant reports during her reign was shorter, identifying her only as “Supreme Governor of the Church of England”.

Charles’ Decades of Public Comment on Islam

King Charles has addressed Islamic theology, history and law in public speeches spanning more than three decades, both as Prince of Wales and as monarch.

In a 1993 speech at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, of which he has been patron since 1993, he said:

If there is much misunderstanding in the West about the nature of Islam, there is also much ignorance about the debt our own culture and civilisation owe to the Islamic world. It is a failure which stems, I think, from the straitjacket of history which we have inherited.

He added that Islam had “preserved a metaphysical and unified view of ourselves and the world around us,” which he said the West had lost following the scientific revolution. He told the same audience:

We must not be tempted to believe that extremism is in some way the hallmark and essence of the Muslim. Extremism is no more the monopoly of Islam than it is the monopoly of other religions, including Christianity.

At the Markfield Institute for Higher Education in 2003, he stated, “Anyone who doubts the contribution of Islam and Muslims to the European Renaissance should, as an exercise, try to do some simple arithmetic using Roman numerals. Thank goodness for Arabic numerals and the concept of zero introduced into European thought by Muslim mathematicians!”

Addressing Al-Azhar University in Cairo in 2006, the then-Prince said, “We need to remember that we in the West are in debt to the scholars of Islam, for it was thanks to them that during the Dark Ages in Europe the treasures of classical learning were kept alive.”

The King has also studied Arabic in order to read the Quran, a fact Cambridge Central Mosque’s imam noted in a sermon following the King’s accession in September 2022. His garden at Highgrove, his Gloucestershire residence, includes plants referenced in the Quran and design elements drawn from Islamic tradition.

I recall the great cost of getting the Bible into the English language and out to the common people in England and, indeed to all within the British Empire/Commonwealth. I recall those who were burnt at the stake and executed by the authorities in England and elsewhere for their love for Jesus Christ. King Charles has long departed from the message of the Cross, the uniqueness of Jesus Christ- Yeshua HaMaschiach, the Jewish Messiah for the whole world, from the Word of God. I too have studied Islam. Its message is the opposite of the Bible. I stand with my Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. He Is truth, He IS the Way and He IS the Life. No-one can come to the Father except through Him.
As an addendum: I understand that the concept of zero, originally was in the Hindu scriptures. If we look back, it was our mighty Creator who introduced mathematics and the wonders of Creation and creativity- not a political and weaponised ideology. It all goes back to our Creator- our Saviour.

Kurt, thank you so much for this research. it is a most balanced review, but does not hide the fact that the King is now, officially, not defending Christianity against all others. It confirms that the UK (and the Commonwealth) is not long Christian. but Mulifaith.

    Great work Kurt.
Simple: Charles MUST abdicate as he has broken his oath before God.
    We have been betrayed.

I well recall the high cost of those saints who gave their lives to get the translated Bible into the English language, and those who chose to follow Jesus in England and all its territories. Anyone who has dipped into Foxes Book of Martyrs or has read of Tyndale, Wycliffe and those on the continent who willing suffered humiliations and executions for our Saviour’s honour and His Word knows this history. Britain has a trail of blood to honour our Lord Jesus. It is my belief that, sadly, our monarch King Charles 111 has long left the faith of our Fathers to follow other “isms and schisms”. Interfaith has nothing to do with the uniqueness of our Lord Jesus Christ, Yeshia HaMaschiach- the Way, the Truth and the Life. The Qur’an, the Hadiths, and the whole of Islam is the opposite of the Bible- both in its message and the life lived out in Christ. Muslims have no hope of salvation in their ideology, loving death in jihad rather than life. (yes, I too have studied Islam). Our Saviour came to give life, that all who believe Him, may have life, true forgiveness of sins and eternal life in the Kingdom to come. Extremism in Christianity is to lay down our lives for others. We have plenty of examples of this around the world in the self sacrifice of folk who have given the Gospel of Jesus Christ, education, hospitals, health and welfare to needy countries and lands in compassion ministries. We also know the suffering of the saints, and other minorities, in Muslim majority countries.

As an addendum: the concept of zero is in the ancient Hindu scripture. Indeed, if we go back far enough, we know that all knowledge, mathematics and all creativity emanates from our Creator, the Saviour Himself. Let us honour Him. And pray for those who do not yet know Him.

And we have the Pope going off the deep end with islam…

Pope Leo XIV presented Iran’s ambassador to the Vatican, Ayatollah Hossein Mokhtari, with the Vatican’s highest diplomatic distinction — the “Medal of Pius” — reportedly in recognition of Iran’s “extraordinary contributions to peace and interfaith cooperation between Christians and Muslims.”

He has never uttered a single word about the grooming and rape of many thousands of British girls. Those girls had no protection and no defence from the King and his ministers ( religious and secular)

James, excellent point. If he had taken a stand, perhaps his servants, if they were, would have taken a stand too.

I agree that Charles abdicate as he has breached the Christian Coronation Oath and is no longer the “Defender of the { Christian , ie Anglican /Protestant} Faith ” as established by Act of Parliament in 1544. He may as well “go the whole hog”, become a Mullah. If any modern -day Christian church leaders had any self respect or respect for the Christian Faith, they would emulate the Medieval Popes who used excommunication , ie bar him from entering any Christian church or taking part in any religious services, including receiving Holy Communion, unless , like Henry 11 , he publically confessed his sin on his knees , wore sackcloth and recanted—the Christian Church used to know how to deal with Heretics, because that is what he is !!!
As for all the Hog Wash about how we are indebted to Islam for the “O” and how it “SAVED” our ancient Greco-Roman writings, etc , it is all , rubbish , PROPAGANDA perpetrated in last 60 or so years by a series of professors , like Esposito whose Foundation studies were funded by about 20 million by a Muslim Ruler.
The “O” was invented in India about 5 centuries AD by Brahmagupta, not a Muslim, before Mohammed was born ! It is inscribed on a temple wall. The Muslims DID destroy the Library of Alexandra. To this day Muslim ideology is to destroy all evidence of previous cultures and religions wherever they conquer , eg the recent destruction of the ancient , giant statues of Buddha which existed in Afghanistan because they predated Mohammed and Islam !
The Eastern Roman Empire with its capital , Constantinople, remained the repository of the remaining Western, ie Christian learning which had not been destroyed by Islam when it conquered the Christian Roman Middle East and North Africa. The ancient classical Greco-Roman, eg scientific works of Pythagoras, etc were kept in Constantinople until the Islamic Conquest in 1453 , when the Christian survivors escaped, taking the learning mostly to Venice and to the Eastern Christian churches and monasteries . In Florence it ignited the Renaissance.
What is now Turkey was once Christian , part of the Eastern Roman Empire inhabited by mostly Greeks. Much of so-called Muslim scientific inventions were done pre -Arab Conquest of Persia , by Persians who had their own religions eg Zoroastarianism, etc , not illiterate Arabs, who had no learning , lived in tents with goats in the Arabian desert.
I agree , Islam is not a ” religion ” as it is primarily a system of Coercive Governance, an Ideology . Its teachings on slavery, sex with children, the 72 virgins reward for Muslims who kill Christians, etc cannot be said to be “spiritual” or uplifting . It is MURDER ! Its Teachings are to force Sharia Law on the whole World by Conquest, by force , guile or parliamentary means , and then to wipe out parliament , destroy Democracy and any Western Literature or music and prohibit Freedom of Thought, Speech and Religion which is why it is an Ally of Communism until it gains World Power. Its aim is to wipe out Christianity, Buddhism , Hinduism, etc, only Submission to governance by Islam is permitted .
King Charles has abrogated his Right to Rule as a Christian monarch. It is only a matter of time before the UK is ruled by Sharia Law. Time we leave the UN and the Commonwealth because the UK is a disgrace. BravoTommy Robinson and the Defence League to save Christian UK, The Family, etc!

Thank you Karl for exposing the true meaning of the ‘faith’ that King Charles is defending (i.e. a word referring to a series of world religions that he sees as equal -though he seems to favour Islam above them). It is a tragedy that King Charles did not follow the faith of his mother the Queen or of the British martyrs who centred their belief in the cross of Jesus Christ and the Bible alone. Eleven of twelve disciples were killed for their faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the risen Saviour. As said above, ones like Wylicff who translated the Bible in England was burnt at the stake over 15 centuries later as he dared to give the whole population the chance to read the word of God, and he paid the price as well. These were the true defenders of the true and living faith. Paul the apostle also ‘determined to know nothing except Jesus and Him crucified’ and no other gospel.

Over 12 years ago, David Pawson, a UK Baptist pastor and apologist explained how the UK tried to appease the Muslims (a fatal mistake) during Queen Elizabeth’s reign. He tried to warn The UK of the future battle that would take place….he foresaw the spiritual vacuum arising in the UK as materialism and relativism took over, and as immorality and lawlessness grew and truth and absolute values began to fade. Instead of the Bible being a guide, human pride arose and faith in science also. Pluralism, multiculturalism and religious equality arose, along with seemingly good values of ‘tact and tolerance.’
Then syncretism arose where men could choose common ground for mankind and all religions get together (Christianity, Judaism, and Islam blend together). David warned that this made a seemingly good new ‘faith’ community.
As Karl has shown, this led Prince Charles of England to say he wanted to be made known as ‘Defender of faith’ for the betterment of the society- all faiths. (The Pope gave this title to Henry VIII due to Henry writing a book against Protestantism against the Catholic faith. David Pawson saw the church ‘haemorrhaging’ and noted that under 5% attended church weekly in 2014.
David noted that while this spiritual vacuum was taking place, The Shah of Iran called himself the ‘King of kings and Lord of Lords’ which preceded his fall from leadership and later growth of Islam…plus there were other possible factors involved with the fall of the Shah but whatever the case radical Islam arose with a stranglehold over Iran, with the intent to spread their ‘faith’ throughout the world creating Caliphates. The aim was to covert the world but with that agenda and to use Sharia Law to bring women into submission. The greater target was and still is to kill the Jews first and then the infidels (Christians and all non-Muslims who did not conform)
It is a tragedy that the present king has been blinded to this but so have many Governments in the West. We need to keep praying many more nations wake up in time and that Christians will intercede and pray through for Governments and societies to be allowed to teach Biblical principles and the true Judeo-Christian faith.

If King Charles and the Govt continue to allow Islam to have pre-eminence in the UK or to count it as harmless, it will leave no freedom for the Christian faith. Islam is based on the Koran while the Christian faith is based only on the Bible and the sacrifice of Jesus Christ the son of God on the cross for our sin and His resurrection and second coming.
There are countless examples of countries being overtaken or infiltrated by radical Islam and forcing moderate Muslims to join them. There are also non aggressive means of infiltrating. The West has not understood that its easier for Islam to infiltrate through mass immigration, and through vying for positions in local councils and Parliament or key positions in Society (eg Mayor of New York).
Another way is for new migrants or citizens to push for ‘Sharia Law’ to be introduced in each country they aim to infiltrate or take over.
One problem for the UK and the West is that our Western mind, as a rule, has no real understanding of these forms of legislation and so the danger of it is not seen. The Sharia law in Iran (a Shiite nation) must be obeyed by all people within the country which means Christians have few if any freedoms and it will mean death and prison if they are perceived to be disobeying. In Australia this would mean our Constitution based on Judeo Christin values would be ignored and replaced by new Islamic laws (The UK already has some electorates under Sharia law)
Overall, Sharia Law “dictates the nation’s constitution, penal codes, and personal status laws, directly enforced by an unelected clergy and the judiciary to oversee both government functions and daily public life…Sharia law is the moral, religious, and legal code of Islam. Derived from the Quran (the holy book of Islam) and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, it acts as a guide for daily life. It covers everything from personal rituals—like prayer and charity—to family life, business, and criminal justice…The Islamic Sharia law is the basis of family, marriage and women’s rights in Iran. As an example, the law permitted men to have four permanent and as many temporary wives as they wanted. Custody of children was in the hands of the father and after his death, in the hands of the male relatives on the father’s side.”
    (Ref Wikipedia and Google).
In theory, Sharia law classifies Christians as ‘dhimmis’ (“protected people”) and “People of the Book,” affording them specific rights alongside restrictions, in exchange for their political submission and the payment of a special tax but in reality, many of the Christians in Iran have been hunted down, jailed, raped and those who were injured in protests who were beaten were later killed after they sought medical help in hospitals.
None of the above Islamic laws, values or actions add up to following Christ and the Bible or ‘the narrow way.’ The Christian faith is not to be forced on others and there are scriptures clearly saying Christians are to pray for and love their enemies as Jesus did on the cross (the Christin values are the opposite of radical Islam). For this reason, we can’t agree with King Charles’ conclusion that all faiths are the same and to be defended.

If indeed Charles did or didn’t swear his oath on the bible, but instead the Quran when he hid behind the curtain at his coronation, or was it several books of knowledge? He has now shown to have aspired to increase his coverage of authority for the political advantage, rather than Christian truth. Maybe he has thought that retaining a wider and larger seed of power, a greater aspiration, and is hence, consistent with situational monarchs of his line who may have thought they alone knew the secret knowledge of the grand architect. It is worth asking, however, which seed has he planted in his garden and what will now be the ramification of the fruit it bears, considering that the heads of those religious observance do not share power or crown with any mercy, mind or manners, are altogether neither alike?
