God Will Never Fail You

Intention

Even in times of betrayal, hardship and loss, we can rest in the strength and love of God, who will never fail us.

Scripture

“But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was delivered from the lion’s mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” — 2 Timothy 4:17-18

Reflection

In the early 1700s, a group of Moravian refugees fled religious persecution and found shelter with Count Zinzendorf, who welcomed them onto his land in what is now the border of Germany and Poland. Out of this small, persecuted community came one of the most remarkable prayer and mission movements in history.

Believing deeply in the power of prayer, they began a 24-hour prayer watch, taking turns so that prayer never ceased. It was a chain of intercession that continued unbroken for a hundred years. Out of that fire of prayer, God stirred a passion for mission, and soon, hundreds of Moravians had left their homes to share the gospel across the world.

Many knew they would never return, so they packed their belongings in coffins. Two young men, Johann Dober and David Nitschmann, even sold themselves into slavery to reach African slaves in the West Indies. As their ship pulled away, they called to those on shore, “May the Lamb that was slain receive the reward of His suffering!”

These missionaries didn’t go because life beyond their shores would be comfortable or safe. They went because they were convinced of the truth that God was with them and would never fail them.

Paul knew the same thing. In his final letter, he named Demas, who deserted him because he loved the things of this life. He named Alexander, who opposed his ministry. And then he added, “Everyone abandoned me” (2 Timothy 4:16). Imagine the weight of those words.

This wasn’t self-pity — it was reality. In his greatest trial, Paul was left without human support. And yet, he was able to declare with confidence, “The Lord stood at my side and gave me strength” (v17). People failed him, but God never did.

If we’re honest, we all know the ache of being let down, opposed, betrayed or abandoned in one way or another. Each of us has carried wounds longer than we should, perhaps even allowing bitterness to take root. But the truth that sustained Paul can sustain us — God’s presence is constant. His strength is enough. His promises do not falter.

Holding on to that truth transforms us. It gives us courage to keep going when life or ministry is hard. It enables us to forgive, even when the hurt runs deep — just as Paul prayed, “May it not be counted against them.” And it lifts our eyes beyond the pain of the present moment to the hope of God’s eternal kingdom.

This is what drove the Moravians. They knew their mission might cost them their lives, but their hope wasn’t anchored in this world. Like Paul, they could say, “The Lord will… bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever!” (v18).

Perhaps today you feel discouraged or alone. Maybe someone has failed you at a time when you needed them most. You are not alone. The same Lord who stood with Paul, the same Lord who sustained the Moravians, stands with you today. He will never, ever fail you.

Prayer

Lord, thank You that You never leave me or forsake me. When others walk away, You remain by my side. Give me the courage to keep serving You with boldness, even when the cost is high. Help me forgive those who have failed me, and keep my eyes fixed on the hope of eternity. May my life, like Paul’s and the Moravians’, bring glory to the Lamb who was slain. Amen.

Yes Thank you Kurt. Lord give us a revival like the Moravians had. This precious clarity of devotion and mission seems to be born in persecution. I heard once of a Chinese underground church praying that persecution would come to Australia so “they would take their faith seriously”….. Living in a comfy bubble does not help us.
