Watch: This Little Girl Gets Racial Harmony Better Than Many Adults
An adorable one-minute video has been making the rounds online over recent days. In it, a father and his preschool-aged daughter talk about racism and why it’s so important that we judge each other by character, not skin colour.
“Daddy teaches you you can be anything in this world that you want to be, don’t Daddy teach you that?” the father asks his daughter. “Yeah, and it doesn’t matter if you’re black or white or any colour,” she replies.
“This is how children think right here,” the father tells viewers. “Children do not see skin colour, man. They love everybody.” The animated exchange between the girl and her dad has already had millions of views on Twitter.
The idea of ‘colourblindness’, made famous by Martin Luther King Jr’s speech I Have a Dream in 1963, has recently fallen on hard times across the West.
“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character,” MLK shouted from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during that speech.
In the decades since, judging people by their character — rather than unalterable traits like their skin colour — has been a foundation stone of Western liberal democracies.
But in recent years, a wildly popular idea called critical race theory or CRT (part of the broader ‘wokeness’ movement) has been seeking to make race central to how we view each other, in the misguided hope of righting past wrongs.
CRT assumes that “racism is the ordinary state of affairs in society, present in all interactions, institutions, and phenomena, and effectively permanent in society,” according to academic James Lindsay. Worse still, CRT holds that white people are to blame for this status quo. In other words, CRT is itself a racist and divisive theory!
Christopher Rufo, who is shining a light on these issues in America, explains that CRT promotes race essentialism, collective guilt, and neo-segregation. CRT is strongly promoted by the Biden administration and the Black Lives Matter movement — and it is also gaining traction in schools, colleges and corporations around the United States.
But not so for this father and his daughter. “Not with my children,” he tells viewers. “That’s not going to happen. My baby’s going to know that, no matter what she wants to be in life, all she has to do is work hard… We need to stop CRT [critical race theory], period, point blank,” he says.
