Church of Nigeria Severs Ties with Church of England Following Appointment of Pro-LGBT Archbishop

With Sarah Mullally now Archbishop of Canterbury, the Church of Nigeria has declared spiritual independence from Canterbury, prioritising fidelity to God’s Word over revisionist innovations.

The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), the world’s largest Anglican province, has formally declared spiritual independence from the Church of England.

The decision follows the appointment of Bishop Sarah Mullally as Archbishop of Canterbury, the first woman to hold the office and an outspoken supporter of same-sex marriage.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Archbishop Henry Ndukuba, Primate of the Church of Nigeria, called the elevation of Mullally — who has also voiced support for open borders, Black Lives Matter, climate change, and abortion — “the final confirmation of moral decay within the leadership of the Church of England.”

The declaration asserts that the Nigerian church will no longer recognise Canterbury’s authority in doctrinal or spiritual matters, marking a decisive break with Western Anglican structures.

“This election is a double jeopardy,” Archbishop Ndukuba added, “disregarding the conviction of the majority of Anglicans and promoting same-sex marriage.”

He urged members to remain steadfast in upholding Scripture, calling on Christians worldwide to resist “ungodly teachings that compromise the faith” (Jude 1:3).

A Fractured Communion

Bishop Sarah Mullally, formerly Bishop of London, assumed the role of Archbishop of Canterbury last week, succeeding Most Rev Justin Welby.

While her appointment has been praised in the United Kingdom as a milestone for “gender equality” and “inclusivity”, it has prompted strong opposition in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

The Church of Nigeria counts over 25 million members across 10,000 parishes, making it the largest Anglican province.

For decades, the church has resisted revisionist innovations, maintaining that marriage is a sacred union between one man and one woman.

Its declaration affirms allegiance to the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON) and the Global South Fellowship of Anglican Churches (GSFA), upholding God’s Word rather than yielding to traditional structures or locations.

Dr Emmanuel Ibekwe, church historian at the University of Ibadan, described Nigeria’s move as “a long overdue assertion of theological independence” that reflects a shift in spiritual leadership.

“We are witnessing the decolonisation of Anglicanism. Spiritual authority once centralised in England is moving to the Global South,” he added.

The Road to African Independence

The rift between Western and African Anglicans has grown since 2003, when the Episcopal Church in the United States consecrated Gene Robinson, an openly gay man, as bishop. That decision sparked global backlash, particularly from African provinces who recognised it as a rejection of biblical teaching.

In 2008, GAFCON was established in Jerusalem as a platform for orthodox Anglicans, providing an alternative to Lambeth Conference governance. Since then, repeated boycotts of Lambeth gatherings and widening theological disputes have further chipped away at Anglican cohesion worldwide.

The Church of Nigeria’s declaration has garnered widespread support across the continent.

The Anglican Church of Uganda, which severed ties with Canterbury in 2023 over blessings for same-sex unions, praised Nigeria’s conviction. Archbishop Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu affirmed that Nigeria “stands for biblical truth and holiness.”

Similarly, Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit of Kenya emphasised that his province cannot remain in fellowship with those who “reject biblical teaching on marriage and holiness.”

Rwanda, Tanzania, and Sudan are expected to issue statements supporting Nigeria, indicating a possible continental realignment of Anglicanism around Scripture.

‘This is Not a Time for Fear but Faith’

Critics of Mullally’s appointment observe that her leadership exemplifies a manifest departure from biblical authority.

Right Reverend Mark Powell, writing for The Daily Declaration, highlighted Bishop Mullally’s minimal theological formation, limited parish experience, and prior career as England’s Chief Nursing Officer, raising concerns about her readiness to guide the Communion.

Her advocacy for same-sex marriage, equivocal support for abortion, and focus on social justice issues over the salvation of souls have drawn scrutiny from conservative theologians.

Nigeria’s declaration signals a potential reordering of the Anglican Communion globally. With more than 60 per cent of Anglicans now residing in Africa, the shift undermines England’s historic primacy and signals an Anglican realignment along doctrinal rather than geographic lines.

Plans are reportedly underway among GAFCON and GSFA provinces to establish a Council of Primates, coordinating doctrine, mission, and global representation independent of Canterbury.

For the Church of Nigeria, the declaration marks a defining moment in its 175-year history.

Archbishop Ndukuba called on congregants to remain united and prayerful, saying, “This is not a time for fear but for faith. We are standing for truth, and truth will stand forever.”

The Nigerian Synod is expected to ratify the decision formally later this year.

Fantastic! A church willing to stand by its principles and an Archbishop willing to stand on the line of faith and tell his parishioners to stand on God’s laws not mans!

“We must obey God rather than men.” Acts 5:20 – Peter’s words to the High Priests and Sanhedrin when they were trying to shut him down for standing for Christ.
Well done to the African Anglican church. May God bless them, strengthen them and continue to build His church in Africa (through all God fearing denominations).
So many in the west have been taken captive to a cause, ideology or agenda rather than to stand for Christ. Let us not be swayed to join the wrong group and to look carefully what cause we are following.

I am not sure how the Anglican church in Australia will respond. I hope they will be bold and distance themselves from wanting to appeal to everyone (if that is possible) and offend no-one and thereby end up offending the Lord. Fortunately the Bishop in our diocese is God fearing and sticks to scripture above all else.

I pray that Sarah Mullally would see the seriousness of her stance and repent or resign. May God open her eyes and grant her repentance.

As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Joshua 24:15

Exciting times in the church !!
At last the lies are coming out into the open … and so is the truth !!
    No more compromise !!
    Much more conviction !!
    Praying :
O Holy Spirit !! graciously do whatever is needed to convict the compromisers of their sin and bring them to a realisation of biblical truth, unto repentance and forgiveness.
May our Lord Jesus Christ be exalted as the truth – which sets sinners free – is declared more and more openly !!

I wouldn’t be at all surprised that they legally ,if not “spiritually “divorced from England decades ago anyway just as Australia did .
It’s all nonsense marketing for division as war propaganda basically .Nazis don’t align with Africans Jews Jehovah’s and allegedly gays ,even though there were ,imo a lot of gays in the upper echelons of the party room .Really it’s all propa ganders
    everything
    nothing’s what it seems .
The whole world shall be deceived and the deceivers themselves shall be deceived.
Eg ,let’s see that church tell the truth about God saying that the only form of sexual activity that isn’t an abomination is copulation solely with the intent of procreation . Everything else is an abomination in the eyes of the Lord
All the hypocrites like to point their fingers at the minorities but God’s no hypocrite . .”the one thing God hates above ALL sins and abominations is the hypocrite “

25 million members across 10.000 parishes, just in Nigeria! That is more than all the baptised members of the Church of England which is 23 million. (Wikipedia) The UK only get 580,000 on the average attending on a Sunday. (Wikipedia). I bet a lot of those Nigerians attend more regularly.
It is good to see the decolonisation of Anglicanism. They lost all spiritual authority when they departed from the word of God.
I feel sorry for the evangelical members of the Anglican church in the UK that they have this woman as their head. It is all wrong.

Nigeria was of course included in the British empire at its peak ,as was 80% of Africa .They’re basically a British colony still British law currency banking education and church .England doesn’t care if they’re kept back in the olden days ,they probably think it’s best to keep them that way and set up their primates to run things the way they feel comfortable for a while longer yet .I doubt that they feel that Nigerians are ready for advanced moralities and would continue to go to church and donate cash readily to a female priest.

Thank you for covering this situation, Kurt. It’s a tragic day for the UK Christians and a triumphant day for Nigeria. I thank God for the Nigerian Archbishop and his stand for truth only, no compromise and only bowing to the Lord Jesus Christ- not to man – just as Daniel stood courageously before God, so long ago.
May God bring an outcry against the UK position and may he reward the Nigerian archbishop and congregations. The Nigerian Christians already have so many being massacred for their faith- they know right and wrong and they know the cost of discipleship.
