Walking in the Way of Blessing: Day 30

2 June 2025

3 MINS

Note: Saturday, 7 June is GO Day, when the Church can come together on the National Day of Prayer from 10 am to 4 pm in many gatherings around the nation and on Zoom. The overarching focus is Christ’s pre-eminence, beautifully described in Colossians 1:15. For more information, visit the Australia Prays website. Find your local National Day of Prayer here.

Intention

To walk in the Way of Blessing by speaking good words over people.

Scripture

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue.”

– Proverbs 18:21

“Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.”

– Romans 12:14

Reflection

Two of my closest friends base much of their lives around blessing and speaking good words.

Kym Farnik is an Australian distributor of a small booklet on blessing called The Awesome Power of Blessing by Richard Brunton. Kym gives many copies away and also sells a lot, but more importantly, he blesses those he meets.

Mike Hey discovered the power of spoken blessings many years ago. He now speaks life, releasing God’s goodness, into every daily interaction. Mike also disciples others into the ‘Way of Blessing’.

He writes:

“From the very beginning, God blessed. In the opening verses of Genesis, we hear the voice of the Creator speaking light, life, and love into being. Then we read: ‘God blessed them…’ (Genesis 1:28). Before there was striving, there was blessing. Before there was mission, there was communion. Blessing is not an afterthought – it is the first word spoken over creation, over covenant, and over community.

“Throughout Scripture, blessing flows not as a formula, but as a way of life. Isaac blessed Jacob. Jacob blessed his sons. Moses blessed the tribes. David blessed the assembly. Solomon blessed the nations gathered at the temple. The prophets cried out with blessing and promised more to come.

“And then, one day, blessing walked among us.

“Jesus… blessed children, the poor, the persecuted, the peacemakers. He blessed bread and fish. He blessed the hands of the humble. He lived as a blessing and gave Himself as the ultimate blessing – poured out at the cross, risen in glory.

“And now, through His Spirit, that blessing continues.”

A few days ago, I was finishing up at a client’s home. I gave her my usual maintenance kit, which includes a Gospel of John. I pointed out that this is a biography of the greatest man alive and is very much worth reading.

She was grateful and shared that she is a Christian but doesn’t say anything – she’s afraid of saying the wrong thing and driving people away from God.

I was able to offer her a pathway that might be less confronting. I suggested she prayer walk her local street and intentionally bless each family as she passed their home. She could pause to see if the Holy Spirit gave some insight or impression.

I shared a few testimonies of my own and others who have experienced incredible outcomes from this simple act of obedience.

I hope this encourages her – and you – to walk in the Way of Blessing and to anticipate eternal consequences.

Prayer

Jesus, may we walk in Your Way of Blessing. Disciple us to bless those we meet in person, families in the homes we walk past, and our own families, with all the goodness You desire for them.

May we always be ready to give a good reason for our faith, with grace and humility (1 Peter 3:15).

Amen.
