Our Main Purpose in This Life: Day 36
Intention
To help us keep the main thing the main thing.
Scripture
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
– John 3:16
Reflection
Today is Pentecost Sunday. On this day, we celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the Church. It is a day worthy of greater celebration in the Christian calendar.
But for you and me, today is also a very special day for other reasons.
Sunday, June 8, 2025, is also the final day of 57 nights of nightly prayer. Each day, a fresh new daily devotion encourages us to share Jesus with all and sundry. This is the last devotion.
During this time, we prayed for the election, followed by GO Month.
The Revival Reformation Webinar, held this coming Wednesday on Zoom, will cap off 60 days of nightly prayer. Don’t miss it!
This is the longest period of continuous prayer you, the Canberra Declaration, have ever completed. This included the National Day of Repentance on Easter Monday in April, plus yesterday’s National Day of Prayer.
You have done well to stay the journey. A massive congratulations!
This period of prayer started with 21 days of prayer and fasting for the federal election.
The day before the 3 May federal election, a friend asked me what I sensed about the outcome. As I wrote previously, I told him:
“I am praying for a miracle. I am believing for a miracle. I am expecting a miracle.
“I don’t know what the miracle is. It could be persecution. It could be the favour of God without persecution.
“I don’t know the outcome of this Saturday’s election. Suffice it to say, God is on the throne, and I pray His kingdom come and His will be done in Jesus’ name. Amen!”
The outcome of the election was disappointing from several points of view. Sadly, we lost some wonderful Christian members of Parliament with a definitive lurch of power to those who have an open disdain for people of faith.
Some of these same members of parliament who are now in power at a federal level rejoiced at the closing down and repossessing of the pro-life Catholic Calvary Hospital in Canberra.
This does not bode well for the future. Using the words of Jesus in Luke 23:31, “For if these things are done when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”
Having said all this, I still stand by my words in the past devotion: “Suffice it to say, God is on the throne, and I pray His kingdom come and His will be done in Jesus’ name. Amen!”
It is important for us to make a stand against sin as we are able to. Hebrews 12:3–4 puts it well:
“Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.”
The good news is that God is on the throne, and He has heard our prayers, and He is answering our prayers. Our prime calling is to live our lives for Christ and share the good news of Jesus to see His kingdom come.
Just this morning I knelt in the carpark outside our office and prayed for healing in a man’s feet and legs. He is a wayward Catholic who I am praying is going to come to Jesus.
Our primary job, as believers, is “to serve God’s purposes in our own generation”, as Paul says in Acts 13:36. Our main purpose in this life is to share the good news of Jesus with all those who will receive it and pray for unbelievers to be converted.
If they steal our property and put us in jail for doing so, all we can do is praise the Lord like Paul and Silas did in the prison in Philippi (Acts 16:25).
Soli Deo Gloria!

Prayer
Father, we thank You for GO Month and all those who have heard the good news, have been prayed for, or have been blessed by our acts of service in Jesus’ name.
We give You our lives afresh today, on this day of Pentecost, and the last day of devotions marking 57 days of continuous prayer.
We look forward to the Revival Reformation Webinar this coming Wednesday night, which marks a historic 60 days of continuous nightly prayer.
Father, pour out Your Spirit again and bring Your lost children home. Help us partner with You to go with the gospel, not just in GO Month, but all year long in Jesus’ name. Amen!
