COVID19 Call to Prayer – April 10: Good Friday
On this Good Friday we remember the death of Christ on the Cross. Psalm 22 provides an astonishing insight into how Jesus felt on that Cross. Dietrich Bonhoeffer describes the Psalms as the prayer book of Jesus. He quotes from Psalm 22 twice on the Cross – at the beginning where He cries out ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” and at the end when he says, “It is finished.” It is clear He either said or had the whole psalm in His mind. The reason that ‘Black Friday’ is ‘Good Friday’ is because Christ was forsaken so that we would not be forsaken… and that He finished the work. As we pray today, let us pray on the basis of the finished work of the Forsaken One.Petition: Please join with us in praying for:
- The Netherlands –The number of confirmed cases is 21,903, with 2,403 deaths of those with Covid-19. The Netherlands does not have as strict a lockdown as its neighbours and is accused of trying to develop herd immunity. They say they are treating their citizens like adults (like Sweden).
- Tasmania – now has 106 cases (up from 71 a week ago), with 3 deaths and 48 recovered. Australia has a whole has gone up to 6,152 (up 100). There have been 53 deaths.
- The police as they are tasked with enforcing the new laws. May they be granted wisdom and compassion as they seek to enforce the law fairly and with justice. May it not be seen as an opportunity to bully or exploit.
- Church leaders who feel the pain and challenge of not being able to be with their congregations this Easter weekend.
- Those who face the horror of loved ones dying and not being able to be with them.
A Prayer of Repentance:
Lord our God, we are appalled and astonished that it is our sin
that nailed Your precious Son to the cursed Cross.
We are the ones who have forsaken You,
and yet You let Your Son be forsaken for us.
We are truly sorry for our sin,
and pray that this day we would remember what a cost it took to free us.
Amen.
A Prayer of Thanksgiving:
Lord – what a Friend we have in Jesus… all our sins and griefs to bear.
What a privilege to carry, everything to You in prayer.
We bless You that the Cross opens up the gateway to the throne of grace and mercy.
Enable us to walk through that door every day.
