Day 26: Open the Eyes of Our Hearts
Intention
To ask God to open the eyes of our hearts, that we may know him more deeply and live in the hope and power of Christ.
Scripture
“I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, would give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him.
“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened so that you may know what is the hope of his calling, what is the wealth of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power towards us who believe, according to the mighty working of his strength.
“He exercised this power in Christ by raising him from the dead and seating him at his right hand in the heavens — far above every ruler and authority, power and dominion…”
– Ephesians 1:17–21
Reflection
Earlier in Ephesians 1:3–14, Paul praises God for having blessed the saints at Ephesus in Christ.
In this portion, he proceeds from praise to intercession, praying that “the Spirit of wisdom and revelation” (Ephesians 1:17) may increase their knowledge of God and enlighten the eyes of their hearts.
He prays that they may know three things.
First, the hope of God’s calling (Ephesians 1:18). The apostle emphasises the importance of having hope — their eternal future with Christ. This hope does not remove the pain of our present circumstances, but it helps us see them in the light of the eternal glory to come (2 Corinthians 4:17).
Second, the “wealth of his glorious inheritance in the saints” (Ephesians 1:18). Paul wants his readers to know what true wealth is. God’s glorious inheritance is worth far more than any treasure or gold that an earthly king possesses.
Third, “the immeasurable greatness of his power towards us who believe” (Ephesians 1:19). God demonstrated this power by raising Jesus from the dead and seating him “above every ruler and authority, power and dominion” (Ephesians 1:20–21). No power is greater than our risen Lord.
Paul declares that this power that raised Christ has also “raised us up with him and seated us with him” (Ephesians 2:6).
Later, he assures them that God “is able to do above and beyond all that we ask or think according to the power that works in us” (Ephesians 3:20) — far beyond their thoughts, wildest dreams, and prayers. Experiencing this power comes through exercising faith in God and his Word (Romans 10:17).
In the light of his amazing grace, and with gratefulness to God, who, “because of his great love that he had for us, made us alive with Christ even though we were dead in trespasses” (Ephesians 2:4–5), let us pray together.

Prayer
Dear heavenly Father, open the eyes of our hearts so that we may grasp the hope of your calling, the riches of your glorious inheritance in the saints, and the greatness of your power towards us who believe.
Help us to be a people of earnest and steadfast prayer. We ask you to send out labourers into your harvest, including us.
Help us to walk humbly, without conceit or prejudice, relying on your precious and very great promises.
Fan into flame the desire to boldly share the gospel. Help us proclaim Christ, warning and teaching everyone with wisdom, so “that we may present everyone mature in Christ”. As we labour for this, strengthen us with the energy that you powerfully work within us (Colossians 1:28–29).
In Jesus’ name, amen.
