Day 16: A Culture of Love

16 October 2020

3.8 MINS

Intention
The church must unite and mobilise to create a culture of love and life that will end the abortion and orphan crisis.

Scripture

“This is how we know what love is; Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with action and in truth.”
1 John 3:16,18

Reflection
I would like to introduce Australia to Love Adelaide’s inspiration — the ministries of Cities for Life and Love Life Charlotte from North Carolina, USA.

I was blessed to attend the Heartbeat International Conference Chicago 2018. The keynote speakers at this conference were identical twin brothers, David and Jason Benham. They are ex-professional baseball players and now business entrepreneurs. Within minutes, they had captured my attention; they were genuine, honest and real. They live their convictions without shame — including their bold stand for the unborn.

Fast forward to 2019, and our son was sent to — surprise — Charlotte, North Carolina on a baseball scholarship. On our visit there, I went out to the largest abortion clinic in Charlotte with these ministries and witnessed the love of Jesus being poured out to the women coming to end the life of their baby. All I heard were words of hope, offers of help and encouragement that God loves them and their baby, and that he has a plan for their lives. Four women that day changed their minds on the sidewalk; their children’s lives were saved; and in my heart Love Adelaide was born.

I believe that abortion is the number one moral issue of our lives. It is not just an issue: it is the issue. Our generation will go down in history as the one whose leading cause of death is legalised abortion. No other cause, war, genocide, natural disaster or pandemic will ever come close to it.

Worldwide, 1.5 billion lives have been lost to abortion, and over 3 million of these have taken place in Australia over the past 50 years.

Psalm 94: 20-21 says,

“Shall the throne of iniquity, which devises evil by law, have fellowship with you?
They gather together against the life of the righteous, and condemn innocent blood.”

The Lord gave Love Life a strategy to unite and mobilise the churches: a 40-week Journey of Hope run every year, with churches each adopting one week each. An “Adoption Week” involves hearing about the tragic truth of abortion on Sunday; fasting and praying for the unborn on Wednesday; and coming to the abortion clinic on Saturday to worship together and go on a prayer walk around the clinic.

Love Adelaide was created to organise Walk for Life 2020, which was Adelaide’s first pro-life rally in 25 years. With the presentation of legislation to allow abortion up to birth, South Australians came out in large numbers to stand against this great evil. We are still standing against this and we are believing for a great victory to stop up-to-birth abortions sweeping our nation.

Love Adelaide has now launched church partnerships for “Adopt a Week”. We all know we can pray from anywhere at anytime, but it is significant and powerful when God’s people unite and come to the scene. Abortion is the giant in our land, and we must be like David and run at this, unafraid and with full confidence that we do not do this alone. Heaven’s armies go with us!

We all have a place in this great battle. What is your role? Ask, seek, knock. Say, “Yes, Lord. Here I am. Send me.” God’s people are the answer — surrendered lives that will cross the road and get into the ditch with the broken and help meet their needs.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we boldly approach Your throne of grace and mercy and we pray for the church to be united. Awaken the parts of Your body that are currently sleeping! May we be as You prayed, Lord Jesus — “That we may be One as You and the Father are One, so that the world will believe.” May the body of Christ raise her voice to stand against these ungodly bills. We pray for the church to become a refuge for families with unplanned pregnancies. Let us be Your hands and feet, Lord, to support mothers in such an incredible way that they won’t consider turning to abortion in desperation, but rather to us for help. Lord, establish everything quickly that has been stolen from those who were aborted. May we, and the coming generation, powerfully carry out Your mandate for Australia.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
