Noosa’s Satanic Black Mass: A Christian Response

Concerned Christians have reached out to us about the Satanic Black Mass being held in Noosa, Queensland, to coincide with Halloween on the 30th October this year. Noosa Today, a local Sunshine Coast newspaper, reports that it is likely the first public black mass in the state’s history.

The exact nature and purpose of the event is somewhat unclear. On the one hand, the group behind it has stated that they don’t “worship or believe in a literal deity” but instead view Satan as “a powerful metaphor for rebellion against arbitrary authority, as well as a champion of enlightenment, advocating for critical thought and reason”. In particular, the group promotes:

reproductive health and euthanasia, the decriminalisation of illegal drug use as well as causes that would restrict the influence of religious institutions over public schools and other public spaces.

On the other hand, the event’s promotional material reads, “Join us in fellowship as we perform this ancient ritual where the Dark Lord is summoned through Satanic invocations.” And the group’s leader has declared that “Satan has great plans for the Principality of Noosa and Australia.”

It appears that the purpose of the event, at least in part, is to goad Christians who have been calling for greater protections for religious freedom. The group’s leader claims that “thanks to the concerted efforts of our PM, there has been a phenomenal growth of satanism in Australia.”

He added,

In particular we would like to thank Liberal Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells for her speech to parliament stating she would like Australians “to have freedom of religion, either individually or in community with others, in public or private to manifest one’s religion or belief in worship, observance, practice and teaching.

Apparently, then, the group behind the satanic mass has a point to prove.

And on this at least, we must concede that they are right. One of the compromises of living in a democratic society is that if we insist on freedom of speech, conscience and religion for ourselves, then to be fair and maintain our integrity, we must insist on it for everyone — so long as no laws are being broken.

Thomas Jefferson, one of America’s founding fathers, framed this dilemma well when he said,

“It behooves every man who values liberty of conscience for himself, to resist invasions of it in the case of others.”

It would be hypocritical of us to seek protections for our own beliefs and practices but then oppose the same for “rival” groups — even if they happen to be Satanists.

Moreover, if Christians were to wage some kind of political campaign to ensure this event doesn’t go ahead, where does that kind of effort stop? Do we then oppose the construction of every mosque, temple and synagogue in Australia? Do we demand the closure of every New Age store and yoga studio?

Speaking for the Canberra Declaration at least, this is not the kind of “battle for Christian values” that we have been involved in for the last decade, nor is it a front on which we wish to fight. Our advocacy has not been against the freedom of other groups to assemble or unseemly businesses to open their doors. Only when such moves have been taxpayer-sponsored or in public settings that affect the broader community have we opposed them.

As it stands, the black mass in question is a ticketed event inside a privately-owned venue. The group has advertised the event to public, but it is anyone’s choice whether they attend or not.

As the people of God, we are obliged to follow His example. In the garden of Eden, He let Adam and Eve make their choice, despite the consequences. We see the same dynamic in Jesus’ parable, when a heartbroken father allowed his prodigal son to run wild, even though it hurt both of them immensely.

Indeed, Western democracies enjoy freedom of conscience because of such Christian teachings. Freedom is a gift from the Christian worldview that even Satanists benefit from — and that even Christians must extend to others when it doesn’t suit us.

This is not to say that we are silent on beliefs and practices that we disagree with: we will address this shortly. But it does mean that we grant to others the freedoms that we ourselves enjoy — freedoms that flowed into our democracies from Christian theology.

There is another reason that Christians shouldn’t take a combative approach to this. At the end of the day, a satanic black mass is a symptom of our culture’s trouble, not the cause of it. Using our clout to shut down this event would be like trying to combat atheism by silencing Richard Dawkins. Not only is Dawkins not to blame for atheism: if Christians could successfully gag him, ten more atheists may just rise up to take his noisy place.

In other words, our culture’s current crisis goes much deeper than momentary manifestations of unbelief. If a tree is dying, tending to its leaves will achieve little. What Australia needs is renewal at a deeper level. So let us now turn to this.

The campaign for Christian values is always a campaign for the Gospel. At the heart of the Gospel is the revelation that obeying the law cannot save us — and that it is impossible for unredeemed humans to obey it anyway. If we want to see our own lives and our culture aligned with God’s will, we need personal and corporate revival. Only when we have repented of our sin and believed in Jesus’ saving work can we live in a way that pleases God.

The shortcut to cultural renewal is a mass movement of hearts returning to God. As Paul said in 2 Corinthians 5:20,

“We are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making His appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, ‘Come back to God!’”

The good news of Jesus is the message that Australians most need to hear. Our main response to this black mass is to pray for the salvation of those involved.

On the cross, Jesus prayed, “Father forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Jesus is our example, and His life is witness to the truth that love is the greatest force in the world. As St. Francis of Assisi prayed,

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy.

So Lord, we pray for these dear people’s salvation — that they would see Jesus and His glorious love on the cross. We pray they would understand that the blood of Jesus Christ declares that they are forgiven in Jesus’ name. Father, draw them to Yourself and reveal your great love for them in Jesus’ name. Amen!

When actual laws are being broken or other image-bearers are being injured, our appeal is to earthly courts. Measurable pain and damage is why the Canberra Declaration is so active on issues like abortion, euthanasia, biblical marriage and religious freedom. But when the problem is simply one of unbelief, our appeal is before the courts of Heaven.

This is where the true nature of the battle lies. As we read in Ephesians 6:12,

“We are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.”

Left to our own devices, ours would be a lost cause, given that the devil and his army are a lot older and more experienced than we. But Jesus Christ is victorious, and we are hidden in Him.

“So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God.
There we will receive His mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.”
~ Hebrews 4:16

This is a battle we fight best on our knees. And as God’s people, it is one that we can fight on behalf of our nation. In 2 Chronicles 7:14, God has promised that

“If my people who are called by My name will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from Heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.”

If God is moving you to join with other believers in this prayer battle for our nation, we encourage you to seek them out and pray together. Joining with each other in prayer and humility, we can make a difference. This is a battle we must win on our knees.

In Nambour, we are having a week of prayer each night at different Churches, then joining together on Friday night at New Life Church in McKenzie Rd Woombye to gather to pray while this black mass happens, and many others across the Sunshine Coast are doing the same.

When the enemy comes in like a flood the Spirit of the Lord will lift a standard. You speak of religious freedom and we should not try to gag or stop such an event.Did the writer of the article give any thought to the young people influenced by this event? We are wrestling against the works of darkness. I feel this attitude of of “live and let live”while Satan is planning to “seduce and seduct “ is weak and frankly gutless. We are not called to just sit and pray we are in a war.Our country is in the state it is because the church is complacent and does not denounce the wicked polices and agendas. An eye test is needed lest we are blinded by Satan. The attitude is when popularity interferes with truth let truth go.We need Christians who will take up their cross ,who are willing to lay down their lives .People who willing to speak out against the works of darkness. The Church of God must arise .

We all can read the terrible history when the ‘church’ had the ability to dictate what was acceptable and what was not. Praying and speaking against these events- it goes without saying. but trying to shut them down using the law of the land always comes back to bite us, whether by limiting our own freedoms or by the abuse of them. The kingdom of God is one heart at a time, not a political message….

And Ron, just wondering what your response is. It’s so easy to point the finger. Blessings, Annette

Ron: I didn’t get the message that”we just sit there and pray”. There was nothing in Warwick and Kurt’s message that said “Live and let live” while satan is planning to “seduce and seduct”. Prayer is an almighty battle. It is an absolute struggle and takes effort and determination to do battle against the powers of darkness. There is nothing “live and let live” about it. It is hard work. Those of us who spend time with our Saviour and our Heavenly Father find that it is only then that we have the strength and the wisdom and the wherewithal to speak up at the right time and the right way in public. I cannot do it effectively wiithout praying. Where I live there have been plenty of opportunities to engage young people during these Covid months here in Melbourne. Most are completely Biblically illiterate and to my amazement have been open to listening to the Gospel for the first time. Two boys came back home here to get Bible/N.T. each. Some of these young ones are in deep need.

I understand what you are saying and I agree that it is a time to really lift Jesus up. Worship is also spiritual warfare. However I am also in agreement somewhat with the previous writer. The Church needs to have a voice on this matter; to speak up. Just as we need to speak up for other social ills, not in a confrontational way. Silence on the matter can be mistaken for complicity.

I appreciate your sentiments, but where in Scripture do you find evidence for the statement that worshuip is spiritual warfare? It is clearly part of it, but the one weapon that is repeatedly mentioned in the Bible is the sword of the Spirit. This is the weapon that Jesus uses in the book of Revelation. It is the weapon he himself used in the temptation in the desert. It is the one weapon he told the disciples to use when he commissioned them. The great need in our society is for continued proclamation of the gospel, which is the Word of Truth (Eph 1:13; 2 Tim 2:15 etc), in the power of the Spirit. When people don’t know the truth they follow error. Spiritual warfare is primarily the preaching of the gospel. This is how it was done in the early church (as the whole book of Acts makes crystal clear). This is how it needs to be done today.

The J Theatre where this Black Mass is being held is a venue even for weekly church services. The place will be cursed land after the Black Mass, as will probably be Noosa and Queensland. Can we have a prayer vigil outside from earlier in the day until the event finishes? And walking around the place to sanctify and put a boundary against satanic powers? I am two hours away but seriously thinking of going and doing this most of Friday. Will someone from Noosa, Sunshine Coast area please put out a call.

Satan hates praise to our Lord and God! Can churches surrounding this Black Mass sing praises to God between the prayers?
Please read 2 Chronicles 20. The priests went BEFORE the army singing praises to God!
    Find out what GOD did!
OUR GOD IS SOVEREIGN, AND HE IS THE SAME YESTERDAY, TODAY AND FOREVER!

Prayer warriors are needed. Not all baptised persons should presume that this is a work they are called to do simply on the basis of their baptism.
Take this seriously, if you are living in un-repented sin you will be a sitting duck for satanic backlash.

Remember to put on the full armour of God, seek the protection of the blood of Christ and if at all possible be fasting.

Prayers aren’t eorking… The black mass is still going ahead and there is in some cases a grudging acceptance of freedom of speech. So why aren’t prayers working?

God thinks it should go ahead?

If you are addressing me, part of what you say is well covered by the above blog.

God permits sin and it has been very rare where he actively stopped or destroyed the sinners. The Flood, Sodom and Gomorrah, the Egyptian Pharaoh’s army come to mind.

We are not, and will not, try to stop them: (… our enemies are not of flesh and blood…) but aim to engage in spiritual warfare against their work.
They aim to curse, we aim to block the curses and call protection down from the Lord in various manners – legions of angels, Holy Spirit power, praise and worship of the One True God, fasting and sacrifice and the like.

Could not agree with you more dear Philip!!! This is a battle but it is a battle of love and the blood of Christ
    cries out we love you!!!!!!!

    A well written article.
The response of the ‘John’ in me was ‘Lord, send a howling storm & throw lightning bolts at the event.’
But as Paul reminds Timothy, as believers ‘We do not have a spirit of fear, but of power and love and a sound mind.’
Power, Belivers are the temples, the residence of the Holy Spirit of God.
Greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world.
Love, Was there a Saul of Tarsus in the meeting on Friday night? Who could have been a more staunch opponent of the young Christian Church. After being confronted by the Risen Christ, the Apostle Paul is now equally zealous for his new found faith.
A Sound Mind should remind us that violence and abusive behavior achieves nothing but reduces us to a level of mindless impotence and defeat.
Will we achieve more with prayer that those who took part in Friday nights event will be left empty, hollow and seeking reality. That they will come away from that event open to the light of the Gospel of Christ that brings light and hope into a world groping in darkness.

Your analysis of the Satanists “having a point” on religious liberty is completely erroneous.

Firstly Satanism is a cult, not a religion so the classification is incorrect to start with. It is an anti- life cult as well, hence its support of both euthanasia and abortion. ( As an aside, Lucien Greaves the head of The satanic temple in the US recently demanded protection under the constitution to make sure his followers continued to have access to abortion procedures as they were ”part of the ceremonies of Satanism”. )

Secondly, it is a pure form of hate speech. While we don’t know the exact menu for the recent ”black mass”, we do know that it is a blasphemous parody of the Catholic mass, where the body of Christ (often attained from a valid mass) is blasphemed and desecrated. Hardly a normal religion!

The outright lie of Satanists that they don’t actually believe in a personified entity, ie Satan, is totally discredited by their own words. For example, in this instance they ”invoke the dark lord”, and ”Satan has great plans for Noosa” etc…Who is this directed at if they believe in nothing? Fresh air? A study of what is entailed in a Black Mass further validates this claim.

Christians need to have the courage to call these people out and challenge them. They are out to neutralise Christianity with the hope of destroying it. Soft responses won’t work. We need to show both faith in Christ and backbone to defeat their aims.
