UN Human Rights Chief Commends Human Rights Abusers
United Nations Human Rights High Commissioner Michelle Bachelet appears to have commended China for protecting human rights while visiting the country to investigate its alleged human rights abuses.
Bachelet, a socialist with ties to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), and former two-time Chilean President, kickstarted her six-day tour of China via video conference with CCP head Xi Jinping.
A statement from China’s foreign ministry said Bachelet ‘expressed admiration for China’s efforts and achievements in protecting human rights.’
On May 23, FM Wang Yi met with the visiting #UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet in Guangzhou.

The press release also cited Bachelet offering admiration for the CCP’s fight against ‘poverty, economic and social development’, ‘climate change’, and for ‘promoting sustainable development across the world.’
A likely green tick from the UN for the Communist Chinese Party’s dubious ‘Belt and Road’ debt slave initiative.
According to the CCP, the UNHRC told the regime that it wants to ‘enhance communication and explore cooperation with the Chinese side,’ to help promote the ‘progress of the global human rights cause.’
Volte-face
Bachelet’s affirmations signal a massive shift in sympathies by the UN.
Her comments stand in stark contrast to at least 39 United Nations members, who in 2020 ‘rebuked the Chinese government’s human rights violations.’
Then German Ambassador to the UN (2017-2021), Christoph Heusgen, issued a statement on behalf of 39 countries that were ‘gravely concerned about the human rights situation in Xinjiang and the recent developments in Hong Kong.’
Heusgen’s listed reasons for concern included ‘credible reports of large political re-education camps’, as well as ‘severe restrictions on freedom of religion or belief and the freedoms of movement, association, and expression as well as on Uyghur culture.’
Egregious
Coinciding with the appalling comments ascribed to the UNHRC high commissioner, Victims of Communism released an ‘explosive’ data dump exposing the dark underbelly of the socialist country’s authoritarian rule.
VOC posted a two-page media statement, stating,
‘These files provide researchers with thousands of images of detained Uyghurs, as well as photos of police guards wielding automatic weapons and handcuffing and shackling detainees during camp security drills.’
The memorial foundation added,
‘The files also contain unusually candid speeches reflecting the state of mind of leading officials. They show Xinjiang’s former Party Secretary Chen Quanguo’s impassioned demands to treat persons from ethnic groups like dangerous criminals, to prevent any camp escapes, and to readily open fire to stop escapees.’
Commenting on the importance of the data dump, VOC CEO, Andrew Bremberg said,
“These documents conclusively demonstrate that Beijing has been lying about its gross human rights violations in Xinjiang. The international community must take immediate and concrete action to hold China accountable for these atrocities.”
From potential genocide, to the mistreatment of prisoners, aggressive suppression of civil liberties, up to belligerent ‘wolf diplomacy,’ there is a clear pattern of human rights violations still being committed by Chairman Mao’s red state.
Despite the mounting evidence, Communist Chinese leader Xi Jinping reassured the UN Human Rights envoy that “the human rights of the Chinese people are guaranteed like never before.”
While acknowledging the reasons for her visit, Breitbart observed, there is ‘no indication Bachelet challenged Xi’s claim of complete success in protecting human rights.’
There also doesn’t appear to have been any attempt by the United Nations HR commissioner to ‘raise any of the many human rights atrocities China stands accused of committing.’
Breitbart also said, ‘Bachelet and her office are expected to draft a report on Chinese human rights abuses in East Turkistan following her visit.’
Bachelet’s office has denied “praising” the CCP, telling Voice of America, ‘she did commend China on poverty. She did not “admire” China’s efforts and achievements in eradicating poverty, protecting human rights.’
ALP Chimes In
The UNHRC’s reported comments are similar to those of Australian Labor deputy, Richard Marles who, in 2017, used “poverty” eradication to praise the CCP for its human rights record.
Marles, who is set to become Australia’s Defence Minister, stated,
“We embrace the rise of China, and recognise China’s contribution to humanity, which is the single biggest eradication of human poverty in history.”
He added,
“China is, on balance, unquestionably a force for good […] You can make an argument that it’s as big a contribution to human rights in terms of the alleviation of poverty that comes from it that we have seen in our lifetimes.”
Marles made the comments during a question-and-answer discussion at Oxford.
When recently queried about the 2017 statement, the future Defence Minister dodged the question, and attacked the LNP, accusing them of playing politics instead.
The Labor deputy’s response is not unlike Xi Jinping telling Bachelet that he ‘opposed the “politicisation” of human rights.’
Nor does it differ all that much from the Communist Chinese Party, which tends to dismiss all criticism of its human rights record as being “politically driven.”
Juxtaposed, Bachelet and Marles’ commending human rights abusers for their human rights record is ludicrous. It sits in the same Leftist vein as believing that “abortion is healthcare.”
