Majority of Senate Vote to Deny Medical Care to Dying Babies Born Alive After a Failed Abortion

21 August 2024

5.3 MINS

Senator Babet and the 17 senators who supported his motion of urgency for medical care for unwanted babies born after a failed abortion are to be congratulated.

A motion by Senator Ralph Babet to acknowledge that babies born alive after an abortion deserve medical care was defeated in the Senate 18 to 32 yesterday, Tuesday 20 August.

Four Liberal and 28 Greens and Labor senators united to oppose the motion of urgency acknowledging this humanitarian crisis.

Senator Babet’s Opening Speech

In his opening speech, Senator Ralph Babet began, “This should not be a contentious or controversial concept. It is the very minimum of decency, the very least that we should do as people who like to think of ourselves as civilised.”

He continued, “I cannot for the life of me understand how we can bang on every single day in this place about the importance of human rights while allowing the most vulnerable human beings to be treated like garbage.”

Widely viewed on social media was the occasion when Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young made a vomit gesture at Senator Babet while he spoke these words,

“Whatever one’s view is on the merits or otherwise of abortion, once there has been a birth, medical practitioners are dealing with a living, human being. A person. An Australian. Who should have the same rights under law as you or I.”

Babet continued, “A society that refuses to care about the suffering and death of babies is one which is destined to fall.”

“To be unmoved by the plight of a helpless child, especially when it is within your power to render assistance, is to lose your own humanity. It is evidence of a sickness at the very core of one’s own being.

“What kind of darkness has overtaken the hearts of people when they can march through city streets chanting for the right to kill a baby in the womb while remaining silent on the right of babies born alive and left to die.”

Motion Denied

False Claims and Deliberate Avoidance

In her passioned speech against the motion, Greens Senator Larissa Waters began, “I am appalled that once again we’re here debating women’s choices over their own bodies. Choices that are no one else’s to weigh in on.

“Senator Babet’s claims are incorrect. Late-term abortions resulting in a live foetus are extremely rare. And they only occur in situations of lethal foetal abnormalities or serious risks to the pregnant person.”

But it’s Waters’ grasp of reality that is appalling. Firstly, the motion is not talking about the mother’s body. To point out the obvious (apparently necessary), we are talking about live babies now separated from their mothers.

Second, these tragic occurrences are not “extremely rare”. Live births after a failed abortion average over one per week in Australia.

We are devoid of data for some states and territories. But statistics record that between 2010–2020, 724 babies in Queensland and Victoria were born alive and left to die.

That’s over one per week in these two states alone.

Also incorrect is Senator Waters’ claim that these live births “occur only in situations of lethal foetal abnormalities or serious risks to the pregnant person.”

Melissa Ohden was born alive after a failed abortion but has gone on to live a healthy life. As the BBC reported, “Melissa was placed among medical waste.

“That was, until a nurse heard her weak cries and slight movements.

“Melissa was rushed to an intensive care unit, where – against the odds – she survived.”

Melissa’s grandmother had pressured her daughter to have the abortion. Her grandmother was friends with the abortionist, and the two of them coerced Melissa’s birth mother to kill the baby in her womb. But Melissa survived the failed abortion.

Melissa explained, “Together they literally forced the abortion on my birth mother against her will.”

Melissa’s mother was not even aware that her baby had survived and was brought up by an adopted family. Now reunited, Melissa and her birth mother now see each other “as often as we possibly can”.

Those arguing against the motion and the Human Rights (Children Born Alive Protection) Bill 2022 claim it is unnecessary. The practices of abortionist doctors are all above board, there are no instances of neglect, and we should trust them and let them get on with their jobs.

The reality is that harrowing accounts such as midwife Louise Adsett at a Queensland parliamentary inquiry demonstrate otherwise.

Moving Forward

In his speech, Senator Babet articulated his position with clarity and grace. He revealed his vision for Australia with these words,

“I think abortion should be unthinkable. I want more than a change to the laws of this land.

“I want a change in the hearts of the Australian people. Where abortion disappears.

“Not because politicians made it illegal. But because our consciences were reawakened and we agreed that it was abominable.”

Senator Babet is correct that real, lasting change cannot come from Canberra alone. We must see a change in the hearts of the Australian people.

We have a long way to go to see godly righteousness in the area of sexuality, family and children reclaimed in Australia.

But the task to make disciples of Jesus by teaching them to obey what he commanded (including in the areas of of sexuality, family and children) is not beyond the Church.

After all, Jesus has given His Church His full authority to do the task (Matthew 28:18–20). But disciples of Jesus have a lot of work to do.

The question put before the Senate to reject or accept read,

“The need for the Senate to recognise that at least one baby is born alive every 7 days following a failed abortion and left to die, and that Australia’s health care system is enabling these inhumane deaths; and for the Senate to condemn this practice, noting that babies born alive as a result of a failed abortion deserve care.”

In his speech, Babet asked, “Now imagine if the Senate rejected such a proposal.

“What would it say if you shrugged your shoulders and turned your back on a newborn baby, unmoved by his or her cry, and unconvinced by his or her humanity?”

Now that the votes are on public record, we no longer have to imagine.

Sam, I am gutted! where have we come to as a nation? We have we voted into parliament? Yes we can be appalled at the 32, but lets wake up, we voted them.

Thanks for reporting on the outcome of Senator Babat’s courageous motion. I too am appalled that the senate has voted not to extend care to aborted babies who survive. What does this say about our nation? Yes, we did vote for them but are they acting as our representatives? is their vote a reflection of societies attitudes?

Well now we know and the pollies had to put their face to their vote. Still I am heartened by the 18.

So sad that the opponents of this bill do not realise that they are only alive today because their parents cared enough abought life to nurture their newborn child…

I am very surprised at Simon Bermingham voting to not help dying children.

Agree John. This is so wrong.

We didn’t all vote the “no’s” in, but tragically it does reflect the moral state of this nation. Many costiuents however are unaware. We pray this exposure will have a positive effect. And we do need revival!🙏

I am devastated that Senator Babets bill did not pass, what a sad indictment on our nation. Senator Hanson-Youngs actions are deplorable and I am very disappointed and surprised in Simon Birmingham .

The 4 libs who voted against the motion and the 2 independents who did likewise need to be vigorously campaigned against. As for Labor and the greens, we all know that sitting members in both parties cannot vote against their stated policies. Abortion to full term is the policy of both. How any person who calls themself a Christian can vote for a member of parliament who denies the most basic ‘right’ of all the right to life is a great mystery

    Isaiah 8:20
To the Law and to the Testimony !
If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them !

    Romans 10:13-15
Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
How then can they call on the One they have not believed in?
And how can they believe in the One of whom they have not heard?
And how can they hear without someone preaching to them ?
And how can they preach unless they are sent ?

    Ignorance is NOT bliss.
Education in the historic truths of the bible is desperately needed in our nation.

This miscarriage of justice must not be allowed to be the last word and the fight for the most innocent ( newborn babies ) has to continue.
The politicians who voted against this will get their just deserts either at the ballot box or when they die and face the great judge of us all.
This cofirms in my mind that the majority of our elected officials are without a shred of humanity or compassion for other human beings.
God bless those who fought for this bill and for the little innocents.

“Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a reproach to any people.” The “any people” in this Bible proverb certainly includes the
32 Senators who voted for murder and against life, as well as the 26 who abstained or didn’t care enough to be present to vote.
Thank God for the 18 who care about suffering babies. The fight continues.

See my comment below about Senators not voting. Often they are ‘paired’.

  12. Kym in Adelaide 21 August 2024 at 6:25 pm - Reply

Site note: On another platform someone was concerned about some Senators not voting.

Sen Alex Antic was not there and did not vote but was ‘paired’.
What that means is his Yes vote was matched with a left Senator who was going to vote No (done by agreement).
This is normal in parliamentary procedure.

So someone not voting does not mean they don’t strongly support the bill.

Please do not misconstrue not voting with not supporting the bill (or being against it).

    • Steve Terek 21 August 2024 at 10:21 pm - Reply

I’m sorry, Kym, but be it normal parliamentary procedure or not, it is unacceptable. There is no excuse for members of parliament to absent themselves from voting on such and issue, or any issue, for that matter. They were elected to represent their constituency, and we, the taxpayers of this nation, are paying them to do that.

100% correct! Alot of a representatives in Parliament are a law to themselves. The arrogance of them!

    • Samuel Hartwich 23 August 2024 at 5:19 pm - Reply

Senator Antic was on personal leave due to the birth of his second child. His vote was paired as Kym explained above. By putting his family first and being there for his wife and children, he is leading by example and showing the infinite value of fatherhood and family.

Yes, this is disgusting. How low these pollies will go when paid enough to do so. They will get their just reward for opposing this opportunity to save babies and redeem their own souls!!!!

If it is about a woman’s body, then what part of that woman’s body is left to die on the metal kidney dish??
Or could it be that it this is actually about TWO people who are involved in any abortion. A mother and the unborn person, (whose rights are not being considered here).

Where there is no fear of God, there is no fear of the judgement yet to be brought to those who have such disregard, and our own Nation. Ignorance is on their own heads. How long before the Call is made ?

The so called politicians that denied defenceless babies to be cared for when surviving a cruel abortion ought to experience themselves the pain of neglect. Let them be denied their wages, homes, families, friends, food, fluids and any source of help. How would they go starving, thirsty and taken to a dump. Maybe they need to experience that, to wake them up from their inhumanity. It took King Nebuchadnezzar, feared king of the whole known world to find out and admit that “Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honour the King of Heaven, all of His works are truth, and His ways, justice, And those who walk in pride He is able to abase. (Daniel 4). Nebuchadnezzar learnt this by being reduced to being an animal with the heart of an animal and living in a field, eating grass with oxen and growing feathers and claws. (v33).
Politicians who vote for murder and all those participating in abortion are under a self inflicted curse. and our country too. Only real repentance will save them.

I am absolutely agree with all your comments, to think there are people that agree with killing of babies, and outspoken about it, is bondage to darkness, and putting their minds into greater and greater darkness, cannot …think of that scripture? can only find, their minds are corrupt 1Timothy 6;5. SO how do we pray….the though that came to my mind was LORD give them dreams that will scare them, to understand what their decisions mean? to turn them from their wicked thoughts to bring them understanding of right and wrong to bring them to repentence AMEN
