2025 Election Result: A Cause for Rejoicing?

6 May 2025

The 2025 election result is likely to become the stuff of legend. So too will the avalanche of commentary that follows.

Pundits, both seasoned and fresh, will dissect and debate what happened, why it happened, and what it all means. But for many of us, that’s not where the real story lies.

Our hope and joy aren’t found in political parties or electoral swings. They’re in something deeper—in what God might be doing behind the scenes. As always, His work is surprising, counterintuitive, and, for those who are watching, a cause for great rejoicing.

The Quiet Revival

In recent months, a phrase has been slipping into Christian conversations: the quiet revival. Perhaps you’ve heard it. It describes an unexpected and remarkable turning back to faith, especially among Gen Z. This is happening most notably in the UK—a surprising and grace-filled move of God.

What’s most encouraging? This revival isn’t gravitating toward the tired, increasingly compromised institutions like the Church of England—or even some of its smaller, equally “woke” counterparts. Instead, there’s a growing hunger for authentic fellowship, biblical truth, and real answers to life’s questions. People are seeking meaning, not performance; substance, not spectacle.

Disenchantment is Fuelling the Gospel

So what does this have to do with us here in Australia?

It’s the context of this revival that’s most instructive. The spark behind the renewed interest in the Gospel appears to be a growing disenchantment with today’s social and ideological orthodoxies.

From the destructive fallout of movements like Black Lives Matter, to the shocking rise in antisemitism, to the dead-end confusion of post-modern relativism—many are finding the modern world a deeply unstable place. It’s like being tossed on a stormy sea without a compass. Or, to change metaphors: life without firm moral boundaries feels more like a jungle. The call of the wild, in urban form.

And that, oddly enough, can be good news.

How Governments Create Hunger for the Gospel

There is no value in painting every member of any political party with some sort of conspiratorial malevolence towards our preferred values. But it’s fair to note that much of the Labor left leans toward Marxist ideology—which, by its very nature, seeks to dismantle long-held Judaeo-Christian values. Marxism doesn’t tolerate rivals. It demands total governmental control.

So, if in countries like the UK, this drift toward Christ is being sparked (in part) by failed institutions and ideological chaos, perhaps—just perhaps—the best thing that could have happened to Australia is a left-wing, woke-Marxist government.

Last weekend’s historic election result may not have answered our prayers in the way conservative evangelicals hoped. But could it be that God, in His wisdom, has handed us a season of divine opportunity? After all, it is the hungry, not the well-fed, who go looking for bread.

If Australia follows Britain, the price of faith may rise. Being labelled a social pariah might become the norm. But even then, God will be at work—using the very ideologies that deny His existence to draw people toward Himself.

Faith in the Fire

Yes, it may get uncomfortable. In the UK, arrests for public expressions of Christian faith—street preaching, Bible reading, even hymn singing—are becoming alarmingly routine. But each arrest reveals the true nature of the prevailing power structures. And more than that, it reminds us of the infinite worth of what we hold dear.

It also stirs curiosity.

Peter’s words ring as true now as ever:

“Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” (1 Peter 3:15)

A Call to Reprioritise

An anti-Christian climate may compel the Church to rethink its priorities. Instead of pouring funds into executive salaries, sleek infrastructure, and dazzling worship productions, perhaps we’ll be called back to the basics: caring for those in need, supporting believers who’ve lost jobs or housing, and showing up for those struggling to make ends meet. This has always been God’s priority.

Maybe we should thank God that He didn’t answer our prayers the way we expected. God is a free agent. He acts as He wills to achieve His overarching purposes. His answers to prayer – often seen in retrospect – cause surprise and delight.

After all, isn’t that just like Him?

Even Babylon—horrific as it was for the faithful in Israel—was described as “a gold cup in the Lord’s hand” (Jeremiah 51:7). A vessel of value, used by God for refining His people and advancing His greater geo-political strategy.

Today, the spiritual bankruptcy and ideological brutality of modern regimes are leading people to long for a better kingdom—and a greater King.

What Now?

A few reflections rise to the surface.

First, we should heartily praise God for such a convincing display of his will.

Second, we should prepare for a harvest, able to offer more than just a seat in a Sunday concert to those seeking truth.

Third, we should pray for our government asking that through its worst, God will do his best.

As has always been the case, God says:

“I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me;
I was found by those who did not seek me.
To a nation that did not call on my name, I said, ‘Here am I, here am I.’”
(Isaiah 65:1)
