From Sleaze to Christ: Ditching Adult Films for Abundant Life
Former porn performers turning to Christ reveal the power of true redemption. This article explores their stories, the struggles they face, and the grace that sets captives free.
Christ Transforms the Most Broken Lives
God has long been in the business of transforming lives. Whether drug addicts, gang members, murderers, or those trapped in the adult film industry, Jesus came to set captives free. This has been true for two thousand years and will remain true until He returns. In recent years, a number of former porn performers have joined the growing list of people whose lives Christ has turned around.
Nearly two decades ago, I wrote about the destructive influence of the porn culture and said:
“… for many girls and young women today, they have been so saturated by a porn-soaked culture, that they feel the only way they can really be a woman is to dress and act like a porn star. Indeed, one porn star even wrote a best-seller entitled, “How to Make Love Like a Porn Star“. When books such as that become best-sellers, then popular culture has pretty much hit rock bottom. And we are all paying a high price for such a sewage-ridden culture.”
A reader suggested that the book was not actually endorsing the lifestyle. At the time, I doubted that claim and chose not to publish his comment. But with the benefit of hindsight, and in light of more recent developments, perhaps he was closer to the truth than I realised.
A Former Star’s New Direction
The performer in question was Jenna Jameson. Her 2010 book carried the subtitle “A Cautionary Tale”, which may indicate she was already sounding an alarm about the sleaze industry. Today, multiple reports claim she has embraced Christianity and is openly warning others about the world she once inhabited. One story notes:
Jenna Jameson has moved beyond her adult film actress past in order to help others “find Jesus.” Jameson opened up about her redemption as she reflected on her past career choices. “After decades of being known for my body and sin, getting baptized and helping others find Jesus too,” she wrote over a video shared to Instagram Reels. Jameson chose audio accompanying the video that stated, “Switching sides.”
Jameson’s rep told Fox News Digital, “Jenna is being loud and proud about her walk with Jesus Christ. She believes that boldly proclaiming her love for Him is helping open so many people’s eyes to the truth that no one is beyond redemption.”
I shared this news on social media and urged readers: “Pray that she is indeed a real convert who can now help others in the sleaze industry.” When someone asked whether she was a real Christian or not, I replied, “God alone really knows.” That remains the essential point: she needs prayer.
Others Who Have Left the Industry
The encouraging news is that Jameson is not alone. Over the years, several performers have left the adult industry to follow Christ. One of the most significant was Shelley Lubben, whose 2010 book Truth Behind the Fantasy of Porn exposed the misery beneath the glitter. Her ministry sought to rescue women trapped in porn, drugs, and prostitution.
As I once wrote:
She now has a full-time ministry telling the truth about the wretched porn industry, and helping women trapped in it: “As a child, Shelley had dreamed of being a preacher. Having received her bachelor’s of theology degree, she is indeed a preacher now, sharing her testimony of transformation and rescue out of drugs, porn, and prostitution ‘by the power of Jesus Christ.’ Her website says:
“Now happily married to Garrett, her husband, and the mother of three daughters, Shelley takes a message of transformation against-all-odds to prisons, TV, radio, film, conferences and rescue missions. She has been a guest on talk shows such as Dr. Phil, Michael Reagan and most recently, FOXNews. Her message is one of exposing the $57 billion porn industry for what it is—full of lies and deceit, addiction and broken lives.
Shelley maintains that women who turn to the industry to make money ‘probably didn’t grow up in healthy childhoods. Almost all pornography performers were sexually assaulted as children,’ she says, but hide their broken hearts. ‘That would kill the fantasy, now wouldn’t it?’”
Her testimony included frank insights about the backgrounds of many performers and the hidden pain that fuels the industry. See more on her remarkable transformation here, here, and here.
A further example appears in a recently updated article featuring twelve former porn stars who turned to Christ. One story involves Brittni Ruiz (formerly Jenna Presley):
“The devil wanted me back, but God kept tugging at me… I never found love in my life and was looking for it in all the wrong places. I have finally encountered the unconditional love of God, and I will never go back.”
The Road of Transformation
Stories like these remind us that real change is possible. For many, the journey is slow, painful, and marked by spiritual battles. Old habits, destructive environments, and deep wounds do not vanish overnight. Yet the grace of God is powerful enough to break chains the world considers unbreakable.
One of Christianity’s central truths is that no one is beyond the reach of Christ. The porn industry sells illusions, preys on the vulnerable, destroys lives, and leaves countless people emotionally and spiritually shattered. Yet God specialises in restoring the most damaged hearts. The process may involve setbacks, temptations, and moments of uncertainty, but the transforming power of Christ is not measured by speed — only by faithfulness.
As Jesus said in John 10:10, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” This promise applies even to those whom society treats as too far gone.
Pray for Those Leaving the Industry
Those stepping out of the adult industry face real dangers: old relationships tug at them, financial pressures tempt them, and memories haunt them. Many must rebuild their identity from scratch. Those who genuinely trust Christ often have to confront not only their past sins but the sins committed against them — wounds many carried long before they entered the industry.
For these reasons, prayer is essential. We should pray that conversions are genuine, that spiritual support surrounds them, and that they grow into bold witnesses for the truth. Their testimonies can reach places and people that most Christians never could.
Pray especially for Jenna Jameson and all who have recently left the world of pornography. Their decisions will not be welcomed by those who profit from their brokenness. They need courage, protection, and the steady comfort of God’s Word as they learn to walk in newness of life.
Christ has set countless captives free before. He will continue to do so. And every time someone steps out of the shadows and into His light, the kingdom of God advances and hell loses ground.

Let me offer the first comment here. When I posted this article on CultureWatch one week ago, I very quickly had to add a follow-up comment below it. I share it here:
In a Vision Christian radio interview on the Jameson story I said that we need to be careful about ‘celebrity conversions.’ We should not put these folks on a pedestal, and we need to ensure that they mature a bit and get proper discipleship.
And I was told on the social media that same day that the Shelley Lubben situation did not end well. I had not followed her story, so I was surprised and saddened to hear this. I looked around and found this article on her life. It said in part:
“She had an affair in 2015, divorced Garrett in 2016, then closed the Pink Cross Foundation. She became angry at God and fell back into drugs and alcohol. On March of 2018, Shelley’s home burned to the ground in what was called a drug lab explosion. . . . On February 9, 2019, Shelley was found dead in a trailer park in California, alone, with conflicting reports as to the cause of her death. She was 50.” https://www.blazinggrace.org/a-tragic-story/
So my point is this: We do need to be cautious with these sorts of conversion testimonies. These folks need a lot of prayer.
Many thanks Glenice for your thoughtful, helpful, godly and edifying remarks. They are just what this discussion needed! Bless you richly.
