10 Reasons the Bible Is the Greatest Book in Existence — and Should Be Read by Everyone

31 December 2025

5.4 MINS

The Bible’s historical depth, moral wisdom and spiritual power explain why it remains the most read, translated and life-changing book in human history.

The Bible is not merely an ancient book on a shelf. It is the most sold, most translated, and most influential book in human history.

Dr Vishal Mangalwadi, author of The Book That Made Your World, has said, “The Bible created the modern world of science and learning because it gave us the Creator’s vision of what reality is all about.”

Whether you approach the Bible as a believer seeking spiritual growth or as a secular reader exploring human wisdom and history, the Bible offers a depth of meaning and transformation found in no other book.

Both my wife and I are passionate advocates for the benefits of reading the Scriptures, as we explain in the video below.

Here are my top 10 reasons for why the Bible stands above all other books — and why we all benefit from reading the Bible daily and all the way through.

1. The Bible Is the Most Widely-Read and Best-Selling Book in History

More copies of the Bible have been sold and distributed than any other book — in fact, over 6 billion worldwide. This book has shaped nations, cultures, laws and individual lives across centuries.

Psalm 119:105 declares: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” It’s true — Scripture guides one’s daily life with divine clarity. If you want God’s guidance, in other words, read the Bible!

2. The Bible Is the Most Translated Book of All Time

The Scriptures have been translated into thousands of languages — more than any other book on earth. Full or partial translations now exist in over 4,000 languages.

As we read in 2 Timothy 3:16, “All Scripture is breathed out by God…” Believers have long understood God’s desire to communicate with every people group. This extraordinary translation effort — and the demand that drives it — reflects the Bible’s universal appeal and historic impact.

3. The Bible’s Historical Reliability Is Extraordinary

Archaeology and textual studies have confirmed the many people, places and events described in Scripture Its manuscripts predate most ancient texts from other traditions.

Psalm 119:89, in the Amplified Bible, reads: “Forever, O LORD, Your word is settled in heaven [standing firm and unchangeable].” According to one calculation, there are 332 Messianic prophecies from the Hebrew Bible — the Old Testament — which Jesus fulfilled. The amazing historical accuracy of the Bible reinforces our confidence in the Word of God and the Bible as God’s unchanging truth.

4. The Bible Was Written Over Many Centuries Yet Has a Unified Message

The Bible was written by over 40 authors across 1,500 years. It contains 66 separate books, yet it presents a coherent message — from creation in Genesis to final redemption in Revelation. This redemption comes through Christ, the living hope and light of the world. Such unity is unparalleled in world literature.

Psalm 119:130 says, “The entrance of your words gives light…” For Christians, this speaks to the consistency of God’s revelation. For students of literature and history, it demonstrates remarkable textual harmony across genres. Either way, reading the Bible will give you light you have never experienced. As it says in Psalm 36:9, “In your light we see light.”

5. The Bible Contains Deep Moral and Ethical Wisdom

Many moral principles still held high in the modern world have their roots directly in biblical teaching — such as justice, mercy and human dignity. These concepts have influenced law, human rights and ethical thought the world over.

In Matthew 7:12, Jesus said, “whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them”. This is Jesus’ succinct summary of God’s perfect moral will. Also known as the ‘Golden Rule’, this principle is respected widely for its universal human insight into every culture on the planet. Indeed, all of our human rights can be credited to the life and teachings of Jesus Christ as revealed in the Bible.

6. The Bible is the Most Honest Book in the World and Provides Answers to Life’s Biggest Questions

The Bible tells the good and the bad about people. Benjamin Rush said, “The Bible contains more truth than any other book in the world.” Scripture’s brutal honesty fills the heart with hope. Questions like, Why am I here? What is suffering? and What happens after death? are addressed throughout Scripture, answering the questions of both our hearts and our minds.

As Proverbs 1:7 teaches, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge.” Anyone can find purpose and peace in God through his Word. A. W. Tozer said, “The Holy Scriptures tell us what we could never learn any other way: they tell us what we are, who we are, how we got here, why we are here and what we are required to do while we remain here.”

7. Daily Bible Reading Nourishes the Soul and Mind

Daily Bible reading has been linked in research to increased compassion, generosity and personal wellbeing.

Psalm 1:2 describes as blessed the person whose “delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night”. Daily Scripture reading builds intimacy with God.

As President Theodore Roosevelt once said, “A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education.” Even so, the Bible is more than an education of the mind — it is also an education of the spirit and soul.

8. Reading the Bible from Cover-to-Cover Builds Perspective and Wisdom

Reading the Bible from Genesis to Revelation provides a panoramic view of humanity and God’s intervention in history. It brings coherence to Scripture — and to our lives.

This is why the Scriptures say of themselves, “Meditate on these things; give yourself wholly to them…” (1 Timothy 4:15). Reading the Bible from cover to cover helps believers see the big story of Jesus Christ and redemption through His blood.

Contrary to what some may think, the Old Testament is full of God’s grace and love. As D. L. Moody said, “A scarlet thread runs through all the Bible — the whole book points to Christ.”

9. The Bible Offers Comfort and Hope in Hard Times

In the midst of sorrow, loss and uncertainty, the Bible has spoken words of comfort and hope to millions.

Indeed, Psalm 34:18 says, “The LORD is near to the brokenhearted”. The poetic and honest expression of grief and hope found in the Bible resonates with every human being on the planet.

Peter the Apostle speaks of the “exceedingly great and precious promises” that God has given to humanity through Scripture (2 Peter 1:4). These promises truly do bring healing and comfort to the brokenhearted.

10. The Bible Transforms Lives Across Cultures and Eras

Countless testimonies demonstrate that the Bible has changed lives — providing people with reconciliation, forgiveness, courage and purpose. Its impact spans centuries and continents. Martin Luther said, “The Bible is alive, it speaks to me; it has feet, it runs after me; it has hands, it lays hold on me.”

The testimony of Scripture itself agrees: “For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.” (Hebrews 4:12).

D. L. Moody said, “The Bible was not given for our information but for our transformation.” When you read the Bible, it reads you. If you are open to it, God will reveal himself to you and you will never be the same again.

Conclusion

The Bible remains the greatest book in existence because it blends historical depth, moral wisdom, spiritual truth, and profound divine insight in a way no other work does. Billy Graham said, “Let the study of the Bible become central in your life — not just so you will know it, but that you will obey it.”

To read the Bible daily is to encounter guidance and wisdom direct from God without filters. To read it from beginning to end with a prayerful heart is to grasp a unified story that has shaped humanity’s past and present like nothing else has ever done before.

As you read the Bible, you will come face-to-face with Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who was the most influential person in human history.  I guarantee you will be transformed.

The Protestant Bible contains 66 Books, Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Bibles since the Council of Carthage contain 73, plus the Orthodox church has 3 more, while the Ethiopian Orthodox Church has 81. It is considered by its Enemies (of other faiths and by atheist regimes) as the most dangerous book in the world , which is why merely being found by accident in the same room as one, or in possession of one results at best in years of incarceration, or, in some countries –death ! Bibles are then publically burnt. Christians are the most persecuted people (killed ) all over the World, eg in Nigeria , most Muslim countries, North Korea, jailed in China ,etc. I hope the US Congress will force Australia’s e-Safety Commissioner to appear before it as it has ordered her to do in early 2026 ( she is an American citizen ) or the day may come when we will be declared criminals for even owning a Bible which will then be publically burnt. Sound far fetched now, but, our freedoms have been eroded very quickly recently and who knows if you or I will be arrested in future? M/s Inmam Grant is trying to impose Censorship on the whole world by threatening owners of Social Media companies like “X” , etc massive fines if they allow posting of what she considers “Hate Speech ” , etc.
The Bible informs on Right Conduct and preaches a message of Peace, Love and Hope. WHAT is wrong with that and the Truth ? Muslim countries , in particular are frighten that if their people read the Bible, they will lose Control/ Power over them .

Number 1 reason. The Bible is the literal Word of God written by men under the direct influence as instruments of the Holy Spirit.
No other writing can claim this. No other book, writing, anything exists in Christianity other than the Holy Word of God that was written under Direct influence of the Holy Spirit. Its way above being a book. Books are written by men themselves. The Bible is Gods Word.
That is the reason its the greatest full stop.

10 good reasons – well! You’ve convinced me! For the first time I’m doing the McCheyne – so thanks for your article. I guess it’s all about getting into a regular routine.

As a born-again believer I can rest easy in the knowledge that the Bible CONTAINS the word of God. It’s never been inerrant (and certainly isn’t inerrant today with all the different translations).

You mention that the Bible had at least 40 authors, all of them human, all of them prone to mistakes. But that’s fine, we all make mistakes, I even made a few boo-boos when writing Xmas cards this year!

The Bible does not have to be be perfect in order for all your 10 reasons to still count. Bart Ehrman was still a Christian despite discovering so many contradictions and errors in it. And that’s what I like about you encouraging us to read the Bible from cover to cover. For it’s then we see that there’s so many things that don’t add up. But they don’t have to. It’s only a man-made condition that the Bible has to be perfect.

Reading the Bible everyday is enriching and inspiring.

Studying it, even moreso. Not every single verse in the Bible relates to us Australians right now in 2026! We can ignore a lot of us as it doesn’t even apply to us. We can ignore the whole book of Revelation as it is completely irrelevant to us (hence why Luther included in his appendix). As born again, spirit-filled Christians it is all about finding the little morsels that we can in the Bible (and there’s plenty of them!) but understanding that we don’t have to legalistically hang on every word as if every word applies to us today.

The Bible contains the Word of God. And before you suggest otherwise, just as an example, do you obey the verses on slavery in the Bible or ignore them? They were clearly appropriate for that time, but we ignore them today.

Let’s all read the Bible with renewed vigor. And remember, when we find contradictions, inaccuracies and mistakes, that doesn’t mean we lose our faith, just means we can have a laugh with God and go ‘Oh, what was James thinking when he wrote this? Did he not know Paul wrote the complete opposite? Oh he did? Oh haha!

We need to embrace the Bible for what it is, a book of mostly fiction, with errors, contradictions and inaccuracies, but through it God speaks to us.

Congratulations Braden. My wife found the Chronological bible a hard slog in parts compared with the M’Cheyne Bible reading plan because the M’Cheyne has enormous variety. 4 Chapters each day but all from different parts of the bible and the fact the you do twice through the New Testament and Psalms gives a beautiful balance as otherwise the Old Testament overpowers the new. Having said that you will gain a fresh perspective from the Chronological bible and fresh wisdom in the process. You will never regret your decision.

Countess Antonia Scrivanich you are 100% correct . The Bible is the greatest single source of freedom the world has ever known. We could easily have an article with 100 reasons the Bible is the greatest book in the world.

Jon yes you are right in what you say in your comment.. The main reason the Bible is the greatest book in the world is that it is the word of God. Jesus said in Matthew 4:4, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”

Col have a great time reading the whole bible through in one year. Yes their are seeming errors but on closer examination they often disappear. Interestingly the four gospels from a legal point of view in a Court of law are regarded as legal testimony as every witness remembers the same things differently but the main points are corroborated four times. The bible is not fiction but mostly history and corroborated history at that. Watch this video about 9 Discoveries that Confirm the Bible: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQd-fdpq9mk
    Happy reading Col!!!!

    Col,
You say in regard to slavery:

“The Bible contains the Word of God. And before you suggest otherwise, just as an example, do you obey the verses on slavery in the Bible or ignore them? They were clearly appropriate for that time, but we ignore them today.”
In the New Testament 1Timothy1 verses 9 and 10 it says slave traders are lawbreakers, ungodly like those who kill their fathers and mothers etc .

    Hi Graham

I tend to interpret 1 Tim 1:10 as allowing and even condoning slave ownership and the buying and selling of slaves.

In some English translations we have the phrase ‘slave traders’ listed among the ungodly and sinful.

The Greek word for “slave traders” is ἀνδραποδισταῖς (andrapodistais), a term meaning “manstealers” or “kidnappers”.

I’d suggest this verse is condemning those who kidnap people into slavery, while at the same time protecting the very institution of legalised slavery, because kidnapping people undermines that very institution.

    But that’s just my take.
