LNP senators against hate speech laws

Key LNP Senators Line Up to Block Albanese’s Horrendous “Hate Speech” Laws

16 January 2026

3.5 MINS

Senior Coalition and crossbench figures revolt against Labor’s “hate speech” bill, warning vague, unnecessary laws threaten free speech, constitutional rights, and religious liberty.

LNP Senators Alex Antic and Matt Canavan will not back the Labor Party’s Combatting Antisemitism, Hate and Extremism “hate speech” legislation.

The two veteran senators who opposed COVID totalitarianism have similarly condemned the “hate speech” proposals as a mockery of Australia’s democracy.

Marking a big difference between their pro-life, liberty and livelihood dissent and this time around, the two Senators are not alone.

As Caldron Pool highlighted, Antic and Canavan are flanked by a rising tide of voices speaking against Canberra’s soulless obsession with cancel culture.

One Nation’s Pauline Hanson and Malcolm Roberts, along with the LNP’s Jacinta Nampijinpa Price and Andrew Hastie, will all vote against the bill.

Alternative Proposal

For their part, Antic, Canavan, Price and Hastie have made a clear break with other Liberals like Senator Jonathon Duniam and Opposition leader Sussan Ley.

Duniam told Sky News, “The Liberals want ‘hate speech’ laws and want to get them done right.”

Outside this, the party would not “stand in the way.”

Sussan Ley said, as it stands, the LNP would oppose the bill.

“It’s unsalvageable,” she told a press conference.

Ley will be submitting her own version of “hate speech” legislation instead.

Also speaking to Sky, Senator Antic said he had,

“Absolutely no intention, regardless of the position adopted by the coalition, of supporting the bill and all of the hate crime stuff that goes with it.”

“I’m concerned about the slippery slope,” he added.

The proposed law “opens up new categories of crimes. It gives the ASIO director the ability to recommend that certain groups be designated as hate crime groups.”

“What this leads to is anyone’s guess,” Antic argued.

“Once the doors are opened here, it becomes a very difficult precedent for freedoms in this country, especially free speech.”

“I just don’t support any of it,” Antic said.

“These laws largely already exist.”

“The police already have the powers to take action against these sorts of crimes.”

“In most cases,” Antic observed, “none of the things in this bill would have done anything to stop the tragedy of the Bondi attack.”

“So, what are we talking about here? And what is this Prime Minister doing with these laws?”

Unnecessary

Likewise, Senator Matt Canavan took to Facebook, saying he considered the bill to be a Trojan horse.

Canavan smacked down the “hate speech” legislation as “undemocratic, unconstitutional, and so vague that the laws could easily be used to unjustly silence legitimate criticism of government policy.”

“I cannot support these laws,” he declared.

Australia does “not need new laws like this to defeat the radical Islamist extremism. We already have laws against inciting violence. They should be enforced.”

Sharing an article written for Central Queensland Today, Canavan argued,

“Politicians are once again acting under the delusion that we can defeat ideas (even repulsive ones) by criminalising them.”

“Just like the Menzies Government’s attempts in the 1950s to ban the Communist Party, it is the wrong approach.”

“The proposed laws are so vague that a wide variety of legitimate political communication could be banned,” Canavan further remarked.

For example, “My argument against mass migration could easily fall foul of the laws’ (vague, hate crime definitions) because what makes someone ‘intimidated.’”

These law proposals “provide no protections for political communication, which is a right due to all Australians under the Australian Constitution,” he determined.

“The Government’s proposed laws are not about outlawing hate against other persons. They are aimed at outlawing criticism of governments.”

This includes potentially criminalising Christianity.

As was exposed by Queensland LNP Senator Susan McDonald, “Christians would not be protected under Labor’s ‘hate speech’ laws.”

Massive Pitfalls

Christian leaders responding to the legislation included the CEO of Australian Christian Schools, Daniel Pampuch, and Cathy Uechtritz, director of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference.

Pampuch warned that the scope was too broad, saying “Australia can and must confront racial hatred while also preserving freedom of belief, freedom of expression and democratic debate.”

Uechtritz went further, arguing that the law’s religious text exemption was “open to exploitation by bad actors, religious or otherwise”.

The bill “needs to be clearer about objective measures to determine when ordinary speech or religious teaching crosses over into hate speech,” she added.

“We must guard against the erosion of free speech, which is a hallmark of Australia’s cherished liberal democracy.”

Sydney Anglican Bishop Michael Stead reportedly joined some Islamic groups in describing Labor’s “hate speech legislation, as a “minefield of definitions.”

According to The Nightly, he voiced concerns to a hastily put-together parliamentary inquiry about the definition of a “hate crime.”

Here, Stead argued the law could lead to any Christian organisation being listed as a “hate group”.

He then asserted that “the bill placed an ‘unwarranted limitation’ on freedom of thought, conscience and belief.”

Opposed to Labor’s policy on the run, the Bishop said “debate in parliament over the bill should be delayed.”

This, Stead concluded, allowed time for the bill to be “properly scrutinised.”

Good news. There’s just a chance that Albo’s exercise in speech suppression will blow up in his face.
Also, let it be noted that Albo’s announcement coincided with the deadline set by Washington for eJulie to present herself and explain what she’s doing.
That deadline passed Tuesday. If she hasn’t appeared as requested, the US government can move from request to subpoena.

I’m surprised that Ley is going to propose her own legislation. At yesterday’s press conference it would seem her only issue with Labor’s Bill was the fact it didn’t include Islamic extremism. Typical Liberal. Meantime at least these LNP senators have their heads screwed on.

With all these new LNP senators it would seem the LNP could become the official opposition in the Senate. I’m so glad that, according to the article, Antic, Price and Hastie have all joined the LNP, which is great. I didn’t think it was technically possible!

So Jacinta was CLP, then joined the Liberals and is now LNP. That’s wonderful that she’s returned to her conservative roots after being such a traitor and joining the Libs to try and boost her own career. That idea flopped!

Seems it’s time to revive Ian McDonald’s brilliant idea for a separate LNP party room in Canberra.

So, we’re back to division by race and religion. Who will be safe? This goes against our Constitution , which ensures freedom of religion and the state doesnot get mixed up with religion. Because albosleaze is by definition a Catholic (along with Tony Burke), that puts them in the firing line also. Re race :there is only one race- the human race and within that human race there are many peoples. In the sight of God, no one group of these people is better than others. Keep praying…..

I just phoned LNP HQ and they said they have no record of Antic, Price and Hastie joining the party.

I told them about this article and they said it’s probably just a few Liberals having a laugh.

Trouble is, it’s not that funny. If these three are going around pretending to be LNP senators, while still secretly being Liberals, well… that’s all a bit underhanded… some might even say duplicitous.

Matt Canavan needs to invite them to the monkey pod room and sort them out with a clip over the ears.

Kudos to Senators Alex Antic, Pauline Hanson , etc . About 140 pages of legislation and some 400 regulations or explanations to take us into an Orwellian nightmare. NO!NO !NO! By the way , Albanese stopped being a Catholic many years ago when he became a card-carrying member of the Communist Party. When he takes Office he never swears on the Bible. He is not a practising Catholic–does not attend Mass regularly and is a divorced man who married in a civil ceremony.

So now that leaders of all religious faiths (except one) have signed a letter against this bill will anyone in Canberra take notice?

The one faith that didn’t sign the anti-anti-Semitism letter has sadly had a few setbacks over the past few days.

First the victory for freedom at the Adelaide Festival.

Secondly, the announcement by Sussan Ley that the Coalition was not going to support the bill.

Thirdly, the unanimity of all other faiths against this bill.

The one faith that supports this bill is like a little isolated lone duck. Sadly this is the same faith that Daily Declaration has been supporting for the past two years, a faith that denies Christ, but for some reason we’ve been encouraged to pray for them, pray for their land and pray for their victory in Gaza.

Yep CO, the lefty retard wing of the Jewish Council is exactly that, left, far left, and obviously being left is more important to them than protection of freedom.

As for Albo and Burke, neither of these believe in anything. I think this is pretty obvious. And because they believe in nothing, because they cannot even see that there is a huge divide between Islam ( all Islam, not just ‘radical’) and Christianity, that these two cannot co-exist in society, they are frigging clueless. Just look at what they have done to our country. Look at what they allowed Islamic terrorists, living on our soil, to do at Bondi.

Religion should have no place in a democratic state apart from allowing people of “faith” the uninhibited worship of their respective gods in safety, privacy and without government interference.
If one “faith” is selectively favoured by a democratic government, then that government is NOT democratic.
We all can see the rich getting richer and now with the backing of AI propaganda we see one religion always being favoured by the press and by Western governments (AIPAC financed).
Commies don’t need the crutch of religion, like druggies who need a daily fix. If Albo is a communist is that any worse than feral capitalists who allow banks to charge 25% interest on your maxed-out bankcard making everything you buy 25% more expensive on top of the rampant inflation that cannot be blamed on unions any more, just corporate greed.

Antisemitism has surged mainly on account of the horrific killing of 20,000 + innocent children by Zionist forces and the ongoing genocide in Gaza. USA prevents any action to stop the genocide or to give aid.

All religions should be supported equally by a democratic government in laws governing their rights and protection.

Are “God’s chosen people” turning into the “Master Race”? Gaza atrocities indicates that they are.

You need a lesson in the separation of Church and state, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_yS0X5s0lo

As for deaths in Gaza… it’s all on Hamas and Gazans supporting Hamas.

I’ll repast this account… A dear friend Yusuf, not his real name for security reasons, is an Arab Christian Israeli living in Judea, he works with youth and helps people with PTSD due to his psychology qualifications.

We sat with Yusuf in our apartment in Jerusalem while he recounted the following:

Yusuf was born in Israel in an Arab town to Arab Israeli and Gazan parents.
From age 4 till teens Yusuf lived in Gaza, they left in 2005 when Israel withdrew all Jews and handed Gaza over to Arab rule and settled in Israel.
Yusuf’s best friend Damir (again name altered) growing up, also a Christian, was Gazan and could not leave in 2005. Damir married and they had a daughter.
Early in 2024 Hamas setup rocket launchers in the Church and started attacking Israel. Hamas held many of the congregation hostage in the Church while launching rockets.
The Israeli Air Force (IAF) blew up the rocket launching base, the Church and the hostages were killed.
We wept with Yusuf as he shared this horror.

What should have the IAF done? Continued to allow Israel to be attacked?

This is the dilemma Israel faces in dealing with Hamas, PIJ, Hezbollah, Iran, etc. who use civilians and civilian infrastructure to wage war.

It is worth noting that the civilian casualty ratio is 1:1.8 in Gaza vs a 1:9 global average. This is the lowest civilian casualty rate by far for any similar urban conflict.
THIS IS BECAUSE ISRAEL HAS GONE OUT OF ITS WAY TO PROTECT CIVILIANS!

Israel is the only military in the world that drops leaflets, sends text messages, uses “knock bombs,” announces their plan to attack by drones so that civilians can escape. The civilians who try to leave are often shot by Hamas and are included in their count of dead or injured civilians.

Israel is by no means perfect, but are they accountable. E.g. If IDF soldiers do the wrong thing they are punished, i.e. gaoled. They do the best to adhere to basic humanity.

As for deaths in Gaza… it’s all on Hamas and Gazans supporting Hamas.

Really? You can say that with a Christian conscience that the IDF has not been responsible for one single death?

Meantime the nightly news over the past two years has shown they were responsible for thousands.
