Elon Musk and Other Billionaires Edging Towards God

Elon Musk won’t mock God, won’t follow Christ — but he won’t quite let go either. His spiritual journey is one of the most watched in the world.

Speculation shrouds Elon Musk’s journey back to God.

Although he continues to hold Christianity in high regard, he admits to holding Jesus Christ at a distance.

Anglican by virtue of baptism, Musk told Tucker Carlson in 2024 that he “grew up Christian.”

“I went to Sunday school, and maybe this will make me even more enemies, but I have trouble sort of believing all these religious stories.”

“There’s a lot we don’t know,” Musk admitted.

In sum, he declared, at the very least, “I’m culturally Christian.”

A Man Who Won’t Deny God

Notably, Musk has never outrightly mocked, ridiculed or rejected God, even though he considers himself to be non-religious.

Also, with a great degree of care, Musk often skilfully avoids being trapped into publicly denying Christ.

Five times where Musk has affirmed a warm appreciation for the very God and very man from Galilee include:

  1. Telling The Babylon Bee in 2021 that, “There is great wisdom in the teachings of Jesus […] If Jesus is saving people, I wouldn’t stand in His way. Sure, I’ll be saved, why not?”
  2. An interview with Jordan Peterson in 2024, where Musk said, “I agree with the teachings of Jesus.”
  3. Musk asserted on X in 2022 that he “was a fool for not appreciating” the profound wisdom of Jesus’ teaching.
  4. In yet another X post, Musk warned, “Unless there is more bravery to stand up for what is fair and right, Christianity will perish.”
  5. Firing Matthew 7:3-5 at the Pope in 2025 on X, after he criticised Musk’s wealth, saying it “undermined the value of human life, family, and society.”

Open to God, on His Own Terms

More recently, Musk restated his 2024 assertions to Peterson, saying again that he “agreed with the teachings of Jesus.”

The apparent agnostic was replying to a 17 February X post calling for someone to evangelise the SpaceX/Tesla boss.

Musk has also repeatedly either said, shown or shared the fruit of God’s inner working in his life behind the scenes.

He is open to God. Musk just approaches the subject through the lens of a physicist, not a moralist. (See here, here and here.)

It is true that the Starlink creator once stated, “I’m okay with going to hell. Since the vast majority of all humans ever born will be there.”

To which he added, “If that is indeed my destination.”

This is best viewed as an anomaly.

While widely reported, the quote has been wildly misrepresented. Musk’s comments are gallows humour.

The context leads back to a veiled threat from Putin’s cronies because Musk deployed Starlink to Ukraine in 2022.

To that he replied,

“If I die under mysterious circumstances, it’s been nice knowin’ ya.”

Silicon Valley’s Slow Turn Towards the Light

As I noted in February, Silicon Valley is sitting on the verge of something like a big tent revival.

Five other billionaires joining Musk’s slide towards The Light include Dan Cathy, David Green, Phillip Anschutz, Pat Gelsinger, and John Tyson.

According to an AI-generated video by Epic Archive, Christianity plays a big role in the lives of the founders of Chick-fil-A, Hobby Lobby, The Washington Examiner, and Tyson Foods.

The odd duck on Epic’s list is PayPal co-founder, Peter Thiel, a “proud” homosexual who is credited as somewhat of an underground celebrity “Christian” speaker.

Because of that, it’s worth restating:

Big Tech and big businesses’ surge in “Christ-curiousness” (not to be confused with “Christ-consciousness”) is slow-moving, and yet very real.

Musk’s cautious embrace of Christianity, will holding Christ at a distance, gives some guidance here.

“While Theil is definitely not at the centre of the technocratic turn to Christ, his association with some in the movement is fair enough reason for at least a degree of healthy scepticism.” (Read more here.)

    Most interesting, thanks Rod.

I have been praying for Elon’s salvation, on and off, for some years.

Amazing ! Billionaires turning to God , helping people and treating their employees with respect . I sensed some time ago but was pleased to hear Elon Musk state publicaly that he believes in God, the Creator, the wisdom of Jesus’ teachings of Forgiveness, that there is Hope for society, that we should not be afraid to have children.
