Restore the Definitions of Man and Woman
In July last year, I attempted to introduce a Bill into the Senate which would undo amendments made to the Sex Discrimination Act by the Gillard government and restore the original definitions of “man” and “woman”.
My Bill was co-sponsored by now, Nationals Leader Senator Matt Canavan and titled the Sex Discrimination Amendment (Restoring Biological Definitions) Bill 2025.
The Coalition supported the Bill being introduced and debated in the Senate, but Labor and the Greens ensured that the Bill didn’t even reach that stage, so it was not voted on.
You can watch me discuss that Bill in the Senate here:
In 2013, the Gillard government amended the Sex Discrimination Act by replacing the definitions of “man” and “woman” with the concept of “gender identity”, which was in vogue with the left at the time.
A Welcome — If Overdue — Development
You might have seen that on the back of the decision of the Federal Court of Australia in Giggle v Tickle, Angus Taylor has promised that a future Coalition government will amend the Sex Discrimination Act to wind back the 2013 Gillard government changes.
Speaking as someone who has pushed for the Act to be amended for some considerable time, this is a welcome development.
The irony of deleting the concept of “sex” from the Sex Discrimination Act was not lost on people at the time.
The obvious consequences, especially for women and children, were predictable.
However, those who spoke about it in 2013 were shamed and accused of transphobia by those who preach tolerance and fairness.
Well, times have changed. Those empty labels don’t carry the same emotional weight that they used to, and the Australian public are tired of it.
We must always be willing to call a spade a spade and defend common sense. This is a step in the right direction.
It is high time we restore the Act’s original definitions of “man” and “woman”.
