do what you say

Day 19: Do What You Say You’ll Do

19 May 2022

3.5 MINS

Intention

We need political leaders who will do what they say they are going to do.

Scripture

“A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways.” – James 1:8

Reflection

You could say that our nation is on a knife-edge at the moment. This is not only about the election; it’s about our faith: what is it that we believe in?

As with any election campaign, we hear all kinds of policy promises — enticing words intended to tickle our ears — from politicians, but history demands that we treat these promises with a great deal of scepticism. They promise our nation a better future, but will they do what they say they will do?

In our nation, in recent times, there have been numerous political moves that are contrary to the word of God. As a result, we should be encouraged to be on our guard, to stand firm in our faith. We must stand obediently, respecting God’s precepts and keeping the doctrines and convictions laid out in His word.

James writes that the doubting person is “like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.” (James 1:6–8)

A doubter is a double-minded person. Jesus had such a person in mind when He spoke of those who try to serve two masters (Matthew 6:24). That person is always “unstable,”: a Greek word meaning “unsteady, wavering, in both his character and feelings.”

A double-minded person is restless and confused in his thoughts, his actions, and his behaviour. Such a person is always in conflict with himself. One who is torn by such inner conflict can never lean with confidence on God and His gracious promises.

Similarly, the term unstable is analogous to a drunken man unable to walk a straight line — swaying one way, then another. He has no defined direction and, as a result, doesn’t get anywhere. Such a person is “unstable in all he does.”

In these times of uncertainty in our nation, we need political leaders who will do what they say they are going to do.

During the current election campaign, we have again heard so many promises from politicians — ones that we’ve all heard before. Now, where we once believed that if a person said they were going to do something they would do it, we now treat all political promises with cynicism.

My prayer now is, ‘Lord, bring back true integrity and conviction in our National Parliamentary System and Leadership’.

If there was ever a time that we needed national leadership with a clear vision from heaven to lead our nation with integrity and conviction, now is that time.

This is possible. If we, the people of Australia, believe for a government and political leadership that will not be double-minded, that will not waver, that will believe in the promises of God, God will do it for us.

“Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.” – Romans 4:20-21

Prayer

Lord, we pray for the Australian Government and especially for the Federal Election.

We ask that, even now, you would place integrity within the candidates. Give them conviction, so that they will not be double-minded and will ‘do what they say they are going to do’ in leading our nation.

We pray that they will be convicted by the Holy Spirit when they begin to waver and go off track and give false hope to the nation.

Also, give us, the people of Australia, a gentle reminder to pray for our government and those who lead, so we can be the nation you called us to be.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
