Day 18: No Retirement from Loving Christ
Intention
To awaken to a life of discipleship to Jesus, regardless of age, knowing that our older years hold unique gifts for the younger generations.
Scripture
“The righteous thrive like a palm tree and grow like a cedar tree in Lebanon.
Planted in the house of the Lord, they thrive in the courts of our God.
They will still bear fruit in old age, healthy and green, to declare,
‘The Lord is just; he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.’”
– Psalm 92:12–15
Reflection
Our culture often treats ageing as something to resist. Scripture gives us a very different vision.
Every season of life belongs to God, and growing older is not retirement from his purposes.
Jesus calls every disciple to deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow him. There is no age limit on that command. Our later years are not meant to be consumed by self-indulgence, but increasingly given to God and others.
As our bodies weaken, Christ becomes increasingly precious. Wrinkles, grey hair and physical limitations remind us that this world is not our permanent home. God himself is our portion and inheritance. His grace is sufficient, and his power is made perfect in weakness.
Older Christians also possess something the younger generation desperately needs: wisdom gained through years of walking with God. Titus 2:3–5 calls older women to teach what is good and train younger women in godliness. Their failures, repentance, endurance and experience can become gifts to the next generation.
So let us never believe that our usefulness ends with youth. Whether through prayer, encouragement, hospitality, mentoring or faithful service, there is still kingdom work to do.
Age may change our strength, appearance and circumstances, but it never changes our calling to love Christ, serve others and bear fruit for his glory.

Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank you that every season of life has purpose because every season belongs to you. Thank you for the gift of growing older and for the wisdom, experience and testimony that can come through years of walking with Christ.
Help us never to believe that our usefulness ends with youth. When our bodies weaken and our circumstances change, remind us that your grace is sufficient and your power is made perfect in weakness.
Keep our hearts fixed on Jesus. Teach us to deny ourselves, take up our cross and follow him faithfully, whatever our age. Give older Christians opportunities to encourage, mentor, pray for and strengthen the next generation. May their lives testify to your faithfulness and goodness.
Help us receive each day as another opportunity to love Christ, serve others and bear fruit for your kingdom.
May we finish our earthly journey with faithfulness, joy and our eyes firmly fixed on Jesus, our only Saviour and Lord.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayer Points for October 2026
We are praying for the Church to:
- Awaken to her first love for Jesus (Ephesians 5:14; Revelation 2:4).
- Awaken to evangelism so that millions will trust in Christ (John 3:16; Proverbs 11:30).
- Awaken to her prophetic voice to the nation (Isaiah 52:1; Matthew 14:4).
We invite you to support this campaign to multiply prayer in Australia for revival and see millions come to faith in Christ. Every donation to the Canberra Declaration helps us promote prayer and make a stand for family, faith, freedom, life, and the good news of God’s love through Jesus Christ.
