Day 17: A New Generation’s Cry for More
Intention
That a new generation rises up in the spirit of Caleb to ask for more of God.
Scripture
“And Caleb said, ‘I will give my daughter Achsah in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher.’ Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s brother, took it; so Caleb gave his daughter Achsah to him in marriage.
One day when she came to Othniel, she urged him to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, ‘What can I do for you?’
She replied, ‘Do me a special favour. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me also springs of water.’ So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs.”

Reflection
Achsah was a beautiful young woman with a very famous father. She had been raised in the desert in a community filled with longing for better days and a fruitful land.
Achsah ended up being married off to her uncle and inheriting land in the Negev desert. I imagine that when she heard that news, something in her rose up saying, “I didn’t wander around in a desert my whole childhood just to grow up and live in a desert once more. I want more than that. Give me a land that can produce some fruit!”
Achsah knew what to do. Perhaps she had been inspired by the courage of the daughters of Zelophehad, land owners and law changers in her community (Num 27:1–11). Or perhaps she simply had the ability of her father (Caleb) to be able to see much fruit – when others could only see giants.
Either way, Achsah was bold – and knowing she had favour with her father, she asked for a specific part of the land that had upper springs and lower springs. This water would ensure a fruitful future in the promised land of milk and honey.
The younger folk around me – and I am sure around you too – are hungry for more. They want to see fruit. They want to dream big dreams and scale large mountains like Caleb did in his time.
Let’s pray today for our younger generation that they will know they have the favour of their Father and that they (and we) can ask for more.

Prayer
Lord, we thank You for the young people in our cities and towns. Thank You that they are writing stories that they will share with their grandchildren in decades to come. Stories of bravery and boldness and courage.
Lord, we ask You to put it on their hearts to ask for MORE. Let the amens of the older generation rise up to meet with their amens and mingle in the bowls of heaven (Rev 5:8). May Your Church be in unity together for this desire for more. We are one family. One tribe. One generation.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
