Set Yourself to Seek the Lord

Day 26: Set Yourself to Seek the Lord

15 May 2026

2.7 MINS

Focus

72 Hours of Prayer for the USA: 15–18 May

Intention

To set ourselves to seek the Lord in the face of every challenge and calamity.

Scripture

“Then some came and told Jehoshaphat, saying, ‘A great multitude is coming against you from beyond the sea, from Syria, and they are in Hazazon Tamar (which is En Gedi).’ And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.”

– 2 Chronicles 20:2–3

Reflection

Fear is an understandable first response. We are human — God gave us emotions. But notice what the king did next: rather than dwelling in his feelings, rather than gathering others around him for a season of self-pity, he wisely chose to go directly to Almighty God. Facing both personal and national calamity, Jehoshaphat stood in faith and “set himself to seek the Lord.”

The Lord then gave him a powerful strategy: a nationwide fast. During that fast, the king confessed, “We have no power against this great multitude that is coming against us, nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are upon you” (2 Chronicles 20:12).

The Lord then spoke through a priest, announcing: “Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s” (2 Chronicles 20:15). Victory followed.

A similar act of faith in the face of disaster is found in David’s conflict with the Amalekites, when they attacked Ziklag and burned it to the ground (1 Samuel 30:1–6). The devastation was so great that David’s own men spoke of stoning him!

Yet David turned to God: “David strengthened himself in the Lord his God” (1 Samuel 30:6). This same call to be strengthened is also fundamental to Joshua’s commissioning as he prepared to lead Israel into the promised land: “Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9).

You and I need that same faith — that same turning to God — every day in these end times. The Lord is shaking everything that can be shaken, so that what cannot be shaken may remain (Hebrews 12:27).

Prayer

Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus — the name above all names — increase our faith to call upon you in the face of every disaster. We honour you as Almighty God, the source of all wisdom and the one who strategically leads us forward as your children.

Thank you for your Word, which teaches and encourages us. May faith grow so strong in us, and may your love so fill us, that those who do not yet know you are drawn into your kingdom. We give you all the glory!

In Jesus’ name, amen.
