A Call to Pray for Incoming President Trump — And the Trump-Jehu Connection

3 January 2025

8.3 MINS

The parallels between President-elect Donald Trump and Jehu from the Old Testament should motivate us to pray for Trump, America, and the revival and reformation of the Western world.

Every morning, my wife and I take communion before we start our day. We start by praying for revival, repentance and reformation for six Western nations and then the world. The second country we pray for each morning, after our home country of Australia, is the United States of America.

As the leading light in the West, the U.S. is in a desperate state of degradation, as are most Western countries in these dark days. There is a saying which is true: “When America sneezes, the rest of the world catches a cold.” So, our passion to pray for America is born in tears, and we believe is the call of God. Yet it is also born out of selfishness — because as goes America, so goes the rest of the world

Our team at the Canberra Declaration has been calling the world to pray and fast for America since 2013. We are not going way and we are not giving up. I was privileged to represent Australia, along with a band of Australian praying women, at the USA Prayer Leaders’ Summit. I also got to take the stage at the Million Women Prayer Event on the 12th of October on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Lou Engle’s Call for Prayer and Fasting for Government Transition

All of this is why my heart was touched when I heard that Lou Engle was calling for 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting up to and beyond the Presidential Inauguration of Trump on the 20th of January, 2025. The prayer call starts on the 1st of January and finishes on the 21st of January. Then I saw that Dutch Sheets was also getting behind this call. This really got my attention.

Who is Dutch Sheets?

Dutch Sheets is an internationally recognised author and founder of Dutch Sheets Ministries and Give Him 15. Having been in ministry for over 45 years, Dutch has pastored, taught in Bible colleges, and preached in many nations. He has written 23 books, some of which have been translated into over 30 languages.

Dutch Sheets wrote an international bestseller called Intercessory Prayer, which has sold over a million copies worldwide. Here is his message supporting this call for 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting for America at this time.

Dutch is a messenger of hope for America, boldly proclaiming that the nation will experience a Third Great Awakening and turn back to her God-given destiny. He labours to equip the church in governmental intercession, challenging believers to passionate prayer for worldwide revival. Dutch has been actively promoting prayer for almost for four decades. This is no small feat.

I have enormous respect for Dutch Sheets. In 2015, my wife and I attended the USA National Prayer Leaders’ Summit in Colorado Springs. Dutch Sheets got up to speak about his new book Appeal to Heaven and the flag of the same name. I immediately began to weep, and I did not stop crying until he stopped speaking over an hour later. This had not happened to me before nor has such a thing happened to me since. Such is the anointing upon our dear brother.

Trump Is Not the Answer for America — Jesus Is

We need to continue to pray for President Trump and his whole team. More importantly, we need to pray for revival, repentance and reformation for America. Trump is not the answer for America, but Jesus Christ is the answer.

Regarding revival and repentancem these subjects are not the domain of presidents and governments but the domain of the church. 2 Chronicles 7:14 does not say “If the President…” But it says, “If my people…”

Having begun reading through the Bible through in one year, I came across the story of Ezra 1:1-3, which says:

In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, to fulfill the word of the LORD spoken through Jeremiah, the LORD stirred the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia to send a proclamation throughout his kingdom and to put it in writing as follows:

“This is what Cyrus king of Persia says:

‘The LORD, the God of heaven, who has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, has appointed me to build a house for Him at Jerusalem in Judah.

Whoever among you belongs to His people, may his God be with him, and may he go to Jerusalem in Judah and build the house of the LORD, the God of Israel; He is the God who is in Jerusalem. 4And let every survivor, wherever he lives, be assisted by the men of that region with silver, gold, goods, and livestock, along with a freewill offering for the house of God in Jerusalem.’ ”

This reminds me of President-elect Donald Trump, who is an enthusiast for Christians, the Bible and Christian values, and yet is not an overt believer himself. Trump strikes me as a rabid heathen who is a God enthusiast. In another article I wrote for the Daily Declaration, I called Trump an honest criminal. Below is Trump endorsing the God Bless the USA Bible (or you can watch a shorter version here).

Many Christians believe Trump could also be likened to King Jehu, who was a rough-and-tumble man, but became a reformer for God’s agenda in Israel. God can use anyone to fulfill His purposes.

Sometimes those who are not bowtie believers, but men schooled in the rough and tumble of life, can be more effective than those inside the fold. Jesus Himself said in Luke 16:8, “The children of this generation are wiser in their own generation than the children of the light.”

The story in 2 Kings 9:1-37 of Jehu being anointed King of Israel under the direction of Elisha is a classic case in point.

The Prophet Anoints a New King

We read in 2 Kings 9:1-37:

Meanwhile, Elisha the prophet had summoned a member of the group of prophets. “Get ready to travel,” he told him, “And take this flask of olive oil with you. Go to Ramoth-Gilead, and find Jehu son of Jehoshaphat, son of Nimshi. Call him into a private room away from his friends and pour the oil over his head. Say to him, ‘This is what the LORD says: I anoint you to be the king over Israel.’ Then open the door and run for your life!”

So the young prophet did as he was told and went to Ramoth-Gilead. When he arrived there, he found Jehu sitting around with the other army officers. “I have a message for you, Commander,” he said.

“For which one of us?” Jehu asked.

“For you, Commander,” he replied.

So, Jehu left the others and went into the house. Then the young prophet poured the oil over Jehu’s head and said, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I anoint you king over the LORD’s people, Israel. You are to destroy the family of Ahab, your master.

In this way, I will avenge the murder of my prophets and all the LORD’s servants who were killed by Jezebel. The entire family of Ahab must be wiped out. I will destroy every one of his male descendants, slave and free alike, anywhere in Israel.

I will destroy the family of Ahab as I destroyed the families of Jeroboam son of Nebat and of Baasha son of Ahijah. Dogs will eat Ahab’s wife Jezebel at the plot of land in Jezreel, and no one will bury her.” Then the young prophet opened the door and ran.

Jehu went back to his fellow officers, and one of them asked him, “What did that madman want? Is everything all right?”

“You know how a man like that babbles on,” Jehu replied.

“You’re hiding something,” they said. “Tell us.”

So, Jehu told them, “He said to me, ‘This is what the LORD says: I have anointed you to be king over Israel.’”

Then they quickly spread out their cloaks on the bare steps and blew the ram’s horn, shouting, “Jehu is king!”

Jehu Kills Joram and Ahaziah

So, Jehu son of Jehoshaphat, son of Nimshi, led a conspiracy against King Joram. (Now Joram had been with the army at Ramoth-Gilead, defending Israel against the forces of King Hazael of Aram. But King Joram was wounded in the fighting and returned to Jezreel to recover from his wounds.)

So, Jehu told the men with him, “If you want me to be king, don’t let anyone leave town and go to Jezreel to report what we have done.”

Then Jehu got into a chariot and rode to Jezreel to find King Joram, who was lying there wounded. King Ahaziah of Judah was there, too, for he had gone to visit him. The watchman on the tower of Jezreel saw Jehu and his company approaching, so he shouted to Joram, “I see a company of troops coming!”

“Send out a rider to ask if they are coming in peace,” King Joram ordered.

So, a horseman went out to meet Jehu and said, “The king wants to know if you are coming in peace.”

Jehu replied, “What do you know about peace? Fall in behind me!”

The watchman called out to the king, “The messenger has met them, but he’s not returning.”

So, the king sent out a second horseman. He rode up to them and said, “The king wants to know if you come in peace.”

Again, Jehu answered, “What do you know about peace? Fall in behind me!”

The watchman exclaimed, “The messenger has met them, but he isn’t returning either! It must be Jehu son of Nimshi, for he’s driving like a madman.”

“Quick! Get my chariot ready!” King Joram commanded.

The Confrontation Between Good and Evil

Then King Joram of Israel and King Ahaziah of Judah rode out in their chariots to meet Jehu. They met him at the plot of land that had belonged to Naboth of Jezreel. King Joram demanded, “Do you come in peace, Jehu?”

Jehu replied, “How can there be peace as long as the idolatry and witchcraft of your mother, Jezebel, are all around us?”

Then King Joram turned the horses around and fled, shouting to King Ahaziah, “Treason, Ahaziah!” But Jehu drew his bow and shot Joram between the shoulders. The arrow pierced his heart, and he sank down dead in his chariot.

Jehu said to Bidkar, his officer, “Throw him into the plot of land that belonged to Naboth of Jezreel. Do you remember when you and I were riding along behind his father, Ahab? The LORD pronounced this message against him: ‘I solemnly swear that I will repay him here on this plot of land, says the LORD, for the murder of Naboth and his sons that I saw yesterday.’ So throw him out on Naboth’s property, just as the LORD said.”

When King Ahaziah of Judah saw what was happening, he fled along the road to Beth-Haggan. Jehu rode after him, shouting, “Shoot him, too!” So they shot Ahaziah in his chariot at the Ascent of Gur, near Ibleam. He was able to go on as far as Megiddo, but he died there. His servants took him by chariot to Jerusalem, where they buried him with his ancestors in the City of David. Ahaziah had become king over Judah in the eleventh year of the reign of Joram son of Ahab.

The Death of Jezebel

When Jezebel, the queen mother, heard that Jehu had come to Jezreel, she painted her eyelids and fixed her hair and sat at a window. When Jehu entered the gate of the palace, she shouted at him, “Have you come in peace, you murderer? You’re just like Zimri, who murdered his master!”

Jehu looked up and saw her at the window and shouted, “Who is on my side?” And two or three eunuchs looked out at him. “Throw her down!” Jehu yelled. So they threw her out the window, and her blood spattered against the wall and on the horses. And Jehu trampled her body under his horses’ hooves.

Then Jehu went into the palace and ate and drank. Afterward he said, “Someone go and bury this cursed woman, for she is the daughter of a king.” But when they went out to bury her, they found only her skull, her feet, and her hands.

When they returned and told Jehu, he stated, “This fulfills the message from the LORD, which he spoke through his servant Elijah from Tishbe: ‘At the plot of land in Jezreel, dogs will eat Jezebel’s body. Her remains will be scattered like dung on the plot of land in Jezreel, so that no one will be able to recognize her.’”

Is Trump a Jehu? God has not told me one way or the other. All I know for sure is that we must pray for our leaders, as outlined in 1 Timothy 2:1-4 by the Apostle Paul. You will have to read the Scriptures yourself, pray, and make up your own mind.

The Old Testament is engrossing once you get into it. I found a much greater understanding of God/Jesus when I began to really study and meditate in it. Whilst there is bloodshed and violence it is in context of the times and you begin to understand why God did some things which are foreign to us in our days now. He, nonetheless, the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. Praise His Holy Name.

Agree the Old Testament is critical for us to understand the New Testament.

Amen! As we’ve witnessed before, what happens in the USA has ramifications in Australia too, so, as we’ve witnessed before, as pray and fast for the USA, we pray for our home, and all the great Southlands of the Holy Spirit! Let us “Get ready to ride the wind of the Spirit, the Fire of God is on us to pray!”

Thank you Ps Warwick for a thought provoking article. Scripture says in Romans 13:1” Let every person be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those that exists are appointed by God. Therefore let us pray for President elect Donald J Trump as Gods appointed leader. While in prayer God let me feel a glimpse of the weight of responsibilities on His shoulders. It is enormous!!!!I sensed Gods heart of compassion and Mercy over President Trump. May the Ecclesia of God uphold him in prayers accordingly. We are accountable before God as Firstly all intercession is for all men especially those who are in authority……

Thank you Warwik for the brilliant article and for drawing the parallels between Jehu and President Trump.
I love the way Jehu trusted God completely. It was also a reminder that God can use any man whom he calls and prepares if they are willing, and Jehu was more than willing to carry out God’s plan to a tee. Jehu didn’t draw back or question the way God was leading him (though he was no doubt stunned by it all) and he accepted the anointing by Elisha the prophet in faith, without question and accepted God’s mandate to wipe out the house of Ahab.
While Jehu’s soldiers were suspicious of Elisha and called him a madman, Jehu in contrast accepted his anointing and call, and immediately went into action…That sounds very much like President Trump in the way he moves ahead. Both men are extremely courageous, quick to see what needs doing, and have a call and passion to wipe out evil and to set things right in their nation and to never delay.
One was under God’s masterplan and the other is doing what he believes is right and just so the Christian voice is restored, and values and foreign powers put in their place…the rest remains to be seen.
May Australia too restore Christian values and justice… I hope and pray President Trump grows in his own personal faith. Meanwhile may God guide him in all he does and restrain any policy not of Him.
