Eyes on Eternity, Purpose in the Present
Intention
When we live with eternity in view, our actions today take on a profoundly deeper purpose.
Scripture
“So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.” — 2 Corinthians 5:9-10
Reflection
I don’t particularly like deadlines, but without them, I wouldn’t have accomplished much in life. If there were no due dates for assignments and no expectations for me to complete anything, I might never have finished school, earned a degree, or reached any meaningful goal. The deadlines weren’t my motivation — they simply kept me on track.
In the same way, knowing we will stand before Christ isn’t meant to make us live in fear. It serves as a reminder of our purpose, which is to please Him. When we live for God, we are free from the shifting values of the world and anchored to something much more certain. In a society that often acts as though no one is watching, we know that God sees all. This accountability doesn’t oppress us — it strengthens us and sharpens our purpose in the present.
C.S. Lewis once wrote, “When you read history you will find that the Christians who did the most for the present world were just those who thought most of the next. It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this one.”
His point was clear: when we live with eternity in mind — knowing that a day of accountability awaits — we find the strength and motivation to live with purpose in the here and now.
Yes, God is our Judge — but He is also much more. He is our Father. If we were only defendants in a courtroom, would we long to spend time with the Judge? Of course not. And yet Paul speaks of his deep desire to be “at home with the Lord.” That’s because in Christ, we are not just subjects of judgment; we are God’s beloved children.
A toddler taking their first steps isn’t met with anger when they stumble — their father rejoices over every attempt. Likewise, as our heavenly Father, God does not frown at our failures; He counts our steps, cheering us on. He is at work in us, maturing us, preparing us for eternity. And on top of all this, He promises to reward the works He has done through us.
Here is a truth that is counterintuitive. We assume that to be effective in this world, we must fix our eyes on this world. Yet, one of the great mysteries of God is that it’s by looking to eternity that we gain the strength, courage, and purpose to make a far greater impact today. When we live in light of the world to come, we can walk with boldness, hope, and the confidence that our choices matter — not just for now, but for eternity.
Prayer
Father, help me to live with eternity in mind. Remind me daily that my choices matter and that my purpose is to please You. Keep my heart focused on the joy of being with You, and strengthen me to walk in faith, hope, and love. Thank You for being not just my Judge, but my loving Father, cheering me on every step of the way. Amen.
