Charlie Kirk Assassination: Outpouring of Tributes from Australian Political, Religious, and Cultural Leaders
In the wake of the horrific assassination of American Christian commentator and activist, Charlie Kirk, a range of Australian political, cultural, and religious leaders have expressed their sorrow and extended their support to the young man’s family as they grieve. Here are some of their tributes.
On 10 September (local time), Christian commentator and founder of Turning Point USA was shot at a rally in Utah. He was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
In the fallout from the tragic news, Australian leaders—including serving and former parliamentarians, religious leaders, journalists, and political commentators—have extended their thoughts and prayers to Kirk’s widow, two children, and to the people of the United States as they reel from the tragic news.
Here are just a few of those tributes.
Political Leaders
Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott took to Facebook to extend his condolences to Kirk’s wife and children, saying he was “mourning” at the news:
“He championed the pursuit of open debate and intellectual freedom in places of education, and did so with great courage. My prayers are for his wife and children at this dire time.” — The Hon. Tony Abbott AC, 28th Prime Minister of Australia
Hon. John Anderson, AC, former Deputy Prime Minister of Australia, added his tribute, calling Charlie a “loving man who devoted his life to civil discourse and conservative thought”.
I’m saddened and appalled at the senseless murder of Charlie Kirk.
He was a loving man who devoted his life to civil discourse and conservative thought.
Please continue to pray for Charlie’s family as they grieve this terrible loss. https://t.co/2euwyM65cw

Several senior members of the federal opposition, including Shadow Home Affairs Minister Andrew Hastie; Deputy Nationals Leader, Kevin Hogan MP; Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Senator Michaelia Cash, and former Shadow Indigenous Affairs Minister, Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price, also paid tribute to the young activist.

Speaking on behalf of the Coalition, Senator Cash condemned the “senseless act of political violence,” and extended support to Kirk’s family and others affected, and to the American nation as a whole:
“It is devastating to learn of the assassination of prominent conservative commentator, Charlie Kirk, at Utah Valley University. The Coalition is abhorred by this senseless act of political violence, in a forum where political ideas and views should be openly debated. Our thoughts are with Charlie Kirk’s family and to all who are affected by this evil act. We also extend our support to our American friends.” — Senator Michaelia Cash, Leader of the Opposition in the Senate
Others from the Coalition, including Senator Matt Canavan (QLD LNP), Senator Leah Blythe (SA LP), and Senator Matt O’Sullivan (WA LP), have echoed similar sentiments.
The South Australian Leader of the Opposition, Vincent Tarzia, wrote that his “thoughts and prayers go to the family and loved ones of Mr Kirk”:
Western Australian MLC and leader of the Australian Christians Party, Maryka Groenewald, posted a short video to Instagram reflecting on the assassination. She urged Christians to “continue to stand with boldness, grace and courage!”

Political Commentators, Journalists, and Religious Leaders
A range of political commentators, activists, and journalists also posted tributes of various kinds to social media.
Sky News host and Director of the Centre for Youth Policy at the Menzies Research Centre, Freya Leach, shared a short video tribute to Kirk’s Christian faith, along with a scripture quotation from 2 Timothy 4:7–8:
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” (2 Timothy 4:7–8)

The same scripture passage was also shared by the Australian Christian Lobby in its official tribute to Kirk, along with the words:
“We are deeply saddened by the news of Charlie Kirk’s death this morning. At just 31, his life was cut short in an act of violence while speaking to students, the very setting where debate and ideas should flourish.
Charlie was known for his boldness in the public square and his determination to raise up a generation willing to enter the contest of ideas. He was unafraid to speak on issues that matter, convinced that truth should be debated and defended openly and without fear. Central to his message was the Gospel of Jesus Christ – the Good News he so often pointed others to, and the foundation of his hope.Challenge. Debate. Robust conversation. These are the markers of a free society – the way good ideas rise, shape culture, and change the world for the better. Violence only silences. Debate strengthens. A nation that allows its citizens to wrestle openly with truth, to discover what is right and expose what is wrong, is a nation that will flourish.
Charlie’s death is a sobering reminder that political violence must never be allowed to replace dialogue. Freedom of speech is not about agreeing with every voice; it is about protecting the space where truth can be spoken, tested, and heard.
We pray for Charlie’s family, his loved ones, and all who are mourning. May God comfort them in their grief.” — Australian Christian Lobby, tribute to Charlie Kirk
The ACL’s New South Wales Director, Joshua Rowe, also posted his personal reflections.
The thoughtful reflections on Charlie Kirk’s legacy from Christian commentators like Stephen McAlpine and Bill Muehlenberg are well worth a read.
The Daily Declaration’s own Senior Editor, Kurt Mahlburg, posted a beautifully written tribute, highlighting how Kirk’s passion for debate stemmed from a hatred for violence: “He believed America’s deep cultural and spiritual problems could be resolved by giving a hearing to even the worst ideas and persuading people with the truth.”
“…Charlie loved the truth. He loved Jesus Christ, who died for his sins and secured him everlasting life. He loved his family. He loved the people with whom he disagreed. And he loved his country enough to dedicate his life to its renewal.
Pray for Charlie’s widow, Erika, and his two young children who will now grow up without a dad.
The blood of martyrs is seed. Today, many Marxists — including in the media — are dancing on Charlie’s grave. But a generation of young men raised on misandry and nihilism have had enough.
They are rediscovering the Christianity of their forebears as the anchor for their personal identity, the means by which their civilisation can be restored, and the source of eternal hope that will outlast this world. Vast hordes of them will now follow in Charlie’s footsteps.
Today is an incredible tragedy. But it’s also a turning point.” — Kurt Mahlburg, Senior Editor, The Daily Declaration
A range of other leaders have also expressed grief at Charlie Kirk’s death, including the former Moderator General of the Presbyterian Church in NSW and author at The Daily Declaration, Rev Mark Powell, Sydney Anglican minister, Rev David Ould, Youth for Christ Australia’s National Director, Paul Joshua (PJ) Bedwell, and Mark Leach, the founder of Never Again is Now, Australia’s leading organisation combatting antisemitism.
As Australia’s Christians mourn the loss of a hero of the faith, may we be inspired to speak fearlessly for truth that he stood for—even when it is not popular.
Vale Charlie Kirk.

They killed him for talking.
They killed him for telling the truth.
They killed him because he wouldn’t back down.
They killed him because he spoke up for you.
They killed him because he spoke up for Israel.
They killed him because he spoke up for Godly/biblical morals.
They killed him because he spoke the truth of the Gospel.
Leftist/woke/progressives/dems/greens did this with their hateful rhetoric.
They called him a fascist.

Look no further than the leftist/woke/progressives/dems/greens!
Charlie Kirk was anti-violence.
“When people stop talking, really bad stuff starts. When marriages stop talking, divorce happens. When civilisations stop talking, civil war ensues. When you stop having a human connection with someone you disagree with, it becomes a lot easier to want to commit violence against that group.
What we as a culture have to get back to is being able to have reasonable disagreement—where violence is not an option.” – Charlie Kirk.
May his memory be a blessing. BDE

This is a Martin Luther King moment for the cause of LIFE, Marriage, Family, Faith, and Freedom. Just as Martin Luther King was remembered for his stand for the truth so also will Charlie Kirk. We honour you dear brother and pray for comfort and protection for your beautiful wife Erika and young son & daughter. Charlie Kirks words of wisdom will live to haunt his executioners. “If you believe in something, you need to have the courage to fight for those ideas – not run away from them or try and silence them.”
Well and truly explained.
A heartbreakingly sad day for us all. We mourn, they celebrate. Heartbreakingly sad.
