Ethan Beer: Australia’s Next Big Thing?

At just 21 years old, Ethan Beer could very well be Australia’s next music export to the world. Having gone through his music ministry apprenticeship fronting for Youth Alive Queensland, Ethan is ready to strike out his own path with new tunes in his back pocket all ready to go.

These past few months have been a whirlwind for Ethan, performing as a guest artist for CMAA’s annual awards night, signing with Australia’s 1606 Management, preparing for Seek Jesus’ Sessions event on October 11 with Tekoa and releasing his latest single and music video for ‘Eyes on You’ which has debuted at number 2 on the national OZ 5 Top Tunes chart.

In the middle of all this, Ethan still found the time to catch up with Aaron Duff from Australian Christian Records to share what’s next.

Well, Ethan, it’s fantastic to get the chance to talk with you. Welcome!

Hello man, I appreciate it.

So let’s get right into it. You’re a young man, a full-on Christian who has been making music for a while. Why do you do what you do? Tell us the whole story.

I was born and raised in a Christian home. My Dad is a pastor and also a massive musician, able to pick up just about any instrument and just shred it. I have three sisters too, and we’re all very musical in my family, so I was always in and around music and even at different family dinners and stuff, we are always singing.

Around 14, I started learning guitar and about music from YouTube. I got really passionate about writing. Writing about what was going on in life at the time, about my different crushes at school and things.

It’s kind of evolved into what I’m doing now. I’m more doing it as a living now, and it’s more of a job, but also it’s just the best job ever. I love it. I love writing music and performing, and doing everything. I’ve just kept going and never stopped with it.

Not only a talented singer, Ethan also produces many of his songs,

You’re still quite a young one, though, right?

I’m 21. I think it’s way too old. When I turned 21, I was like, ‘No, I need to chill out. I’m growing up too fast.’ But, the responsibilities of being an adult now — it’s crazy!

Exactly! But you have been doing this for a long time as well. I did see on Instagram where you were talking about your acting career as well. And so you’ve been in the public space for a while…

I did have a musical theatre stage for a couple years there, and that was a fun little side quest. But now I’m just mainly doing the solo artist thing.

You love your job, and obviously, things have gotten a bit serious now. You’ve had a few songs that are doing quite well, including your current single ‘Eyes for You’, out there at the moment.

Yes,

… and you have done a whole lot of work as a young vocalist with Youth Alive. Tell me what it’s been like working with the Youth Alive crew.

Oh, it’s incredible!

I remember when I was young and in youth group, and it was always like, Youth Alive was the big conference that everyone wanted to be at, and thousands and thousands of youth. I remember being in the front row of the mosh pit and seeing all the guys up on stage and just being like, ‘One day that’s gonna be me!’

That was just burning in me that that’s what I wanted to do. I felt like that was the calling on my life to worship, lead into, and input into the next generation. To now actually be doing that and how that all happened, it was just crazy testimony of God’s goodness. And it’s a complete honour and privilege to be able to write songs for the next generation.

It’s kind of crazy to think when I’m writing music that I know these kids are going to sing when they have actual hard times in their life. And this is stuff (music) that’s actually helping get them through. It’s crazy to think that I almost have a responsibility in a way to put a song into their mouth for the Lord. And, it’s a real honour and privilege. I don’t take it lightly.

So, yes, I love it as well. The whole crew is amazing. We always have so much fun whenever we’re rehearsing or doing anything. It’s the best and I love collaborating with Youth Alive.

Ethan Beer has been a regular feature artist and frontman for Youth Alive Queensland with national hits like 'Left The 99' & 'Where He Goes'.

So are you collaborating with other artists as well? I know you have a gig coming up with Tekoa for Seek Jesus. When is that?

Yes, October 11 in Melbourne, and I’m so keen to be there.

I recently just came back from Nashville, and it was really exciting. I signed my first-ever deal with a label over there, which is awesome. I was able to collaborate with artists that I grew up listening to and a bunch of guys from Hillsong United and Hillsong Young and Free.

We did some writing sessions, and these guys were like my heroes. It was crazy to meet them, and also some guys from Maverick City and Elevation. I was able to meet them all, have writing sessions with them, and become friends with them. It was the coolest thing ever. I love collaborating with people, being able to write for their projects, and being a part of it.

You’re a producer as well, aren’t you?

Yeah, pretty much all of my music I produce myself or closely with somebody else. I love producing as well. That’s another side of music that I just love to be part of.

Ethan has recently returned from Nashville after collaborating with artists from Hillsong, Elevation and Maverick City.

It’s been just a few days since Charlie Kirk was unfortunately assassinated (at the time of this interview), and you put up a very touching video that day. You can see there’s been a huge response among youth in obviously America, but also Australia and much of the English-speaking world.

How did this touch you? And how do you think this might have changed Australia and our young people moving forward?

Obviously, there’s been a big influence, but I think there was a lot happening even before his passing, and this just seemed to have ignited.

I think that it’s a big build-up of a couple of things. Obviously, I don’t know for sure, but I guess it’s only in the last 15 years that we have really had social media the way that it is. And I feel like in the last five years, it’s just ramped up and ramped up. There have been these ideologies and ideas that are just being pushed and shoved onto young people who are scrolling and constantly seeing it every single day.

These young people are searching for fulfilment. They’re searching for identity. They’re searching for something that will satisfy them in a way that nothing else will. And I think that every time they open their phone, they’re seeing a million videos of people telling them what their identity is; people telling them whether they should be getting fulfilled from; where their identity should come from. But it’s just not working, and nothing’s working, so they’re trying this and they’re going to that, and nothing is fulfilling them.

Then there’s Charlie Kirk, who’s this incredible man of God and is unwavering in his message and in the truth of what he’s saying. I feel that because we have outspoken people like that, it’s almost like there’s a comfort in sitting back, in that we don’t have to be the ones to do anything about it.

But I think that when this assassination happened, there was almost this waking up, (and realising) oh, no one else is coming. This is our fight now, too.

I didn’t know Charlie Kirk, but because he’s a brother in Christ, so it felt personal. It felt like I lost a family member. So even in me, it ignited something, and I was very emotional that day. It was a really horrible loss. But I feel like there’s been a waking up. You see it all over social media now. Everybody is like, I’ve never been so bold in my message and in my truth, and how I’m not gonna back down anymore. I’m not gonna be afraid of this.

(Another thing) Bryce Crawford is an incredible, young Christian man. He said that the devil overplayed his hand with this move, and I fully agree with that. I feel like there’s gonna be an uproar of people not backing down anymore because of this, and I think it’s gonna be a really incredible awakening. These young people who are trying to find their identity are gonna look to Jesus for the first time and be like, What is this about? From this, I think they’re going for the first time ever to find fulfilment in Him. Honestly, I think global revival is already starting, to be honest.

Ethan Beer’s latest single ‘Eyes For You’ has debuted at number 2 on the OZ 5 Top Tunes chart.

That’s a good answer, and I really agree that this is a turning point. We can see so many people are coming to church for the first time. I think we’re also finding Christians and Christian artists choosing to be bolder now, choosing not to hide away. So I want to encourage you in that.

So what’s next for Ethan Beer?

Well, at the moment, I’m working on a big body of singles, so I’m just gonna be dropping hopefully one single every five weeks. I can’t confirm yet any features or anything, but I definitely will let you know when I can. I’m very excited for it. I’m always writing music and working on something, and I’m working really hard at the moment — so just keep your eyes peeled! My plan is to try and drop one song every 4 or 5 weeks for the foreseeable future. So I guess we’ll see where it goes.

Ethan, thank you so much for your time today. We wish you all the very best for your career moving forward, and look forward to catching up again with you in person soon!

Thank you.

Ethan plans to drop a new song every 4-5 weeks - so keep posted!

There’s a certain irony that a performer named Beer is on the rise – the very BIG headline on the front on Perth’s Daily Fishwrap aka The West Australian announces that the Generation Z is turning away from alcohol.
Perhaps Ethan Beer is the only beer they’ll indulge in!
