Adelaide mother of six, Nicki Gaylard, is taking legal action against the South Australian government after her 14-year-old daughter attended a school sex ed session containing explicit content, raising broader questions about parental authority and ideological capture in Australian schools.

A landmark legal battle for parental rights looms in South Australia, after an Adelaide mother announced her intention to sue the State government over graphic and explicit sexual content presented to her 14-year-old daughter during a public school sex ed lesson.

The hour-long session, delivered without parental knowledge or consent at Renmark High School last year, included content on bestiality, incest and transgender body modifications, reportedly causing deep distress for the Year 9 girls who were in attendance.

Mother-of-six Nicki Gaylard withdrew all her children from the school immediately following the incident, stating that South Australia’s education system had breached the trust parents place in schools by exposing minors to explicit sexual content.

The presentation was facilitated by external provider Headspace Berri as part of a ‘Respectful Relationships’ program designed to promote “LGBTQIA+ inclusivity and acceptance”.

Explicit Sex Ed Content Raises Alarm

Ms Gaylard’s daughter, Courtney, later recounted that the first slide shown to the students read, “We can see queerly now,” according to News.Com.Au.

The presentation continued by displaying a list of sexual terms, which included “bestiality”. When students inquired about the term, the presenter reportedly stated it meant “having sex with animals,” then added, “Don’t Google it, girls.”

The session also allegedly included references to incest using the terms “sister love” and “brother love”, and included images of “trans bodies” showing surgical scars from double mastectomies, which students reportedly found confronting.

As reported by Sky News, Courtney became so distressed during the presentation that she walked out halfway through, seeking refuge in the school sick bay.

Ms Gaylard collected Courtney early and withdrew all her children from attendance at the school that same day. They have since transitioned to homeschooling, after briefly enrolling in a local Catholic school.

During a recent Sky News interview, Ms Gaylard recounted the distress Courtney experienced after being “educated” about incest: “My daughter comes home and feels uncomfortable hugging her brother because she’s confused [by the presentation].”

The impending District Court lawsuit is being funded by the faith-based legal organisation, Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) International, which has described the case as a national test for parental rights.

Headspace Refuses Access to Content

Following the incident, Ms Gaylard formally requested access to the PowerPoint presentation shown to her daughter, but Headspace Berri has repeatedly refused to release the material.

This refusal, coupled with the explicit nature of the content reported by the students, has intensified Ms Gaylard’s demand for accountability and transparency.

“My daughter’s childhood was shortened through exposure to completely inappropriate material that Headspace won’t even let me see,” Ms Gaylard explained. “How can they be happy to show to children what they are ashamed to show to adults?”

Robert Clarke, Director of Advocacy for ADF International, underscored this point, explaining, “Parents send their children to school expecting an education and them to be kept safe, not exposure to explicit sexual content.”

He added that the breach was fundamental: “No parent should be kept in the dark about what their child is being taught, and no child should be placed in an unsupervised session dealing with adult themes.”

Clarke described Ms Gaylard’s case as emblematic of a wider, disturbing pattern facing Australian families.

“Increasingly, parents are discovering that radical approaches to sex education — often shaped by internationally-developed curricula and promoted by activist groups at the national level — are being quietly rolled out.”

The case, he stressed, is about reaffirming that “parental rights matter, transparency matters, and safeguarding children is not optional.”

Sex Ed Oversight Under Scrutiny

In the wake of the incident, the South Australian Department of Education acknowledged multiple administrative and procedural failures.

A departmental spokesperson confirmed that required vetting processes were not followed, parents were not notified, and no teacher was present in the room — a clear breach of the school’s duty of care.

The Department for Education later suspended the relevant Headspace branch from delivering the ‘Respectful Relationships’ program in South Australian public schools.

“What happened at Renmark High School was not acceptable,” the Department spokesperson confirmed, characterising the session as “an isolated incident”.

South Australian Education Minister Blair Boyer also wrote a letter to Ms Gaylard, apologising for the “unacceptable” presentation. However, the Minister’s letter contained assurances that contradicted claims made by the students.

Minister Boyer asserted: “I am assured that students were not taught about bestiality, but a reference to the historic criminal treatment of gay men was made. I am also assured there was no content related to incest.”

Ms Gaylard described herself as “underwhelmed” by the correspondence, arguing the Minister’s statement carried the implication that her daughter and other girls had not been truthful.

A spokesperson for Minister Boyer later declined to clarify what evidence underpinned those assurances, saying only that “the Minister’s letter still stands.”

Headspace National, which receives federal funding, conducted its own review of the presentation, conceding that aspects of the session were inappropriate for young people, despite the content’s stated intent to “promote LGBTIQA+ inclusivity and acceptance.”

The organisation claims that it has since strengthened guidance to its local centres regarding oversight and presenter vetting.

Global Fight for Childhood Innocence

Lois McLatchie Miller, a senior legal communications officer for ADF International, said the organisation regarded the Renmark allegations as ‘shocking’ and consistent with a pattern taking place across Western nations.

“This case cuts to the heart of a growing international problem,” she explained. “Why should children have their childhood shortened by being exposed to content far beyond their maturity? Parents have the primary right to protect their children and to know exactly what they are being taught.”

Ms McLatchie Miller was recently in Australia supporting Canadian free-speech advocate Chris Elston, known as ‘Billboard Chris.’ As previously reported by the Daily Declaration, Elston successfully challenged a 2024 censorship order from the eSafety Commissioner in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

The order had sought to remove a social media post in which Elston criticised a WHO panel on transgender health guidelines, but the Tribunal ruled the content did not meet legal thresholds for harm or harassment, securing a significant free-speech victory in Australia.

The Daily Declaration reached out to both Headspace Berri and the South Australian Department for Education for comment.
