From PNG to the Pacific, Here’s How a Revived Church is Storming the Gates of Hell
A powerful wave of Gospel unity is rising across the South Pacific, as churches join forces for revival, discipleship, and Christ-centred nation building—sparking fresh hope for spiritual awakening across the region.
The Church in the South Pacific is storming the gates of hell.
From an annual Bible Month to 2025’s first inaugural General Assembly of Evangelicals, all of this equals ground taken for revival, reformation, and repentance.
Add to this Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Samoa’s embrace of Christ-centred nation building, it’s fair to state that God is on the move.
“Now is the time for the church to rise, walk together, and fulfil its calling,” organisers declared.
A Historic Gathering of Gospel Unity
Eleven nations participated in the South Pacific Evangelical Alliance General Assembly (SPEA) hosted in PNG last year.
According to the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA), the “landmark gathering of faith and unity” was founded by churches in Australia, PNG and New Zealand, for the purpose of mobilising the Gospel.
Dubbed “historic” by the World Evangelical Alliance, the March event, which ran from 25 to 28 March, “emphasised both discipleship and evangelism.”
PNG’s key role was timed to coincide with the country’s legislators “moving to declare Papua New Guinea a Christian nation.”
Rachel Afeaki, SPEA’s general secretary, said, “that the country putting up their hand to host the first event was a blessing.”
Tonga, Vanuatu, the Marshall Islands, and Fiji were among the eleven nations represented. Visitors also came from America, Germany and South Korea.
Pacific Nations Embrace Christ-Centred Leadership
Three substantial sub-themes dominated the assembly.
“Delegates were inspired to actively engage in sharing their faith, strengthening their communities, and fostering unity among different Christian traditions.”
Such as “equipping” youth leaders with the appropriate training and tools “to deepen their relationship with God and spread the Gospel beyond denominational lines.”
Cheering last year’s event as a success, WEA said, the assembly had achieved the first big step in its mission.
Those gathered returned home with a “renewed sense of purpose, unity, and collaboration.”
“Looking ahead,” SPEA hopes to build a greater “shared commitment among South Pacific Island nations to work together and advance God’s Kingdom, ensuring that the Gospel reaches every person by 2033.”
Equipping the Church for Regional Revival
SPEA’s mission is as culturally defiant as it is culturally redefining.
This means defying the spirit of the age, not deifying it.
In order to achieve this, SPEA’s goals are simple: walk with diligence through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit, in discipleship, “love, unity and a deep passion for Christ.”
Their purpose is just as clear:
Be a “platform for regional identity, voice, and partnership for the advancement of the Kingdom of God through a Christ-centred proclamation of the Gospel.”
This, SPEA affirmed, is in the hope that the movement will “foster unity across all spheres of society, transforming and redeeming them for the betterment of our region.”
A Rising Movement Australia Can’t Ignore
SPEA are asking people to pray for them.
Their prayer points include praying for the partnership between Australia and New Zealand to continue to flourish in its support of small island nations.
Second, for an improvement in the ability of teams to provide cohesive support to “island nation health systems and essential workforce sectors.”
Lastly, for “Godly leadership to overflow and wisdom to prevail with our government leaders to protect our Pacific Island region and its Pacific Nations.”
Alongside Bible Month, whose theme last year was Substance Abuse and Scripture, this “I am unashamed of the Gospel” approach from the Pacific Islands raises the bar for Australia’s churches.
This is a tangible, rising Jesus movement in the Pacific that could turn into an awakening that floods a spiritually dead Australian continent.

Australia still has a blasphemy law architecture that goes by a new name — namely, our vilification and anti-discrimination framework. These laws have striking parallels to Australia’s old blasphemy laws, with the exception that they serve a new god and are more readily enforced than the old ones.

Great story and well written!!!!!
“Pacific” = peaceful in character or intent.
Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, is the epitome of this.
Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ – Romans 5:1.
Thank you Rod. The coverage of this conference is so inspiring for all of us .May declaration that PNG is a Christian nation be precedent for many more in the Pacific. May Australia take heed and return to it’s Christian roots. Praise God for the strong ties between NZ and Australia and the islands too. May Gods angels encamp around and unite us all in the world of God and by His Spirit as we look to Him in a volatile world where Christ’s Light shines through the darkness. Amen
Sorry- a correction. ‘May Gods’ angels encamp around and unite us all in the Word of God’ was the intended meaning (Last sentence))
