Cross Before Celebrity: Hannah Harper’s American Idol Triumph
Christian singer, wife and mother of three Hannah Harper stunned audiences by winning American Idol, using her growing platform to share her faith, family values and original music.
This year’s American Idol winner is a 26-year-old Christian musician, wife and stay-at-home mum of three.
Hannah Harper’s (Hannah Noelle Mendenhall) win makes her the first female country artist since Carrie Underwood to be handed the AI crown.
Down-to-earth, Harper made the unique decision to ditch the Hollywood fanfare and instead celebrate the outcome at home.
A God-Given Journey to the Idol Stage
Springing from a bluegrass family band, Harper, already an established performer, is no stranger to the music world.
Although her stated dream in life was to be a stay-at-home mum, she said putting a shot at earning the winner’s spotlight was God-directed.
Winning is brand exposure for the experienced performer, more than it is new talent exploding onto a well-worn stage.
What took her from America’s heartland to American Idol was a song written while she was struggling with post-partum depression.
Called “String Cheese” and labelled a “heartfelt tribute to motherhood”, this is the song that helped Harper win.
Trusting in God, she went all in and used the original song for her audition performance.
The rest is self-evident. All three judges, including Underwood, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, loved the pitch.
Talking about the 2026 competition, Harper shared with The Christian Post’s entertainment editor, Leah Klett, in April that American Idol was another opportunity to platform the Gospel.
“It means everything to me. I’ve told everyone before that I’ve been in ministry since I was 9 years old.”
“Having a platform at this level and getting to still be able to be this open about my relationship with the Lord is like an incredible honour.”
Harper told Klett that she has had to rely on her faith daily.
Thankfully, that involved a Bible study every morning with other Season 24 cast competitors Kyndal Inskeep and Genevieve Heyward.
“The entire competition in itself,” Harper added, “is scary and there’s lots of spiritual warfare in Los Angeles. We’re both like sponges when it comes to all of that.”
“We feel all of it. So, it’s been really nice to have somebody like-minded in that sense to be able to share these moments with me.”
Heyward not moving forward cut the Bible Study down to a duo.
Talking about Inskeep staying on, Harper said, “It was great to still have somebody to fight the battle alongside.”
Faith at the Centre of Fame
On Harper’s upbringing and family, The Bluegrass Standard recalled a tight-knit home built on music, ministry and the mum-life.
It’s the uniqueness of the latter that’s made the Idol winner the real deal.
Recruiters for the series caught onto her stay-at-home social media content.
After initially dismissing their approach as a joke, and a few Zoom calls later, Harper was heading to Hollywood, along with the prayer: “Lord, don’t let me tread on ground not appointed for my feet.”
According to The Standard, Harper said even just participating as a contestant has opened doors.
“The show has definitely changed my life,” she shared.
“So many doors for opportunities have opened. I’m doing things I’ve never done before, like singing in front of vocal coaches and getting feedback. It’s a learning curve, and I’m grateful for it.”
Now it’s dad (Hannah’s husband, Devon) who gets to stay at home.
“This is something I want to do,” Harper stated, “because I want the opportunity to give my boys the kind of life I had growing up, but in a bigger way. I want to sustain my family and do music full-time.”
Congratulations for the win stretched far and wide.
Harper’s Birch Tree First Baptist church marked the win with a simple Facebook post stating,
“Hannah, we are so proud of you for standing firm in your faith during your American Idol journey.”
“What a blessing it has been to be a part of your life. We have prayed for you for months and will continue to pray for you.”
To this, her home church added,
“We have always known God has big plans for you. (Jeremiah 29:11) We are excited to see you go into this next season. We love you, Devon, the boys and your family.”
Impressed by her final performance using Chris Tomlin’s “At the Cross”, Franklin Graham stated, “It was a powerful moment.”
“I pray this young mother of three from Missouri will continue to use her music to point people to Jesus Christ—our only Hope!”
Live Action’s Lila Rose also commented.
On X, she wrote,
“Hannah Harper is a mom of 3 who went on American Idol to sing a song she wrote during postpartum depression—leaving Carrie Underwood in tears.”
“Nearly 1 in 7 mothers experience postpartum depression, yet many suffer in silence,” Rose explained.
“Every mother,” she added, “deserves to be seen and loved, and Hannah beautifully did just that.”
LoorTV’s CEO Marcus Pitman applauded Harper’s and Hollywood’s newfound Biblical bravery.
In effect, Pitman suggested that someone needed to take Hollywood’s temperature.
“American Idol‘s dramatic shift from Pop to Country and Gospel music needs to be studied,” he quipped.
“Hannah Harper singing At the Cross by Chris Tomlin as her victory song is crazy.”
“Jordan McCullough ending with Gospel. Incredible to see leftists in Hollywood realising what time it is.”
The story doesn’t end there.
As per Harper’s Instagram account and Country Rebel, her first reported post-win purchase was to rent a touring bus, fit for the entire family.
Dubbed the “String Cheese Tour”, the family of musicians has already backed her in some performances.
True to her stated goals about giving her children the same upbringing, just on a grander scale, Devon and Hannah’s 3 boys will also be along for the ride.
