Day 27: Desperate for Worship
Intention
The world desperately needs your worship
Scripture
“But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were loosed. And the keeper of the prison, awaking from sleep and seeing the prison doors open, supposing the prisoners had fled, drew his sword and was about to kill himself. But Paul called with a loud voice, saying, “Do yourself no harm, for we are all here.” Then he called for a light, ran in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. And he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.” Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes. And immediately he and all his family were baptized. Now when he had brought them into his house, he set food before them; and he rejoiced, having believed in God with all his household.” – Acts 16:25-31
Reflection
I absolutely love this account in the book of Acts where Paul and Silas find themselves chained and in prison, and we can see the incredible impact that worship has not only for the worshipper but those around them.
From this short account, I see so much about the power of worship and how the world is in desperate need for worshippers to rise up.
This is what I see:
- Praise affected the natural world
As Paul and Silas praised there was an earthquake. God miraculously came on the scene and shook the physical landscape. There is no doubt that this was felt by more than just those in the jail. Just like He did at Jericho, I believe God can shake things in the natural by what happens with our praise in the supernatural.
- Everyone’s chains fell off.
It wasn’t only the chains of Paul & Silas that fell off. EVERYONE’s chain fell off! Not everyone in the prison were active participants in the worship, but freedom came to them ALL. Those around you who are in chains and bondage desperately need the freedom that is released through your worship.
- Doors were opened
Just as the prison doors were opened, your worship opens doors of freedom and possibility. Be encouraged… You open doors with your worship not only for you but those around you to walk through!
- Your worship brings favour with Man
In this account, the jailor, who was responsible for holding them in bondage, became a servant to them. Your worship places you in a place of favour with those who would have sought to persecute you. It is a place of favour in the eyes of God, and, therefore, in the eyes of man.
- Your worship brings salvation to generations.
In verse 33, we see that the entire jailer’s family was saved and baptised. Your worship releases restoration and salvation to those around you that will flow to generations.
Your worship has such an impact – more than you probably realise – and the world is counting on you to step out in boldness and worship.
Rise up you worship warriors!
Prayer
Heavenly Father, we give you all the praise, all of our worship and all of our devotion.
We know that there is no problem too hard, no army too large, no plague or law that is too difficult for the Lord of heaven’s armies. We fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, and we thank you for the cross.
We declare that there is no substance in the world more powerful than the blood of Jesus, and we plead the blood right now over our nation, over our governments, over families, and over every church. We are so grateful for Jesus.
Thank you for His complete victory over sin, sickness and the devil. We receive your healing right now in our bodies, in our families and in our land. Bless the Lord, O my soul and all that is within me!
For our praise is a mighty weapon to demolish strongholds. We choose to thank you, trust you, worship and obey for we know that You alone are good, and Your mercy endures forever.
In Jesus’ precious Name we pray,
Amen.

Hi Joshua, totally enjoyed reading your devotional. Loved the clear cut points, easy to follow and agree with you wholeheartedly about the dynamic change that worship brings. Thank you Joshua. Blessings and shalom, Nel Farnik.
It is humbling to ponder the brokenness of Paul and Silas beaten and wounded, chained in a dark prison who purposed to worship through their pain and tears. Such worship pierces darkness and moves the heart of God. Thank you Joshua for sharing the heart of Worship.
