Call to Prayer
Another news report warned of major disruptions to city traffic in cities around the country in the name of demanding climate change action. As a farmer’s wife dealing with the effects of our current drought, my only thought was that they would do a lot more good praying for rain instead of making useless demands.
Then God whispered, I’ve seen this all before.
“Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Since you are so numerous, choose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first. Then call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire. And they took the bull that was given them, prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon, shouting, “O Baal, answer us!” But there was no sound, and no one answered as they leaped around the altar they had made. At noon Elijah began to taunt them, saying, “Shout louder, for he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or occupied, or on a journey. Perhaps he is sleeping and must be awakened!” So, they shouted louder and cut themselves with knives and lances, as was their custom, until the blood gushed over them.”
~ 1 Kings 18:25-28
He was right! Yes, the name of Baal has been changed to Climate Change, but the passions and the results are the same. Their Climate Change god cannot hear them or give them what they want.
The day of this event began with the people of Israel being gathered together in one place.
“So, Ahab summoned all the Israelites and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel. Then Elijah approached all the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him. But if Baal is God, follow him.”
~ 1 Kings 18: 20-21
While I know that Australia is not the new Israel, I was reminded recently we are serving the same God. God doesn’t change; He may have changed the way we are able to approach Him, but not His love, care and justice.
God’s people here are devoting the month of October to fast and pray for rain across the whole of Australia, particularly to the drought-affected parts of New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia. But at the end of this month will there be a gathering of Christians, being seen and heard?
Prayer:
God, You are a God of justice and love. You want nothing more than for all of us in Australia to love and honour You. During this month of prayer, may we hear Your voice, repent of our sins and honour You, so those around You will know that You are the real Creator God of the universe.
