Day of Pentecost

Intention

To know that God is doing something new and roll up our sleeves, put our hands to the plough and get involved.

Scripture

Remember not the former things,
nor consider the things of old.
Behold, I am doing a new thing;
now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness
and rivers in the desert.”

– Isaiah 43:18–19 (ESV)

From Issachar, men who understood the times and knew what Israel should do.”

– 1 Chronicles 12:32 (NIV)

Reflection

What a great day we had yesterday in the presence of God celebrating the National Day of Prayer. What a wonderful day praying for our local communities, churches and the nation.

The Scripture says Psalm 16:11, “In your presence there is fullness of joy.”

I coordinated the Wollongong National Day of Prayer with my good friend Hengki Widjaja. When you spend six hours in the presence of God, like many of us did yesterday, it will change you forever.

As Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 3:18, “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.”

Last weekend’s 72 hours of Prayer, Praise and Worship for America was also spectacular. Kym Farnik and I hosted USA72AusPray with people coming in to pray from all over the world.

Collectively I calculate I spent 20 hours in the presence of God in prayer and worship over that four-day period. Another life-changing experience for me and many others. Many people shared stories of massive transformation.

Amazing things have been happening over the last few weeks. As I often say, “Coincidences happen when people pray.”

Here are some highlights of possible answered prayers.

  • Over the last 44 days people have prayed every night on Zoom.
  • 35 amazing devotions have reached over 100,000 people worldwide through social media, email, and web platforms.
  • USA72AusPray – 72 hours of prayer & worship was a great success last weekend. Watch speaker Mike Johnson rededicate America to God in this YouTube video.
  • The polls continue to shake up the political world. Perhaps God is shaking the political system here in Australia?
  • The opposition leader Angus Taylor announced in the middle of USA72AusPray that a woman is a woman and a man is a man. We have been waiting for ten years. Soli Deo Gloria!
  • Record number of over 110 known National Day of Prayer celebrations yesterday here in Australia. Many more unknown.
  • Many people coming to Christ.

These are just some of the possible answers to our prayers over the last 44 days. We believe there are tens of thousands more, “above all we can ask or think.” Thank you for your prayers.

God is doing a new thing. Let’s all recognise the times and get involved!

Prayer

Here is the beautiful prayer of dedication that was prayed by thousands of Christians all over Australia at the end of the National Day of Prayer yesterday.

Gracious Father,

As your people once stood at the edge of the Jordan, so we stand before you now as churches and communities across Australia.

We lift our eyes to Jesus and choose again to follow where he leads.

As Joshua called the people to follow the ark of the covenant, so we choose to follow your presence, trusting that you are leading us into a new day and a fresh work of your Spirit.

Today we consecrate ourselves afresh before you.

As it is written, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will do amazing things among you” (Joshua 3:5).

In view of your mercy, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to you.

Renew our minds.

Transform our hearts.

Shape us together as one body in Christ, brothers and sisters belonging to you and one another in love and humility.

As we prepare for Pentecost Sunday, pour out your Holy Spirit afresh upon your Church across this nation.

Fill us with your love, wisdom, understanding, courage and peace.

Fill your Church with holy love, discernment, and courage.

May the fruit of the Spirit be seen in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

May our love abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that we may discern what is best and bear the fruit of righteousness in everyday life.

Amen.

Thank you Warwick for the great report and the wonderful affirmation that God is doing a new thing. I’m sorry, Warwick, but Angus Taylor is NOT an answer to prayer. Nevertheless, the encouragement to move beyond prayer into the demonstrable action of obeying Christ’s Great Commission is laudable. I pray it will be so. Amen.
