Australian World Cup star Nestory Irankunda has completed a A$24.5 million move to Portuguese giants Sporting CP, continuing a remarkable footballing rise shaped by family, faith and humble beginnings. 

The 20-year-old Socceroos winger joins the Lisbon club from English Championship side Watford, with add-ons potentially taking the value of the deal to about A$29.4 million. 

Irankunda arrived in Lisbon visibly excited about the move, telling reporters he was a “very fast” player as he prepared to begin the latest chapter of his European career. 

It follows a memorable World Cup campaign for the young Australian, who scored in the Socceroos’ opening 2-0 victory over Türkiye and became Australia’s youngest goalscorer at a men’s World Cup. 

From a Refugee Camp to Adelaide

Behind the rapid rise is a family story Irankunda has long credited with shaping both his football and his outlook on life. Born in a refugee camp in Tanzania to Burundian parents, Irankunda was one of eight children before his family eventually settled in Adelaide. 

In a 2023 interview with the A-Leagues, the then-teenager spoke about the influence of his father, Gideon Rurandagaye, whose faith and football provided an early example for his son. 

“My dad is a holy man, he is really into his religion – I want to thank Jesus for the things he does for us,” Irankunda said at the time. 

“My dad would finish church and have a game afterwards and he would take us with him to his game.” 

Irankunda said much of his own footballing ability came from following his father. 

“Most of the talent I had is all because of him, and the food he provides us as well,” he said. 

The father-son football connection was again evident during this year’s World Cup. 

After Irankunda scored against Türkiye, Gideon told the ABC he was immensely proud of his son and recalled teaching him football in parks and at home as a child. 

Irankunda has also previously used social media to acknowledge his Christian faith at significant moments in his career, including posts giving praise to Jesus Christ. 

A Rapid Rise Through the Ranks

His footballing rise has been extraordinary.

After debuting for Adelaide United at 15, Irankunda secured a move to German powerhouse Bayern Munich before later joining Watford and establishing himself as a regular Socceroo. 

His performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup further raised his international profile. 

Sporting have now secured the Australian on a five-year deal, with the Portuguese club reportedly placing a release clause worth around A$130 million in his contract. 

The move also places Irankunda at a club famous for developing Cristiano Ronaldo and gives the young Australian the opportunity to compete for domestic titles and play UEFA Champions League football. 

For a player whose journey began following his father from church to football matches in Adelaide, it marks another remarkable step onto the world stage.
