Albanese’s Social Cohesion Plan is Not Going Well
The Government can’t find a special envoy on Islamophobia, and the special envoy on anti-Semitism is reporting to the wrong person.
Anthony Albanese’s plan to help social cohesion by appointing special envoys on anti-Semitism as well as on Islamophobia is not going well.
In fact, his insistence on balancing the two has only served to highlight the fact that anti-Semitism is a bigger problem than he admits.
As for Islamophobia, well, in a strange twist of irony, his plan is demonstrating that Islamophobia might not be so irrational after all.
Unacceptable
The PM was quick to appoint a special envoy on anti-Semitism. That was the easy part. The Government was spoilt for choice when it came to smart, articulate Jewish community members who could legitimately and authentically speak for peace.
But finding a special envoy on Islamophobia… well, that’s been a bit more of a challenge.
According to a report in The Australian, the PM’s team have — to this point — been unable to find a Muslim leader who is willing to condemn, without equivocation, the October 7 slaughter of Israelis by Hamas.
In other words, so far, all the possible envoys on Islamophobia are too busy marching through our capital cities chanting, “From the river to the sea…” to help with social cohesion.
Awkward.
An envoy on Islamophobia who won’t condemn the October 7 attack is unacceptable to the government.
But an envoy on Islamophobia who will condemn the October 7 attack is unacceptable to the Muslim community
Oh, what a tangled web Handsome Boy weaves when he’s too gutless to exercise moral clarity and so instead pretends…
… some sort of equivalence between anti-Semitism and Islamophobia in this country!
So, don’t hold your breath for a special envoy to speak up for all the Muslims who are fearing for their safety because of the weekly anti-Palestine marches calling for the destruction of Muslims.
Oh wait, there are none. Can someone please tell the PM?
Conflicting
Meanwhile, the special envoy on anti-Semitism is having to report to a Government Minister who, well, doesn’t exactly have the most pro-Jewish record.
Thanks to the recent ministerial reshuffle, anti-Semitism envoy Jillian Segal, must report to Tony Burke.
Four things you should know about the man Anthony Albanese has said the envoy on anti-Semitism must report to:
- Tony Burke supported anti-Israel protests that threatened the well-being of Jewish students on university campuses across the country.
- Tony Burke is on record quoting Hamas casualty figures as if they were fact.
- Tony Burke was a strong supporter of the Canterbury-Bankstown Council’s decision to fly the Palestinian flag right after the October 7 massacre of Israelis
- Tony Burke is highly motivated to keep Muslims happy since almost 20 per cent of his electorate are Muslims, and they are threatening to vote against him at the next election.
I’m not suggesting Tony Burke is anti-Semitic, but you do have to wonder how confident Jews would be in getting a fair hearing from the member for Watson in Sydney’s southwest.
Surely, this brings into question the PM’s sincerity when it comes to talking anti-Semitism.
How seriously does Albanese take the issue when he allows this kind of arrangement?
Self-Interest
To make matters worse, it’s reported that most people, including Jillian Segal’s supporters, aren’t exactly sure what she is supposed to be doing.
Well, if you ask me, it’s pretty clear what the job is.
Albanese doesn’t want to do anything about anti-Semitism. But nor does Albanese want to be criticised for not doing anything about anti-Semitism.
So, he has appointed a special envoy on anti-Semitism, which allows him to say he has done something while having done nothing.
The role was never designed to stop attacks on Jews. It was designed to stop criticism of the Prime Minister.
Which is a pretty cynical way to treat our Jewish community, especially when they are already vulnerable.
What a disgrace.

Thank you James. Your incredible insights have been driven home with such humor – but we still can feel the underlying pain of those being targeted by pro Palestinian supporters.
We hoped for an active anti Semitic adviser who could speak out to support the Jewish people and to outline all the unacceptable things happening in Australia. We hoped he/she might be given a voice to enable Jewish people to feel vindicated and cared for and protected. We hoped an anti semitic ‘ambassador’ could help restore Australia to being a country of peace- not a hotbed of unrest for Muslim extremists or those who chant daily or weekly at rallies, or who encamp at Universities or outside the MP’s offices.
It would be wonderful if the new ant semitic envoy could speak to a Justice committee (and later on the news and to the press) about cases of anti Semitism and discrimination, so the public learns how much the Jewish families and children have already suffered.
What a tragedy that Tony Burke as Immigration minister is the one to hear reports from Jill Segal- when he is already trying to appease the 20% of Muslims in his own electorate.
Very sadly a gate has been opened to allow Anti Semitism to reign in Australia- and the horse has bolted…The horse has no intention of stopping. The Prime Minister has not used any of the laws we have to curb this revolt. The Police have tried their best to keep peace but much power has been taken from their hands. As a consequence Anti Semitism is rife and the wrong person is hearing about it due to our Prime Minister choosing the wrong person to report to….it is beyond criminal. May God forgive such negligence and set things right in our land.
I long to see Albanese, (or his replacement at the next election) get real about the protection of our Jewish community by outright condemnation of the hateful speech from the outspoken anti Israeli groups in the Muslim community. There should have been arrests and charges from the first lot of protests by Muslim ‘extremists’ calling to “gas the Jews” among other hateful speech against Israel. Believers in this land have a duty to be more active against the hatred that is espoused by Islam – sign petitions, attend NAIN rallies, write to MPs, etc., but most of all PRAY. If we do not, we will face the problems the UK is dealing with now.
Good comment Mac.
