Life is a Camping Trip — Our True Home Awaits
Intention
This world is not our home. Our ultimate comfort, joy, and rest are found in eternity with Christ.
Scripture
“For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.” — 2 Corinthians 5:1-5
Reflection
I love camping — long hiking trips especially. Some people think that’s crazy. Why would anyone choose to get dirty, sweaty and sunburnt, and sleep uncomfortably night after night? But for me, and many others, the beauty of the scenery, the fresh air, the sounds of nature, and the break from the business of modern life make every camping trip worthwhile.
But there’s another reason I love camping: that first shower when I get back home. Add to that the feel of carpet under my bare feet, freshly washed clothes on my back, and a soft mattress under my sore, tired body. Being deprived of these things makes the return home all the more enjoyable.
Life on earth is a lot like camping. If you have put your faith in Jesus Christ, you’re on a temporary journey through this world — you’re not home yet. Scripture calls us strangers and exiles on this earth (1 Peter 2:11). Heaven is our true home, and the joy and rest we’ll experience there will be infinitely better than returning from a camping trip.
Maybe you’ve had an uncomfortable week. Maybe life feels like rough terrain right now. Whatever difficulties you’re facing, don’t despair. Look up instead — your best days are ahead.
In fact, for Christians, life’s hardships are the worst they will ever face because they have the hope of eternal joy and peace with Christ. But for those who don’t know Jesus, this life is the best they will ever have — without faith in Him, there is no promise of anything greater, safer, or more fulfilling beyond this world.
Much like camping sharpens our longing for home, life’s struggles point us to the eternal significance of our soul. Don’t forget that the real you isn’t just your body. Modern science often reduces us to biochemical machines, treating humans as mere resources to be used rather than priceless souls made in God’s image. This reductionist view may explain some of the fear, despair, and emptiness we see around us.
But God reminds us that we are more than the sum of our physical parts. The real you is eternal. Your current body is temporary — one day, it will give way to an indestructible resurrection body. Knowing that we are destined for new bodies and everlasting life with God transforms how we live today, giving us courage, hope and purpose in our daily activities.
If you’re weary from the journey, take heart — home is up ahead, and it will be worth the wait.
Prayer
Father, thank You for reminding me that this world is not my home. When life feels difficult, help me to lift my eyes to the hope of eternity with You. Give me courage to walk this journey with faith, and help me to share the hope of heaven with those around me. Thank You for the promise of new life in Christ. Amen.
