7 Reasons This Former Pastor Became More Politically Outspoken

15 July 2025

10.3 MINS

A former pastor shares why he now speaks more directly about politics, justice and truth — and why staying quiet no longer feels like faithfulness.

Before I stepped into the world of Christian advocacy, I was a pastor in a local church. I look back on my time in ministry with fondness, and I remain an active member of the same church today, even as I serve in a very different role with the Canberra Declaration.

My ministry transition has come with both blessings and challenges. Being an introspective person, I’m keenly aware of the shift in my public messaging — particularly online, where the bulk of my work now takes place. This is especially so when I receive pushback from people who knew me primarily as a pastor.

While I receive far more words of encouragement than I do rebuttal, the disapproval is what I tend to reflect on most. I’ve walked with Jesus long enough to know that criticism is always an opportunity for growth, and that dying to myself and being formed in the image of Christ is a messy, lifelong process.

That said, there is a meaningful distinction between my former and current roles — as well as some key changes in my thinking — that help explain why I now take a more assertive tone when addressing the cultural, political and spiritual issues of the day.

So, for those interested, here’s what’s changed.

1. I’m No Longer a Pastor

The first point is perhaps the most obvious while simultaneously being the hardest for some to adjust to: I’m not a pastor anymore.

Being a local church pastor is one of the hardest jobs in the world, which is why we need to keep praying for and championing our church leaders. One of the toughest tasks? Maintaining unity in a beautifully imperfect group of people who don’t always see eye to eye.

While I was pastoring, unity — both with other staff and among congregants — had to be one of my highest goals. It meant setting aside many of my ideas, priorities and distinctives that weren’t necessarily appreciated in that setting. Others on staff did the same. Like the others, I understood the need for compromise and willingly made that sacrifice.

Today, I have a lot more freedom to speak out on the issues I’m passionate about but that warrant less focussed attention in a local church setting.

To be sure, at the Canberra Declaration, I work with a team made up of vastly different personality types, theological commitments and ministry styles. Unity is still the prize, and I aim to be easy to work with and quick to compromise on things that aren’t mission-critical.

But we are a parachurch ministry with a clear-minded focus: to see Australia renewed by the timeless Christian values that built our nation, like life, faith, family, marriage and freedom. As a result, the majority of what I share in public today revolves around these core convictions.

2. I Saw Australia Become Much Darker

The Israel Folau saga, which unfolded in 2019, was one of the first topics I wrote on for the Canberra Declaration. Less than two years earlier, Australia had legalised same-sex marriage, buoyed by promises from the ‘Yes’ camp that Aussie believers wouldn’t lose their jobs or freedoms if the vote went through.

That’s not how it turned out for Israel Folau.

After Folau paraphrased 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 on Instagram, Rugby Australia tore up his four-year contract just months after he signed it. By the time the league’s major sponsor Qantas (led by openly gay CEO Alan Joyce) had weighed in and the press had enjoyed its feeding frenzy, Folau’s career in Australian rugby was beyond repair.

I watched in disbelief, unaware just how much darker things would soon become. Since then, many more Australians have lost jobs, court cases and life savings for stating what was, until recently, universally accepted as true. What’s more, our society is also:

I didn’t take a stand against these issues when I was pastoring because they hadn’t come up yet. But if you’d shown me a crystal ball and asked my opinion, I would have denounced such obvious moral wrongs without a second thought.

It’s not my convictions that have changed, but Australian society. We are now forcing women and girls to share sports and bathrooms with men, banning Christian counselling, exposing preschoolers to drag queens, and sexualising and even castrating children. And yet — ironically — it’s people like me who are considered extreme for daring to speak about it and voice what was once common sense.

If you’ve found yourself growing silent on these issues — and more irritated by the Christians speaking up — perhaps it’s time for a reframe: It’s not what Christians should believe that’s changed — only the number of people willing to say it out loud.

3. I Realised Language is the Battleground

When I use a phrase like “castrating children”, please understand that my purpose is not to be deliberately provocative. I’m doing my best to speak the truth in love in these perilous days.

So much of the harm that’s been unleashed on young Australians over the last decade has only won acceptance because it’s been dressed up in euphemistic language. A little while ago, when the pronouns push began, I drew a line in the sand and decided I could go along with it no more.

“Gender-affirming care” is nothing of the sort. Puberty blockers chemically stunt kids’ natural growth. Hormone treatments make their muscles, hair and voice resemble those of the opposite sex. As a next step, surgeons remove breasts and carve up genitals. All three of these radical interventions are taking place in Australia and come with major risks, including sterilisation and yes, castration — and very often, a lifetime of regret.

My current role requires me to write about these issues. And as a Christian who is seeking to be led by the Spirit, my conscience no longer allows me to use the labels that actively hide the harm.

Similarly, when it comes to abortion, I avoid — and even critique — labels like “termination of pregnancy”, “reproductive healthcare” and “pro-choice”. These phrases function as propaganda, since they veil the violence that is unleashed against pre-born babies whom God lovingly created in His own image. (If you are reading this and have been impacted by abortion, please know that God’s grace is for you, and that help is available).

My prose might occasionally sound offbeat or “fringe” as a result — but that’s not why I do it. I have made a commitment to the truth, irrespective of whether that truth has been relegated to the fringe of polite society.

I do so anticipating that Australians will one day see abortion and “gender medicine” in the same way we now view lobotomies and bloodletting — as horrific acts of barbarism. And I am willing to forego any praise for my stand until that day arrives.

4. I Rethought Christian Advocacy

While in ministry, I embraced Timothy Keller’s third way approach — also known as “winsomeness” or public Christianity — without much scrutiny.

Simply put, Keller urged Christians not to side with the political left or right, and instead to persuade people gently, find common ground, and follow a “third way” that critiques both sides while offering a better path.

But third-wayism has at least three fatal flaws I couldn’t see at the time.

First, it assumes that political engagement is merely an extension of evangelism, not a force for real change in its own right. However, if we tiptoe around issues like abortion or gender ideology to avoid offending progressive ears, we quickly lose the moral urgency needed to bring about any meaningful change.

William Wilberforce didn’t reduce his fight against slavery to an exercise in winsome evangelism. He confronted one of history’s great evils, battling an overwhelmingly pro-slavery parliament for decades, and making countless enemies along the way. Yet in the end, he won both laws and lives for the Kingdom.

Not all Christians are called to political advocacy like Wilberforce. But throughout history, those who were, and who achieved great things — people like Sojourner Truth, Frederick Douglass, Susan B Anthony, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and Martin Luther King Jr — did so by rejecting winsomeness as a constraint on their advocacy. I now seek to follow their example.

Second, third-wayism imagines a moral equivalence between left and right that doesn’t exist.

While conservatives at times deserve criticism for lacking grace towards immigrants, love for sinners, openness to other cultures, or sympathy for the poor, there are sound biblical reasons for upholding secure borders, national traditions, and responsible welfare policies.

The same cannot be said for the standard policy platform of a modern progressive party — which variously includes abortion-on-demand, sex-change surgery for children, assisted suicide, unrestricted immigration, discrimination against majorities, and porn and drag queens in public libraries (all dressed up in euphemistic language, of course).

Third-wayism urges Christians to rebuke both sides equally. But there’s no comparison between the right’s lack of empathy and the left’s outright rebellion against God’s created order. Any attempt to confront both equally will inevitably mean nitpicking conservatives while excusing progressives — a pattern aptly described as “punch right, coddle left”.

Ultimately, third-wayism favours the progressive cause by giving Christians equal permission to support political causes that proudly oppose the ways of God. The end result is an acceleration of the culture’s godless drift.

I no longer accept the idea that political symmetry is a spiritual virtue.

Third, third-wayism accepts our culture’s contempt for Christianity as fair and accurate, rather than misguided.

It’s no secret that Western societies are now openly hostile to Christians and Christian values. Yet many Christians downplay this reality. How? By assuming that, when we are faced with hostility from secular progressives, the problem lies primarily with us, and not with the culture’s distorted values.

This is a serious misdiagnosis. It leads Christians to become overly accommodating in an effort to stay “credible”. But when we dilute our convictions to gain the world’s approval, the church weakens its witness and Christian leaders abandon their prophetic calling. Thus, what began as a mission to transform the culture ends with the culture transforming the church. We’ve all seen it.

Instead, I have decided to let God’s values, not the culture’s shifting standards, guide my witness on these issues.

5. I Recognised Progressivism’s Danger

Throughout my time in ministry, and accelerating in the years since, I’ve noticed a pattern so common it’s almost a rule: When someone walks away from their faith, progressive politics played a pivotal role in their deconstruction.

The reason for this is not complicated: politics is worldview.

And while conservatism isn’t the same as Christianity and still must be measured against God’s Word, a progressive worldview entails an outright rejection of clear biblical truths, like:

  • Every human life is sacred from the womb to the grave
  • God created humanity as male and female
  • Marriage is for one man and one woman
  • The nuclear family is God’s design for society
  • Parents, not the state, are responsible for raising their children
  • Private property is part of God’s created order
  • People should be judged as individuals, not by identity groups
  • Freedom of speech, conscience and religion should be protected

What I see now, more clearly than before, is that progressivism isn’t just a political preference — it’s a rival worldview fundamentally at odds with core Christian beliefs. Or as commentator Josh Daws has put it, “progressive politics is an off-ramp from the Christian faith”.

Being progressive today means accepting that men can get pregnant, abortion is a “right”, speech is violence if it offends, borders are immoral, white people are inherently oppressive, traditional values mask extremism, and objective truth is a tool of control.

Is it any wonder that progressivism is so effective at causing Christians to deconstruct their faith?

Having come to terms with the fierce rivalry between the Christian and progressive worldviews, I can no longer stay silent about it.

6. I Saw Conservatism Pointing People to Christ

If progressivism is an off-ramp from the Christian faith, I have also noticed the corollary to be true: conservatism often serves as an on-ramp to the Christian faith.

With the possible exception of the United States, progressive beliefs now form the popular consensus across the Western world — so much so that obvious truths (like the list above) have become taboo.

But when something is forbidden, it often becomes desirable again — a phenomenon known as the Streisand Effect. And that is what we are now seeing unfold, as people rebel against the progressive hegemony thrust upon them in school and society.

Of course, not all of the rebellion is positive. But there has been a noticeable shift, one I’ve been writing about anecdotally for years, and that is now reflected in survey data: more and more secular people are rejecting progressivism, first for more conservative beliefs, and then for Christ. For example:

  • In England and Wales, church attendance has risen 50% in recent years, driven predominantly by 18-24-year-old men, whose church attendance has quadrupled from 4% to 16% — and 21% of whom now attend monthly.
  • In the United States, the decades-long decline of Christianity has ground to a halt, driven by a resurgence of Christian identity among young men, who are also trending back towards conservatism.
  • In Australia, despite ongoing decline in overall Christian affiliation, almost 800,000 people identified as Christian in 2021 after previously stating they had no religion, with many driven by a search for meaning and belonging.

What these data points suggest is that secular Westerners — young people especially — are rejecting the progressive worldview in search of stronger foundations, ultimately finding faith in Jesus. For many, that journey took them via conservatism, which gave them a bedrock for human dignity, objective truth, commonsense morality and civilisation itself which they couldn’t find elsewhere.

Here is where we see a fourth fatal flaw of Keller’s third-wayism. It convinces us to tailor the gospel to progressive ears, thereby alienating a harvest field of secular conservatives, many of whom are just a step or two away from committing to Christ.

While the gospel is for all people, I believe God has given me a specific calling to reach “Christless conservatives” — a group too long overlooked by the church but now white for harvest.

7. I Became a Father

The final thing that’s changed for me is very personal: I became a father — which, if you’re a parent, may be all I need to say.

The world we leave behind is the one our children inherit. And I’m committed to making it as safe, free, sane, and virtuous for my kids as I found it. Moreso if possible.

Yes, Jesus warned that persecution will come for Christians. But no, He didn’t command us to sit by as others — whether Christian or secular — suffer harm from oppressive laws and leaders.

We are commanded to speak up for the voiceless (Proverbs 31:8), defend the oppressed (Isaiah 1:17), love mercy (Micah 6:8), establish justice (Amos 5:15), and overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21).

So, if you’ve noticed a shift in my messaging, it’s real. But it’s also intentional and carefully considered.

And while I welcome thoughtful pushback and understand I may sometimes deserve rebuke, I invite my Christian critics to be equally passionate about confronting the injustices in our culture as they are in critiquing my views or tone.

After all, the need is urgent, and the hour is late.

Kurt, wow, what a testimony! Thank you so much. We don’t ‘need’ acknowledgement and approval for doing the right thing, the reward is there already, nevertheless your testimony is just that for me.

Brilliant exposition of your position and accurate description of the weak western church attitude. I heard once that the church is a Samson that has lost its hair. The Wilberforce mention was particularly strong and helpful.

Your words speak to me … and so very clearly.
10 years ago I retired as an Anglican Vicar and in the years since I can relate to all that you say and very nearly all of it applies to me. A compulsion to speak out on all the matters you raise drives me! I’m also a grandfather and do wonder just what will be left in Australia for my grandchildren when they are adults and hopefully parents too. Daily it becomes more and more of an unknown as the forces of cultural Marxism continue their rampage through every single facet of Australian society, from the Courts to the Kindergartens, and everything in between. So sadly, much of the church has abandoned the clear word of God as found in the Holy Bible and is seemingly cheering it all on and fully involved in the destruction of our society.

Yes and Amen Brother, fight the good fight! There’s a very good reason two of the elements of the armour of God are offensive weapons designed for attacking the enemy- the sword and prayer. If the gates of hell will not prevail against us the church, we will have to get up, march to those gates and attack with everything we’ve got. And you my brother are one amongst a growing number of soldiers in this spiritual war in the army of God.
Let us all continue to pray for you and and your family in Jesus’ Mighty name.

Kurt, I totally agree with you in all of your points, I’ve been outraged with this satanic ideology, as Christians we’re not to sit idly doing nothing, I don’t have much eloquence to get involved directly, English is my second language, but I pray and share the pertinent articles with as many people I can possible do, we are to fight evil in all its forms, and fufill the Great Commission, it’s what the Lord Jesus asks from us.

Thank you Kurt for this very honest and thought provoking testimony. You warned us of the current trends in our culture and demonstrated why we must make a stand.
If no one blows the whistle on what is happening with the introduction of values of anti God values (eg. Marxism, aetheism, gender confusion, anti semistism, abortion and laws pushing those who have Godly values such as safegarding male and female in a marriage and child rearing by parents with Christian values instead of ‘the state’) then our society will fall into chaos and ruin.
In many ways we have seen this occuring since the 1960’s and earlier with the rise of a new form of ‘western’ socialist – communism in the West, which follwoed after the New age, hippe and freedom drug and alcohol culture, which all favoured ‘self’ and humanism and hedonism.
Now we face the results with several generations who have been imbibing these values and seeking peace, freedom, wealth, and entertainment- though many have chosen to work in helping professions, as teaching and medicine, social work while others have turned to building professions, farming and sought to help the community.
Most of those hard working people have met brick wall restrictions from the Govt through COVID which brought them down. Many schools and hospitals lost their staff and children were traumatised. .Others like the ADF allowed the gender issue in, and many ADF have left as they don’t find they can handle the strict rules around people’s identity eg not allowed to use the pronounds, ‘he’ or ‘she’ but only ‘person’ or whatever.
Many entered a noble profession too and found the red tape unbearable and change of values suffocating (eg Govt trying to ban Christian staff in the Christian schools and threatneding to take all rights away)
Thank you for making a stand through praying, writing, speaking out, teaching and on platforms like Canberra Declaration.

I am currently reading a book ‘…and the World remained silent’ by Ben Abraham who went through Auschwitz as a teenager and saw all his family die and millions of Jews die around him. It shows the power of one evil leader, Hitler (who was demon possessed according to authors Dave Hunt who traced his interaction with mediums and dark spiritual forces) and his regime and how they swept through the world with the aim to kill all Jewish people. The minority that fought back by saving Jews or by taking them food or hiding them, did so at the risk of their lives. It helps me get perspective on what happens when good people don’t act or speak up (or are deceived) and it shows how far evil can penetrate country after country.
…It’s a reminder of what happens if we don’t speak up against evil or if we don’t help the victims. It’s a reminder too of the price to be paid for making a stand.
Our Saviour Jesus Christ was persecuted for proclaiming the kingdom of God was at hand and for doing good, for delivering those in bondage and proclaiming forgiveness…Through it all He trusted His heavenly Father and never backed down from His call to point upward, to proclaim new life, to defend the poor and needy, to demonstrate forgiveness and to walk the road of suffering, knowing many would be saved and great joy awaited Him in heaven

Thanks Kurt, this article clearly explains where you are coming from and it has great validity.
I have been reading the Daily Declaration daily for about the last 12 months. However, recently I have been thinking much about Philippians 4/8-9. It seems that DD doesn’t match the 8 points.
    True — hopefully always.
    Honorable — often not.
    Right— hopefully yes
    Pure — sometimes
Lovely — one sometimes one or two per day.
    Admirable—as above
    Excellent— as above
    Worthy of praise—as above

I am finding that if I want to obey Phil 4/8-9, I need to be selective. Otherwise I could get depressed.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts here Amee, including your comments on the Daily Declaration. This is an issue that we sometimes wrestle with as an editorial team. However, if we were to apply Philippians 4:8-9 in that way consistently, it would mean also avoiding much of Scripture itself! E.g. the books of Job and Lamentations, and even many of the teachings and warnings of Jesus. I believe Philippians 4:8-9 calls us to lift our eyes to God’s goodness and truth in the midst of the evil and suffering in this world, not by avoiding the latter. And some are called to engage prophetically with it more than others, and I believe that’s the case for me, at least at the moment. It’s also true that there are times and seasons to engage with certain issues and times to refrain. The key is to discern our particular ministries and the best use of our energies. Hope these comments find you well.

Dear Amee, I read your comments and it challenged me to think out what you have observed…. I am one who loves to be positive and to keep looking up. I love Phlippians chpt 4 and try to abide by the gudielines but ia lso think of how jesus handled things
…I hope these thoughts help explain what I see occuring, in Jesus ministry as He tackled many hard situations.
I think there were times Jesus had to address his audience with unwanted truths eg to the pharisees He needed to say at one time, ‘you white washed walls’ and at another time, ‘Can the Blind lead the blind?’…
Sometimes he didn’t stay around when He foresaw the motive in the heart of some like the Pharisees, and instead he just escaped from their midst in order to avoid negative talk (more like nick picking)….
Yet in different ways ,Jesus kept to speaking wholesome truths but here and there he needed to expose erroror deceit to cover up or hypocrisy. Only in those more ‘negative’ times did he use more severe language or humour or a parable to get his truths across.
On the whole though I think Jesus sowed love and spoke the truth in love (even to the Pharisees-as it was a wake up call and away to help them move forward in faith, and away from too much legalism)…
He also at times had to speak with urgency eg when leaving His disciples he said ‘the hour has come’ and later said ‘my soul is deeply troubled’ but in all this He submitted to the Father’s will and knew he would suffer but knew deep within the resurrection would occur with a return to His father….And He promised His disciples He would come back, even though it would be at a time of war and rumours of wars, and a time of decit and betrayal…he tried to prepare His disciples for what lay ahead by sharing the prophecies that would be fufilled.. (many were words of warning)
I think what you have raised and asked is a deep question
We all must take heed to dwell on the eternal promises of keeping His peace (‘not as this world gives’) and His love burning in our heart and to show His forgivness and not get too deeply entrenched in any depressing events (even they they will come about, yet they will pass by too), as he is Victor and said ‘they will cover come by their testimony of Jesus ‘ and by the ‘blood of the lamb’…The Joy of the Lord (and our salvation) is our strength too.
. Thanks for sharing ..May God help us all stay close to His heart and to keep His joy. Amen

Wow, Kurt. What a wonderful, deeply thoughtful article. I really appreciate your clarity, your analysis of the problems of “third way”, and your clear exposition of the biblical truths which are being denied today by the left and progressives, (unfortunately including many deluded Christians). The truth not only sets us free but provides the only real foundation for a healthy life and society. That is why it is so important to proclaim it very clearly.
I became caught in the “progressive “ lies of the 60s and within 12 years my life was completely broken. Since meeting and choosing to follow Christ 45 years ago and, since then, increasingly living in Truth I have found healing and new life.
One thing I would like to add, which is something that we have mostly lost in the West is that the nuclear family is God’s design for society and is supposed to exist within the network of clan, tribe and nation. This points to the importance of church community in our time and I think it will become increasingly important for families and all believers to be connected into the community of believers.

    Brilliantly written . Very insightful

I’ve enjoyed your journey as it has mirrored my own awakening

In addition to what you have written I think we need to stop using the word gender and go back to using the word sex. There are only two sexes, not two genders.

Doing this takes back the long surrendered linguistic high ground, often helpfully jars the listener, promotes a conversation, and is more consistent with the truth

Keller, whilst helpful in some respects, has other blind spots. In The Reason For God there is a particularly troubling chapter entitled The Social Consequences of Sin where his Cultural Marxist worldview unhelpfully pokes it head up.

Thanks so much Adam. It’s great to hear that others have been on a similar trajectory. I agree with you about Keller — there are many things I still appreciate about his ministry but I believe his heavy emphasis on city ministry undermined some of his big ideas that gained a lot of popularity. Likewise, I agree with your comments about gender. Using this in place of “sex” opened pandora’s box. I tend to put the word in quotation marks these days, but perhaps not often enough!

Thank you Kurt. Such an encouraging and helpful article to show us how to ‘ live not by lies’. Unfortunately, sometimes it is very hard to do even in church, where progressivism has been let loose. I am constantly driven to my knees.

I am noticing the same trend Anne, and it is disheartening to see. Our knees is where we need to be!

Great article Kurt!!!.Whilst we want to encourage and bless the saints the reason the Daily Declaration exists is to be a voice for Gods truth in a very untruthful world. In other words we have to deal with the untruths which are never pleasant.
Joel 2:1,2 is not Good News but still very needful,
    “Blow the [a]trumpet in Zion,
And sound an alarm in My holy mountain!
    Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble;
For the day of the Lord is coming,
    For it is at hand:
A day of darkness and gloominess,
A day of clouds and thick darkness.”

Just another thought Kurt, I am sure Pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer faced this same dilemma of pastor verses advocacy, when God called him to speak up against a ‘progressive’ culture that ultimately Hitler took over and moulded to suit his own evil intention to persecute and kill the Jews, using the guise of German nationalism as his motive.
So many Christians blindly followed Hitler and his national policy for the church (no Jews allowed) as they didn’t see what was occurring (in early days, the concentration camps extermination were hidden and Jews were told they were being taken to a holiday location.) We can learn many lessons from the situation in WW2 as deception grew so quickly, but also the punishments and coercion grew in such a way, most people reacted out of fear (but others were swept away by the desire to conform and free speech became non-existent. Many German people lost the ability to discern right from wrong and followed their leader but a minority helped the oppressed and those needing to escape the regime. Many like Bonhoffeur paid with their life but sided with truth and God’s word.

    I shared this today 23 /2/ 26 on facebook.
I retired around 2022 and I believe my comments since would have got me into trouble.

    Churches have continued to change…
Back around 1996 (when I was saved) messages focused on Jesus and scripture.
While there was a band, focus was on alter calls, healing and sharing the gospel.

I read Keith Greens, ‘No Compromise’ it changed my walk.
7 years later I became a Pastor, what a wake up call!
This became my focus, my messages may have contained humour, but they challenged and often, I was told to calm down.
I class myself as a Warrior / Watchman.

I was called by God (credentialed by man)
    My calling hasn’t been revoked!

These days to me, it appears, it’s entertainment, night club atmosphere, coffee, loud music by professionals, lights & motivational messages that don’t challenge or offend!

    Am I against church? NO!

But I am against the quietness of current church leaders who appear afraid of speaking as to what is happening in Australia, be it politically or Islamic.

Galatians 1:8… ‘But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse!

By allowing what’s happening today to go unchallenged, to me, many Christians are turning away from their choice to be a Christian and allowing a message (received supposedly by the Angel Gabriel, that is Islam) to be publicly preached that replaces the bible!

Wake up, before Australia becomes England!
