“Prayer and Fasting Starts Today!” Lauren Daigle’s Call to Prayer and Heartfelt Charlie Kirk Reflection

Grammy Award-winning Christian artist Lauren Daigle has taken to social media in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s assassination, inviting people to join her in daily Scripture reading, prayer, and fasting.

Thousands have been impacted by the events of last week, with the horrific murder of conservative Christian activist Charlie Kirk, as he conversed with students at Utah Valley University. Cultural, political, and religious leaders from around the world have expressed their outrage and heartbreak at the assassination — calling out the vile celebrations of Kirk’s death.

At the same time, the tragic events have provoked many Christians to a renewed commitment to prayer, Scripture reading, repentance, fellowship, and fasting.

As I have previously covered, a range of Christian musical artists have spoken boldly about the impact that Charlie’s death has had on them — and called people to repentance and faith in Jesus. Australian singer Joel Smallbone, of for King & Country, shared a beautiful prayer by his cousin for peace in the face of violence — dedicating it to “the family of Iryna Zarutska, for Erika Kirk and her little ones, for the hurting community at Evergreen High School”.

Award-winning composer-producer Tommee Profitt released a new single entitled “A Hero’s Return” — with the following comment: “In 2019 I released a song called “A Hero’s Departure” …in 2025 that hero returns home.”

Skillet frontman John Cooper had some powerful words for an audience at UpriseFest over the weekend, reflecting on Kirk’s murder: “…we do not have to fear because Jesus reigns. Hallelujah!”

“…it used to be that pretty much in America the worst thing that happens to you if you were unashamed of Jesus Christ is that you get made fun of a little bit. It’s hard to remember those days and sometimes I look back at maybe when I was younger and I say, man, we should be so ashamed of ourselves. We wouldn’t even stand up for Jesus and all it cost us was a few people making fun of us at school. Are you kidding me? Then it got just a little bit worse, and you found out that you could get cancelled for standing for Jesus and the worst that happens is you might lose your job… but we’re in a different time now. […] It could cost you your life to stand up for Jesus Christ…”

On Wednesday morning, two-time Grammy Award-winning Christian artist Lauren Daigle posted a thought-provoking response to the Charlie Kirk assassination to her 2.5 million Instagram followers — along with video of her immediate reactions to the news from a pre-concert Q&A. She also responded to fans who had criticised her for her silence up to that point.

Daigle called on people to look beyond the political fault-lines and to the reality of the “spiritual battle” of which we are all a part: “Good versus evil. Light versus dark.”

She quoted Ephesians 6:12:

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”

As people continue to process the horrific events of the past week, the singer urged people to remind themselves “that God is sovereign and that He will overcome evil with good.”

“I became extremely anxious and deeply heartbroken after learning of Charlie’s death, truly in shock that we have diluted human life to whether or not they offend us, whether we differ or agree. Is that all people are now? Just vessels carrying an opinion? Do we have no respect for human life?”

She rebuked those who had questioned her silence about the assassination:

“To those who have commented and questioned my silence around Charlie Kirk’s death, let me remind you that some of us actually don’t put social media first. We actually process with our loved ones, our friends, our families. We sort out what grief looks like in the PRIVATE versus the PUBLIC. Some of us are actually still human. I’m not silent; I’m angry and I’m in shock. Give me a freaking second to absorb, sit with God, and stop looking to ‘celebrities’ for your cure. I will never and don’t ever plan to be your fix. My timeline will never be yours. Let that sink in.”

Daigle then offered a powerful call to corporate fasting, Scripture reading, and prayer to push back against “the demonic forces of evil”:

“My plan is to read scripture and pray on my Instagram every day for the remainder of September. Fasting is supernatural. When the world seems too heavy, it is the antidote to breakthrough. Don’t forget: GOD IS SOVEREIGN. Feel free to join me in the fight against despair, hopelessness, confusion and sorrow! Fasting and prayer is the battle cry 💪 United we stand because unity commands a blessing!”
