Prophets of Doom Strike Again — Brisbane to Become Atlantis, Townsville a Sauna
The Albanese Government has unveiled its inaugural climate risk assessment and, according to the document, Brisbane will soon be the lost city of Atlantis and Townsville a mass grave.
The modelling claims that if we don’t take drastic action, Brisbane could flood 314 days a year.
As for Townsville, heat-related deaths would increase by 350 per cent by the end of the century.
The report, dripping with adjectives like “landmark” and “confronting”, tells us that by 2050, more than 1.5 million Australians will be at risk of rising sea levels.
If this sounds familiar, it’s because we’ve heard it all before…
Al Gore said the Arctic would be ice-free by 2013.
Spoiler alert: it’s not.
A senior United Nations environmental official warned us in 1989 that entire nations could be swallowed by rising seas by the year 2000.
Yet here we are, two decades past the deadline, and real estate prices in beachfront suburbs haven’t exactly collapsed.
If beachfront property is really doomed, why does every climate crusader from Barack Obama to Kevin Rudd keep buying it?
Didn’t Albo buy a beachfront home a couple of years ago?
Same Old, Same Old
The “comprehensive” assessment concludes that climate risks will be “cascading, compounding and concurrent.”
When government reports use that much alliteration, you know things are serious.
The government insists Australians are already experiencing the impacts of climate change, though curiously, those impacts always sound like things that have been happening since the dawn of time: floods, bushfires, cyclones, heatwaves.
Apparently, weather only became a problem after the Industrial Revolution.
Of course, the dire modelling lands just in time for Labor to unveil its 2035 emissions reduction target.
Which, I suspect, is the point.
The report seems to me, less science, more sales pitch — a glossy brochure designed to scare us into accepting higher power bills, fewer jobs, and more government control over every aspect of our lives.
The problem for the doomsayers is history.
We’ve endured decades of these prophecies, and they never seem to eventuate.
Remember Tim Flannery assuring us in 2007 that dams would never fill again?
Within a few years of that prediction, our dams were overflowing.
The predictions are always wrong, but never in a way that undermines the narrative.
Instead of saying, “Sorry, we were wrong,” the experts simply move the goalposts further down the field, confident that by the time the deadline passes, no one will remember.
Not Adding Up
And even if the predictions were true, there’s the small matter of arithmetic.
Australia contributes just one per cent of global carbon emissions. One per cent. If we shut down every coal plant, every factory, every farm, every ute, and all move back into caves, the difference to global temperatures would be precisely nil.
Meanwhile, China builds a new coal-fired power plant every other week, but we’re the ones told to shiver in the dark to save the planet.
The report warns natural disasters will cost the economy $40 billion annually by 2050, while property values will collapse by more than half a trillion dollars.
By the 2060s, climate change will allegedly rob us of 2.7 million workdays a year.
But here’s the thing: governments can’t even predict next year’s budget deficit.
They can’t keep track of immigration numbers.
They can’t tell you whether a major project will be finished on time or on budget.
Heck, they can’t even take a measly $275 off your power bill
Yet we’re supposed to believe they can model the climate, the economy, and human behaviour 40 years from now with decimal-point precision.
What we are witnessing is not science but storytelling — apocalypse as political theatre.
The Albanese Government’s climate risk assessment is less about rising seas than it is about rising taxes and regulations.
The climate scare is the perfect crisis: always urgent, never verifiable, and conveniently unsolvable, ensuring a permanent excuse for government expansion.
So forgive me if I don’t lose sleep over predictions of Brisbane becoming Waterworld and Townsville turning into Death Valley.
The experts have cried wolf too many times.
Until the beachfront homes of climate activists start washing away, I’ll keep assuming their modelling is about as reliable as their policy delivery.

Great article.
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is essential to all life as it is essential to the survival of all plants which produce oxygen and food which are essential to all animal life. When there is a natural pressure (need) in the world to increase oxygen production along with a need to increase production of food for the increasing animal and human populations, then there is a natural process (through breathing and industry etc.) which increases carbon dioxide to meet that need by stimulating more plants to grow. Any increase in atmospheric temperatures that may result are useful to provide more evaporation from the oceans which provides more moisture in the atmosphere which creates more rain to help sustain increased plant growth. Any attempt to achieve net zero and break the natural cycle to achieve more food and oxygen on the earth is a recipe for long term famine, resulting in increased wars, diseases, and deaths. Why is the world intent on trying to control the climate to the point of harm? It can only be due to some secular religious belief masquerading as science.
I am fed up with the Lies and huge power bills whose rebate is cancelled in my case by GST. I now can’t afford to switch the heater on . Result ? I suffer from constant bronchitis. Thank you (sarcasm ) , Whitlam for Lima and the destruction of Australia’s manufacturing while China builds a coal-fired plant a week while we destroy the natural environment and cover our farmland (Food Bowl ) with solar panels, wind turbines and mine lithium, destroying water and the land forever . We are now going to have a statue in front of Old Parliament House to this “Great Man ” who destroyed our economy. Why not statues of Marx and Lenin beside his , so, we can be just like all the failed countries of the old Soviet Union !
Excellent article James. (Boy, it’s hot in here)
Re statues. It’s amazing that we can have statues for the lefties, but not for the amazing explorers etc
A brilliant article
God has promised to NEVER destroy the Earth again BY FLOOD— so rising oceans are not going to be the conduit for our demise— end of story. Spurious scientific theories trumped by Gods immutable promise.
