Day 31: Jesus Is Supreme
Intention
To refresh the Church’s vision of Jesus as the supreme king of creation and reconciliation, stirring awe, confidence and worship.
Scripture
“The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.
“He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.”
– Colossians 1:15–20
Reflection
2,000 years ago, back in Colossae, there were false teachers making Jesus smaller than he is. They were saying Jesus is just a manifestation of the gods. Paul writes to correct this, reminding them about who Jesus is.
In our day, people want to make Jesus smaller too. They tell us he is a good bloke, generous, and a great teacher. This is true — but he is so much more.
Paul gives a list of the beauty and wonder of Jesus. He is the ‘firstborn’, a title in Psalm 89:27 of the mighty king. Jesus is the ‘firstborn’ king over creation. He is king over all powers and authorities and over the physical and the spiritual world. He made everything from a small sugar glider to a towering mountain landscape. Jesus not only made everything but he sustains it all.
There is a popular photo of the sun rising, small in the sky, with a hand below the sun pretending to hold up the sun. When we think of Jesus, he actually holds up the sun, it is by his power that the sun rises each day, and by his involvement everything keeps going. Jesus is king over earth and the whole cosmos.
Creation was later corrupted by sin, but the king of the cosmos does not leave it that way. Jesus died as the peacemaker to reconcile all things to God. The creation, tainted by sin, and humans who have all wandered far from God, are both brought back through the cross. This monumental cross work of Jesus turns enemies into friends. This makes Jesus the ultimate peacemaker.
This passage is a list of great attributes of Jesus. Jesus is head of the Church, before all things, the image of God, the first to rise from the dead, and the one in whom creation finds its origin and reconciled destiny. Today let us celebrate Jesus who is supreme. He is the greatest above all others. He has no rival or equal. He is the king of creation and reconciliation.
Allow the lyrics of this song — “What a Beautiful Name” — stir your worship today:
What a wonderful name it is…
What a powerful name it is
The name of Jesus Christ my king…
You have no rival
You have no equal
Now and forever God you reign.
Next time you see a beautiful ocean landscape or rolling hills, I encourage you to pause and think, “I know the one who made that, my creator, saviour and friend.”

Prayer
We praise you, Jesus the king of the cosmos. We thank you for giving us life and sustaining our every breath. We praise you, the peacemaker, who brought us back to you through the cross. We thank you that we can live each day under Jesus our king and friend.
Forgive us, Lord, for when we make you smaller than you are. Forgive us for making custom lesser versions of you. We pray that you work in the churches across Australia and believers everywhere to enlarge our vision of you. Lord, grow our awe and confidence in you!
We pray that you will do a special work of peacemaking across Australia. Lord, we pray that you will soften people’s hearts and draw masses of people to yourself. Enlarge the vision of Australia’s people — that they would see your greatness and run to you. Turn lost ones into friends.
In your wonderful name — Jesus Christ our king — we pray. Amen.

The Church is wimpy, and it's destroying the nation. That's the blunt assessment of Rev. Chris Wickland, a UK clergyman who refuses to soften the gospel for perceived cultural acceptance. And he has a point. From the rise of "woke" institutional Christianity to the abdication of prophetic witness, the modern Church has traded its backbone for a desperate attempt to attain a disappearing seat at the table.
