Intention

To raise up pro-life advocates who are able to influence our culture for Christ, defend the unborn, and provide support to children, mothers and fathers.

Scripture

“You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world.

“Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.”

– Matthew 5:13–14, 16

Reflection

In the Scripture above, Jesus commands his disciples to be the salt and light of the world, preserving our communities and cultures from sin and shining God’s righteousness around us for all to see. This applies to all areas of our lives, and of course, includes our advocacy for the unborn.

How can we become effective ‘salt and light’ pro-life advocates? The answer lies in five main areas where we can and should make significant contributions to the pro-life movement.

1. Educate Others

Many Christians remain uninformed about abortion, its consequences, and the laws governing it. This leaves the pro-abortion worldview with significant influence over public opinion and political policy.

As you grow in your own understanding, look for opportunities to educate those around you. This does not require a large public campaign. It might begin with a conversation over coffee with a friend, family member, colleague, or church leader.

In my experience teaching prospective pastors and church leaders, I have found that many are unfamiliar with both the arguments surrounding abortion and the laws governing their communities. This highlights the need for greater education within the Church. One of the most practical things you can do is invite your pastor or church leader for coffee and start a conversation about life and abortion.

2. Influence the Culture

Jesus commanded his disciples to be “salt and light” in the world (Matthew 5:13–16). Christians are therefore not called to withdraw from culture but to engage it faithfully and intentionally.

Today, social media provides an extraordinary opportunity. We no longer need to rely solely on traditional media gatekeepers to decide which arguments reach the public. Christians can educate, persuade, organise, and reach thousands — or even millions — of people directly.

But cultural engagement extends beyond social media. Christians can establish pro-life groups at universities, support pro-life alternatives within professional fields, engage in political parties, meet with MPs, volunteer in campaigns, and, where appropriate, stand for political office. If we want to change unjust laws and protect unborn lives, we cannot simply complain from the sidelines.

The Church itself must also become a place where Christians are discipled on the issue of life. Invite your pastor for coffee. Ask whether you can host a presentation or discussion in your church. Invite a reputable pro-life organisation to speak.

Our goal should not merely be to produce activists but to build churches that faithfully defend human dignity and support mothers, fathers, and children.

3. Pray

We must also recognise that this is ultimately a spiritual battle. Paul warns that people can be taken “captive” by the philosophies of their age (Colossians 2:8). We therefore need wisdom to speak truth with both courage and grace.

Pray privately and publicly for unborn children, women facing crisis pregnancies, church leaders, politicians, and those working to protect life. Public prayer reminds us that abortion is not merely a political issue but an issue before God — and before our communities.

4. Support

Supporting women facing crisis pregnancies is essential. Many organisations do this work — providing practical, emotional, and material assistance — but they are often poorly resourced and need your help.

Consider volunteering your time or financially supporting reputable organisations. If there is no crisis pregnancy centre in your community, consider whether your church could establish one. Being pro-life means not only defending the unborn child but standing beside the mother and ensuring she does not face her crisis alone.

5. Give

Every movement requires resources. Financial support enables pro-life organisations to educate communities, advocate for life, support women, develop resources, and reach wider audiences.

Whether individually, as a church, or as an organisation, consider supporting reputable pro-life work. Even a small contribution can help equip others, support vulnerable women, and protect unborn lives.

Prayer

Dear Father in Heaven,

We ask you, as the Lord of the Harvest (Matthew 9:38), to raise us up as Christians who are educated about life issues and the topic of abortion. We pray that you strengthen our courage to engage faithfully in the spheres of influence where you have placed us. Give us new power from the Holy Spirit this day, and every day, to live lives dedicated to being salt and light in our culture. We ask these things for your glory.
