Easter Prayer for Our Elderly During the Covid-19 Crisis
A very specific prayer on the Covid-19 crisis. It is known that the elderly are more likely to be ill and die than other age groups that the virus affects – along with others with chronic ill health, lung disease, reduced immunity, diabetes etc.
This comment and prayer focuses on the elderly who are over 70 years of age.
Our society has changed a lot since this age group grew up. We used to have pasteurised milk delivered to schools for consumption at morning recess with a yummy layer of cream on the surface. Ah, how we looked forward to this healthy treat. That was before it was homogenised and the cream disappeared.
And we would have Bible readings and recitations at Assembly, and even sing a hymn.
And a considerable proportion of children went to Sunday School, and were again exposed to reading of the Bible and Sunday School songs.
This knowledge can form the basis of our prayers.
“Lord God, we pray for a movement of Your Holy Spirit in this group of people who would be the ones most likely to have memories of Your Word and songs of childhood, and stir these memories up.
In their fears and uncertainties and perhaps frenzied discarding of possessions, may they remember the certainties that You alone can give. May they ponder these things, and may they turn to You for comfort and may they surrender to You as Lord and Saviour.
May You somehow provide the right people to contact them, who can offer encouragement and help answer their questions. May they hear such comfort and answers on the media they listen to.
Lord, please help us to discharge our duties in these things, but where doors are closed, may Your Holy Spirit work, and may many come to know You as triumphant Lord of all, and Saviour.”
Psalms 23, 46, 91, and 121 are ones that most children would have been exposed to.
For those of you that are not in lockdown, could you also ring some of these people and perhaps offer to help, e.g. with shopping. Also, ask them about Easter and what it means to them.
Humbly, praying with you for a work of God in our nation. Passion Week, 2020.
