Leadership Matters – But Principles Matter More

22 October 2025

2.1 MINS

Leadership changes don’t just shift political party rooms – they shape a nation’s direction.

In recent weeks, talk of Liberal leadership rumblings has once again filled the media – complete with speculation, polling, and anonymous quotes.

But behind the noise lies a deeper question: what kind of leadership does Australia need?

Ultimately, it’s not about personalities. It’s about principles.

Courage That Speaks Plainly

Two names stand out lately: Andrew Hastie and Jacinta Nampijinpa Price.

Hastie has spoken bluntly about migration levels, the strain on housing and infrastructure – and has also weighed unapologetically into the Net Zero debate.

He’s been willing to say what many ordinary Australians already know: that our nation’s future depends on policies rooted in reality, not wishful thinking.

Jacinta Price, likewise, has shown remarkable backbone. She’s faced hostility from her own side of politics and relentless attacks from political opponents, yet continues to defend common sense – like Andrew Hastie, from the backbench.

Both are reminders that real leadership is measured not by media praise, but by the courage to tell the truth.

Direction, Not Drama

Australia doesn’t need another round of internal party theatre. It needs leaders – in every party – who know who they are and what they stand for.

As I wrote recently, real change takes clarity and strategy – not confusion and slogans.

That lesson applies to the Liberal Party as much as to any activist movement. Without conviction, political movements drift. Without moral clarity, policy collapses into spin.

Too often, decisions are shaped by focus groups and consultants instead of conscience and conviction.

Three Tests of Leadership

Courage: Will leaders speak truth when it costs them political comfort?

Conviction: Do they believe in something deeper than the next poll, headline, or focus group finding?

Vision: Can they offer a moral compass, not just a marketing plan?

These are the tests that matter – whether those elected to lead can still articulate a vision grounded in life, family, and freedom.

When the major centre-right party loses moral direction, every national debate shifts left by default.

This is why even those outside the Liberal Party must still care.

What You Can Do

Here’s how you can help ensure the Liberal Party – and Australian politics more broadly – regains its moral compass:

If you’re a Liberal Party member:
Keep speaking up inside your branch and electorate conferences. Encourage MPs like Hastie and Price who show moral clarity. Let MPs know that voters reward integrity, not appeasement.

If you’re a member of another party:
Hold your leaders to the same standard. Push for policies that defend family, life, and freedom and resist any drift toward political convenience.

If you’re not currently in any political party:
Consider joining the Liberals precisely to strengthen its moral backbone. Help shape candidate selections, motions, and direction from within. For evidence it can be done, look to South Australia, where Senator Alex Antic has just been re-elected at first place on the Liberal Senate ticket.

A Final Thought

Leadership will always change. Principles must not.

Australia deserves leaders who are steady, truthful, and free – men and women unafraid to stand for what’s right even when their opponents jeer.

When we have enough of these leaders, Australia can start advancing again.
