Evangeline Lilly walked away from Hollywood to pursue a deeper purpose. Today, her Christian faith, humanitarian calling and passion for human creativity shape her next chapter.

Evangeline Lilly ditching Hollywood in 2020 seems to have opened more doors than it closed.

Lilly is not just a successful actress. She’s a mother of two, a humanitarian and a writer with a significant social media following.

Faith at the Heart of Her Journey

Speaking with The Christian Post in an August exclusive, the Lost star said that her faith is the most important thing to her.

The interview addressed speculation about how she’s doing since she left the rat race, and whether or not she still holds to the tenets of her Christian Evangelical upbringing.

She told The Christian Post, “At my core, the thing that’s most important to me is my faith. What’s most important to me is philosophy and really thinking through the great questions, the big, huge, important questions in life.”

Her answers also explained why she chose to be in Gidi Dar’s 2021 film about the A.D. 70 Roman destruction of the Second Temple, called Legend of Destruction.

The film relied on around 1,500 hand-drawn digital sketches and illustrations, not artificial intelligence.

It was just released on Amazon, Apple and Google Play.

A Biblical Story Brought to Life by Human Hands

While promoting the release, The Hobbit and Lost TV series star said that she came out of retirement because Dar’s film used paintings, sound, vocal ability and camera movement.

For Lilly, a major critic of AI in the art world, this was a countercultural celebration of human artistry.

As she stated, “It still felt to me like this incredible act of revolution to take the beauty of these hand-painted oil paintings and bring them to life through story and sound and camera movements.”

Lilly added that watching paintings was like sitting around a fire listening to a story.

“It’s what human art does,” she said.

“We lived this story as a species. It has our collective blood in it, and it is told by human hands through human imagination and human heart.”

Her own name, Nicole Evangeline Lilly, is deeply connected to what she believes in.

When talking about the film and her interest in the stories of Biblical women, she said, “It wasn’t until I became really passionately… dedicated to my faith that I was like, ‘I want to know what that name means.’”

“I found out it meant ‘victorious Evangelical bride of Christ,’ and I was like, ‘Oh, that’s a big responsibility.’”

Trading Hollywood Fame for a Greater Purpose

Woman Alive’s Jemimah Wright expanded on the Christian Post interview by fleshing out the faith bits.

Fame and some big life changes haven’t made Lilly’s journey easy. Those experiences prompted questions and searching.

Quoting InHabit Magazine, Wright added that while Lilly still considers herself a 100% Christ follower, her faith is a lot more explorative and inclusive.

That includes, Wright noted, Lilly engaging in “long, meandering philosophical conversations with God.”

Additionally, Lilly’s humanitarian interests come from, and are informed by, her devout Christian background.

As Wright’s research concluded, “That combination of faith, questioning and concern for people on the margins has remained a thread through Lilly’s life.”

An injury in 2025 illustrated the not-so-easy part. The actress, who lives in Hawaii, sustained a serious traumatic brain injury after a fall.

She later started a Substack using a recount of the incident to launch the account.

In a 2024 Instagram Reel reflecting on her Hollywood retirement, Lilly said, “I am so filled with joy and contentment today as I live out my vision. Praise God, I feel so grateful for my blessings.”

Indicative of her current journey, Lilly added, “Stepping away from what seems like the obvious choice (wealth and fame) can feel scary at times, but stepping into your dharma replaces the fear with fulfilment.

“I might return to Hollywood one day, but, for now, this is where I belong. A new season has arrived, and I AM READY… and I AM HAPPY.”

Hello Magazine said Lilly’s focus these days is on recovery and healing, spending time in Hawaii as well as meeting with Lost fans at major events.

Finding Freedom in God’s Plan

Last week, the actress spoke with CBN about leaving Hollywood, saying that the decision to walk away was made in 2020.

“It’s been six years,” she said.

“So, it’s been a long time of adjusting and discovering what this decision is, and what the consequences of it would be.

“There have definitely been moments of fear of, like, how do you consciously and intentionally let go of so much seemingly power and influence and potentially money; and also just affirmation of yourself.

“Like, when you’re successful at something, it feels really good when the world says, ‘We love you. You’re amazing.’ This is a wonderful feeling. How do you walk away from that?”

Lilly recalled asking herself, “What am I doing?”

She wanted to be more hands-on than what big-screen fame would allow. This goes back to her college days studying political science and international relations.

Lilly told CBN that, pre-Hollywood, her goal was humanitarian, missionary or diplomatic work.

Today, she’s more content using her success to help people mend, become whole and discover their spiritual gifts.

“I love telling stories,” Lilly explained. “But I’d like to tell stories of my own instead of being in front of the camera.”

She added, “I’d much prefer a quieter position. I don’t love being; I’ve always hated being famous. I never made any secrets about that.

“It’s just been incredibly liberating and beautiful to step into a total trust and surrender that God has a plan for my life.

“That plan doesn’t necessarily need to; it doesn’t have to be about fame and money and wealth and power. It can be about more important things, and all of it works together.”

On leaving Hollywood, Lilly said she has no regrets, adding that she’s healthier, happier and glad she did.
