The Church’s Fatal Silence on Australia’s Abortion Catastrophe

22 May 2026

5.5 MINS

Fifty-seven years of legalised abortion have left the Australian Church complicit in silence. It’s time for repentance, reformation, and decisive political action.

The Church in Australia prays routinely for revival, but while our hands are drenched in the blood of innocents, which is more likely: revival, or judgement?

Hear me out.

Next Tuesday is the anniversary of legalised abortion-for-any-reason in Australia.

The Blood on Our Hands: How Australia Got Here

57 years ago, on 26 May 1969, the “Menhennitt Decision” became one of the most consequential examples of judge-made law in Australian social policy, transforming abortion regulation across Victoria and influencing the rest of the nation, without any democratic, parliamentary process.

Abortion was a criminal act in law, unless it could be justified under a common law principle of “necessity”, which legislation did not define.

Abortionist (serial baby killer) Dr Charles Davidson was prosecuted for performing abortions. Justice Menhennitt instructed the jury that abortion would not be unlawful if it was done to protect the mother’s “mental health”.

This heinous stretching of the definition of “necessity” radically changed how the law operated, and “mental health” became a ridiculously broad term essentially meaning a mother’s stress if she couldn’t kill her baby.

It is surely no coincidence that the weak and feminised Church in Australia had no will to end the grievous sin and curse of child sacrifice in Australia as the curse and sin of feminism spread across this land like a cancer in the ’60s and ’70s.

But it was much easier in those days.

A Church That Looked Away

Eighty-six percent of Australians claimed to be Christian in the early ’70s, so it should have been my parents’ generation which demanded anti-abortion candidates only, and refused to support any not committed to completely criminalising the intentional homicide of any living human in law.

But a generation or more of Christians, for 57 years now, have given tacit approval to the increasingly sanitised sacrifice of our babies on the altars of career, convenience and consumerism.

I hasten to acknowledge that the prolife movement in Australia has been faithful and diligent, but they have been ignored and abandoned by a Church unwilling to actually preach the Gospel — good news — in a way which Jesus defined as “setting free those who are oppressed”.

“Gen Z” was born between 1997 and 2012. Up to 300,000 Australians were born every year in those years, and up to 100,000 Australians were killed by their mothers before they could be born every year — and still are.

Politicians talk about the need for skilled migration and population growth — but they legalise, subsidise, medicalise and normalise the child sacrifice industry which has deliberately killed 100,000 people a year for 21 years.

The abortion industry has butchered 2 million Australians who will never be raised in our language, culture, beliefs, values, skills and strengths.

And the “Christians” keep voting for politicians and candidates who are pro abortion, even while there are strong anti-abortion candidates.

The Ballot Box: Where Belief Meets Accountability

We are guilty of actually promoting the abortion industry, and perpetuating child sacrifice, by failing to end our support of pro-abortion candidates.

To be perfectly clear from God’s view of social policy, if a candidate says they are “Christian” or “prolife” but they claim some abortions are “necessary” or they’ll act “next term”, or words to that effect, they should get absolutely ZERO primary votes from Christians who care.

But nearly no Christians actually care — not enough to change their vote. Words without actions following are worthless, and it’s past time someone told the Church to stop pretending it cares, and to take decisive action.

There were 124,447 people enrolled to vote in the Farrer by-election. Only 1.21% of those people voted for the only anti-abortion candidate.

Christians quantifiably don’t care about the curse of child-sacrifice in their city, state or nation. They don’t care about the purpose of motherhood in every woman destroyed by voluntary violence. They don’t care about the shedding of innocent blood.

The evidence is plain and undeniable.

Slogans don’t save lives; anti-abortion governments in anti-abortion parliaments filled with anti-abortion politicians do.

Are there fewer than 1,200 Bible-believing Christians in the electorate of Farrer who go to a church which teaches its people that Almighty God hates, detests and is furiously angered by the shedding of innocent blood and child sacrifice?

“There are six things that the Lord hates,
even seven things that are an abomination to Him:
… hands that shed innocent blood.”
— Proverbs 6:16-17

“They sacrificed their sons and daughters to demons.
They shed innocent blood—
the blood of their sons and daughters.”
— Psalm 106:37-38

“This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, has said, “Look here! I am about to bring a disaster on this place that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it ring. I will do so because these people have rejected me and have defiled this place… They have filled it with the blood of innocent children.”
—Jeremiah 19:3-4

Read also Jeremiah 7, Ezekiel 16 & 23, 2 Kings 24, Isaiah 59, Leviticus 18 & 20, Deuteronomy 12 & 18 to see how much God hates the shedding of innocent blood and child sacrifice, and how His wrath is kindled against nations which swim in it — like us.

Is there no fear of God in Australian Christians? Is there a reckless readiness to tell Him why it was more important to give their primary vote to a collaborator in killing babies? I doubt it!

Every pulpit in every electorate should be preaching before elections that Psalm 106 ties together child sacrifice, the shedding of innocent blood, demonic worship, pollution of the land and the rage of Almighty God.

I’ve heard countless ignorant arguments from conservative Christians why they think it’s okay or even necessary to put a pro-some-abortion candidate above the only anti-abortion candidate on their ballot.

If pulpits are responsible for training people in righteousness and imparting the kind of political wisdom young King Solomon prayed for in 1 Kings 3:9, then pastors, priests and preachers should conclude teaching their people how to use the preferential vote system before pre-polling starts.

People love to complicate a perfectly simple system which can be taught with one verb.

Rank.

It’s not an endorsement or approval or agreement system. It’s a preference system. Simply and only rank every available option on your ballot like Jesus would. Don’t try to be strategic or pick a winner; the preference system will sort that out. Don’t argue, for you’d be wrong.

There is never ever any excuse for putting a pro-some-abortion candidate above an anti-abortion candidate if you have that option on your ballot.

To fear God is to hate child sacrifice and shedding innocent blood. No one can argue from Scripture that anything else is more important.

Now Is the Time: The Church Must Rise

Let the Church repent of utterly inexcusable apathy, and be famous as she was in centuries gone by of championing the Sanctity of Human Life, Imago Dei.

Let every congregation in Australia devote 1% of their offerings and turnover to their nearest pregnancy resource centre, and partner with them in prayer, promotion and practical support.

Let every shepherd in every congregation become part of the House of Refuge ministry, exhorting his flock to run to the Church for support and unconditional love, instead of an abortion clinic if and when they find themselves afraid of the gossip and whispers.

Let every pulpit resound with the heartbreak and anger of God at the sin of abortion that we have tolerated and looked away from, lead the Church in repentance for its atrophy, and commit to ending abortion in Australia NOW!

I am convening an event two days after the 57th anniversary of Menhennitt for under 30s who will not, like the generations before them, leave this curse for another generation to prophetically rise up and destroy. They are not waiting to be invited to lead Australia, they are not waiting for pulpits to lead the Church to repentance and prophetic zeal.

They are the NOW! generation. The free event will be livestreamed from Logan, Queensland, around the nation. Go to casNOW.au to save your seat, support the mission, or watch the livestream, and for full details.

Then just two weeks later, the 9th annual Church And State Australian Summit will devote all of Saturday morning to confronting the sin of the Church and the States in our nation of hosting this demonic principality for 57 years. May God have mercy on us and forgive us, and use us mightily to bring repentance, reformation and revival to this land, before it’s too late for Australia.

The Church is the answer.

God bless Australia!

A huge thank you for this post, Dave. The crime of unlimited abortion right up to birth in every state of this nation surely cries out to heaven. We can’t hope that God will bless our land while the unlimited slaughter continues unabated. In some states, possibly all, if a viable baby happens to be born alive instead of dead, it’s called a ‘failed abortion’ and left to die, alone and unloved.
All of this is the result of the demonic infiltration of every aspect of our society, churches especially.
Every church needs to repent for decades of timid inactivity; for decades of being too frightened to go against ‘the culture of death’ and for pretending that abortion is something that ‘nice Christians’ don’t experience.
Wouldn’t it be exciting if in each capital city at the annual March for the Babies there was 50 to 100,000 people marching for LIFE?

I feel sick when I hear the platitudes from the Libs and Nats, knowing they agreed with the law to permit murder of babies.
