A New Era in Australian Politics?

The Secret Harbour by-election has exposed a major shift in Australian politics, opening new opportunities for minor parties and Christian voices grounded in biblical values.

A Seismic Result

Unless you have been living under a rock, or in a complete media blackout over the past few days, you will have heard about the truly seismic by-election result out of Secret Harbour, Western Australia this past Saturday. This result marks a genuine turning point in Australian politics.

We should always be cautious not to read too much into a single election result. But we should be equally cautious not to underestimate the scale and significance of what has just occurred.

A sleepy suburban seat in the outer suburbs of Perth, one that has voted Labor for virtually its entire history, delivered a resounding defeat to Labor by swinging firmly toward the very opposite end of the political spectrum.

What Happened, and What It Means

Unfortunately, Australian Christians was not the beneficiary of that swing. Our candidate, Bob Burdett, was without question the most biblically grounded candidate on the ballot. However, the people of Secret Harbour ultimately sent their message by getting behind One Nation‘s Luke Herdegen.

So what does this mean for Australian Christians going forward? We believe it signals an era of real opportunity.

This by-election result clearly demonstrated a rejection by voters, particularly working-class voters, of the two major parties. To dismiss this as simply the outcome of a competitive by-election, or ordinary voter frustration, would be a disservice to what we have just witnessed. Something has genuinely shifted.

We Are Ready for This New Political Climate

As voters increasingly move away from the two-party system, they will start looking more closely at minor parties, what they stand for, and what their true priorities are. This is an exciting moment for us, because we believe a growing number of Christian voters in so doing will increasingly place Australian Christians first at the ballot box in the elections to come.

We congratulate the One Nation candidate and the One Nation WA party on their resounding success in this by-election. And we will continue to represent and fight for Christian values and worldview of life, faith, family, and freedom.

Results like this remind us that the political landscape in WA is shifting, and that there is real opportunity for a party grounded in biblical values to grow.
